Two hundred people manage to stop the first eviction by court order, which was scheduled for Thursday, June 18 in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. PAH denounces government measures to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 crisis are insufficient. (Note… PAH is a state wide network of community groups which aids morttgage and rent victims)

The street where Liliana and her two children, aged 7 and 13, live, was already full of people long before one in the afternoon, when the eviction of this family was called, this Thursday, June 18. Finally, they managed to gather more than 200 people, convened by the PAH Barcelona, who managed to paralyze the eviction that was intended to take place.

This is the first eviction that has been stopped since the state of alarm for the coronavirus pandemic in the metropolitan area of Barcelona was declared. The PAH denounces that the government’s measures to alleviate the effects of the COVID-19 crisis are insufficient and alludes to the obvious evidence of the eviction of Liliana and her family.

Liliana paid the rent on time every month to a person who claimed to own the apartment, but when a month ago they cut off her water, she learned that this person was not actually the owner of the apartment and that, for both were occupying the flat for legal purposes.

The Cerberus vulture fund, which is the real owner of the property, began the process of evicting the apartment where this mother and her two children live.

Liliana and PAH Barcelona denounce that the attention given during the pandemic to the tenant has been disastrous and insufficient and that, instead of strengthening the teams, both in Social Services and in Housing, offices have been closed to give telephone attention in many cases negligent, thus leaving tenants to their fate in a complicated context.

Join the #CantPayWontPay Campaign.. day of action today Saturday

June 2020 — London Renters Union

Join renters from across London this Saturday as we come together for our first day of action for our Can’t Pay Won’t Pay campaign.

This is an opportunity to use eye-catching actions to publicise the campaign demands, invite more people to join, and to express solidarity on the streets with your fellow renters.

The focus of actions on this day will be on the way that the current housing system is particularly dangerous to our black and brown communities. Racism has always been a feature of our housing system – our racialised members are impacted both by racist landlords and racist laws, such as the
Right to Rent legislation and no recourse to public funds (NRPF), which make it more difficult to access good quality housing and justice in the housing system.

Why is the London Renters Union taking action this Saturday?

Hundreds of thousands of renters across London are in debt to their landlords, according to research by the Resolution Foundation. Unless the government cancels rent debt and makes the eviction ban permanent, hundreds of thousands of renters face eviction.

Black and brown communities are being disproportionately impacted by the Covid 19 crisis, including by being most at risk of losing jobs and incomes and facing homelessness.    For some migrants, No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) visa conditions prevent them from receiving housing benefit and universal credit, putting them at greater risk of eviction, homelessness, and harassment by landlords.

We have a specific demand around racism in housing: No borders in housing. But racism also interplays with our other campaign demands. For example, a cancellation in all rent debt, would ensure that all renters are protected, including migrants with No Recourse to Public Funds, who are likely to have less access to benefits.

But we won’t give up until all of us get what we need to be safe. Let’s show the government and decision makers that renters are getting organised! How can I join the day of action? Take a photo of yourself holding a sign or placard with a demand which resonates with you!

You could hold a sign about racism in the housing system, NRPF or rent debt and share it using the hashtag #CantPayWontPay.

Make a plan with some friends or family to make banners or put signs up in your local highstreet like the examples here and here.

Share the link to the campaign website: http://cantpaywontpay.uk/ We’ll be creating some energy online on the day too so get ready to share the content we’re putting together!

If there’s one thing that foretold the City of London’s ambition to become the epicenter of finance it was the founding of the Royal Exchange almost 500 years ago.

The driving force behind the capital’s first purpose-built center for trading stocks was Sir Thomas Gresham, whose legacy survives in the college, City street and law of economics that bear his name.

Less celebrated is the role of his prominent backer in the venture, Sir William Garrard: former Lord Mayor and pioneer of English involvement in the slave trade.

Slavery and the brutal birth of the capitalist system

The City of London is interwoven with so many layers of history, from Roman to Medieval, Civil War and the age of empire, that the lives of the myriad figures who contributed to its status today are often obscured by time.

But with outside scrutiny comes the realization that many made their fortunes off the back of slavery and colonial oppression, a fact that is now being acknowledged by some of the financial district’s most venerable names, shaking the foundations upon which many of these institutions were built.

Comrade Malik, A Black Politicized Prisoner: -What does a World without Police Look Like??-

by Keith ‘Malik’ Washington    IWOC, FTP, ABC, UPM and more……

Comrade Malik Speaks:  A Black Politicized Prisoner’s Perspective —

“The black revolution is much more than a struggle for the rights of Negroes.  It is, rather, forcing America to face all its inter-related flaws: racism, poverty, militarism, and materialism.  It is exposing evils that are rooted deeply in the whole structure of our society.  It reveals systematic rather than superficial flaws, and it suggests that RADICAL RECONSTRUCTION OF SOCIETY ITSELF IS THE REAL ISSUE TO BE FACED.”—–Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In three different zones within the city of Atlanta, Georgia the police have decided to refuse to answer calls for help from citizens.  This is the Police’s response and form of protest because they do not agree with the charges lodged against their fraternal brethern who participated in the murder of Rayshard Brooks. https://c0.pubmine.com/sf/0.0.3/html/safeframe.htmlReport this ad https://c0.pubmine.com/sf/0.0.3/html/safeframe.htmlReport this ad

The key phrase that got my attention during the video where Atlanta Police officers executed our brother.  The police officer that shot Rayshard in the back twice said:  “I got’em”.  Both my cell-mate and I agreed that sounded as if the officer had just bagged a wild animal during a hunting expedition.

Comrade Malik!

There was excitement and exhilaration in the tone of the officer’s voice.  I and many other freedom fighters all across the world are demanding that the police be abolished, defunded, and disbanded because this system is not working for us.
I say “Us” meaning all humyn beings who are aware, awoke, and have a conscience.  I want to ask all of you a question:
Don’t you think that there are white folks watching these videos of white police murdering Black men and women???
They are just as tired as we are!!!

The police have lost their mandate from the people.  The police have lost their legitimacy.   When we the people created the police did we give them a LICENSE TO KILL WITH IMPUNITY??

Our protests have now become large and mostly peaceful, yet CNN and Fox News do not get very excited about covering PEACEFUL BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTESTS.  Why is that??  Hello Allison Camarada–can you hear me now?
I hear President Donald J. Trump speaking about the “Good Officers”.  Where were the “Good Officers” when Derek Chauvin had his knee on George Floyd’s neck??

Julian Assange’s U.S. Extradition and Bitcoin’s Battle for Freedom of the Internet

by Nozomi Hayase June 23, 2020 From Bitcoin Magazine. shared with thanks.. illustrations added.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is currently being held on remand in a London maximum-security prison, solely on the basis of a U.S. extradition request. Assange has been charged with 17 counts of espionage related to WikiLeaks’ 2010 to 2011 publications concerning the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, embarrassing U.S. diplomatic communications and evidence of torture in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange Extradition

Assange’s U.S. extradition case is recognized by free speech groups as the most important press freedom case of the 21st century. As the aggressive judicial overreach of this U.S. government is already creating a chilling effect on reporters and media organizations, some recognize consequences far beyond the future of journalism.

Julian Assange’s father, John Shipton, who regularly attends cryptocurrency conferences, has warned those who are involved in the development of new technologies that they are not immune to suffering the same fate as his son.

How does the prosecution of Assange threaten the crypto movement? And why does the Bitcoin community need to be concerned about his plight for freedom?

Innovative Endeavor

At its heart, WikiLeaks is an innovative endeavor. Started as a project of Sunshine Press, it was an invention of a new form of journalism built on the platform of the internet. On its website’s “About” page, WikiLeaks described how it started with an online dialogue between activists around the world, who shared their aspiration to eliminate injustice and human suffering caused by the abuses of power of corporations and governments, especially oppressive regimes.

WikiLeaks also acknowledges the efforts of Philip Zimmerman, the creator of an encryption software program known as Pretty Good Privacy, or PGP, and how the vision of this lone computer programmer in Colorado instigated a global revolution for mass distribution of privacy technologies.

Inspired by this pioneer of private and secure online communication, the founding members of WikiLeaks sought for a way to deploy information technologies to create a robust system of publishing that protects the anonymity of sources and enables transparency of the powerful. This new journalistic organization aimed to make “document leaking technology” available at a global scale in order to better bring accountability to governments and other institutions.

The Crypto Wars

History has shown how new ideas and inventions are often met with opposition and fierce condemnation by the state. At the start of the 1990s, when Zimmermann released PGP, the U.S. government considered what he had done the equivalent of exporting munitions. It launched a three-year criminal investigation against him, creating a battle over encryption that became known to some as “The Crypto Wars.” The case was eventually dropped when U.S. courts ruled that software source code qualifies as speech protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Two decades later, WikiLeaks’ efforts to amplify information technologies to tackle the problem of government secrecy created another global revolution, this time disrupting the media landscape. Like its forerunner, this new free press of the digital age soon became a target of political retaliation.

Julian Assange spoke via internet outside the University Occupation in Barcelona

After WikiLeaks released classified documents that revealed U.S. war crimes, the U.S. government decided that its editor-in-chief had damaged national security, though it produced no shred of evidence that the published documents caused any harm. It effectively declared war on the First Amendment, charging an Australian journalist under the Espionage Act in the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Just as in the first Crypto War, where it tried to ban encryption, it was now trying to shut down WikiLeaks.

Cypherpunk Philosophy

What is this new Crypto War — now being waged against the whistleblowing site — all about? This battle is not just about Assange as an individual. While mainstream media fixates on Assange and his character, WikiLeaks is not driven solely by one charismatic man. Behind the organization, there are thousands of ordinary people worldwide who are dedicated to the principle of freedom of speech.
