A Glimpse into the Elsewhere … Barcelona 19th July 1936

by Enough14 Leave a comment at original post

A glimpse into the elsewhere of an upturning so great that it is unimaginable, where certainties are swept away in an instant and life itself takes on a fragile intensity.

These accounts contain a grain of everything it is possible to foresee of the ultimate fight for freedom and other aspects that could never have been dreamt in our worst nightmares.

They inform, inspire but also warn: we need to recognise the enemies of freedom and self organisation in the paths we tread, blinded by our iconography of the enemy which is also standing right next to us and calls us comrade, albeit hissed through clenched teeth.

With love in our hearts.

Map of Shame: Mass Graves of Fascist-Catholic Regime still not Opened

Map:  All the known mass graves of the hundreds of thousands of victims of the fascist uprising and the Franco regime.

Spain has done little to give closure to the atrocities perpetrated during the dictatorship. Instead, as Alex W. Palmer explains in a recent article, Spain implemented a political agreement known as the “Pact of Forgetting.” 200,000 people were executed in the dictatorship—mostly by the fascist forces, still more died during the bombings of cities and towns in Spain, and some 370,000 were held in concentration camps.

Spain has exhumed the remains of only 9,000 victims of the long fascist-catholic regime in the last 19 years. A report urges the government to formalize an urgent plan to recover up to 25,000 more bodies in the next five years. This will depend on whether a far right coalition wins the April 2019 election.

In Paterna, some of the bones of 100 victims  found in graveyard 112 are cracked, which could mean that the people executed at the site were tortured. According to the AP’s Parra, archaeologists have asked authorities to launch a criminal investigation into the victims’ violent deaths.

Info partly from  Nacho del Río with thanks ……  ”Under the foundations that sustain a kind of modern democracy with serious ups and downs since 1978 a past framed in oblivion has been erected. Continue reading “Map of Shame: Mass Graves of Fascist-Catholic Regime still not Opened”

Durruti and Garcia Oliver Live: in The Echo of Their Footsteps’

It’s not the first time I say it: there are people who only need one book, the Bible to explain the world (…) To me, it happens to me, I must confess it, with ”The Echo of the Steps” the memoirs of Juan García Oliver. An anarchist waiter who arrived at the Minister of Justice in the middle of the war.

from an article by Andreu Barnils on vilaweb

”Durruti and I went to the request of President Lluís Companys. It was surrounded by army officers. When he saw us, opening his arms, he exclaimed: “My children, people of the CNT, today you are the only hope of Catalonia! Forget everything and save the freedoms of our people! “

– Is that all, Companys? I said. I thought you wanted us here to give us weapons.

-I do not have any weapons to give you. I just wanted to wish you lots of luck! ” he replied

(note: The Catalan president Luis Companys later ran out of luck himself and was executed by a fascist terrorist firing squad)

This is one of the hundred of priceless scenes in The Echo of the Steps, one of the books that have influenced my brain more powerfully. They are the memories of a Catalan anarchist.

(note: 100 yrs later García’s great book isn’t translated yet into English, but you can read…   My Revolutionary Life (Anarchist Library):   )

«When the military were beginning their coup d’etat, the CNT Confederal Defense Committee of Barcelona had an advantage of almost a year and a half  studying and planning how to counteract a military revolt. The Confederal Defense Committee existed since the first days of the Republic. The Confederal Defense Panels also (…) Continue reading “Durruti and Garcia Oliver Live: in The Echo of Their Footsteps’”

Anti Fascist ‘Republican Spring’ in Spain: tributes, acts and mobilizations

by  Kaos en La Red      translation by  the Freeonline
The initiatives that took place throughout the State seek to recover the memory of those who built the Republic, of the repressed by the Franco regime and to restore the relevance of the republican message as a rupture with the Bourbon regime inherited from the Franco regime.
The Second Republic is reborn on April 14 across the country through tributes in memory of the reprisals

By Sabela Rodríguez Álvarez

Cities like Madrid, Seville or Zaragoza celebrate demonstrations and events this Saturday to remember the proclamation of the Second Republic 87 years ago
Barcelona begins its Republican Spring, while territories such as Pamplona or Palma de Mallorca extend their activities around the date
Some city councils have already announced that they will hang the tricolor from the municipal buildings, despite the sanctions they may have to assume

This Saturday marks 87 years since the monarchy of Alfonso XIII came to an end to open a new stage. The Second Republic was proclaimed progressively on April 14, 1931 in the squares of the town halls that rushed to hoist the tricolor flag.

The republican project materialized in a period of eight years and that culminated in the end imposed by the uprising of the military and the victory of the national side. The years of dictatorship ended up burying the republican experience, which was then a silent memory. Continue reading “Anti Fascist ‘Republican Spring’ in Spain: tributes, acts and mobilizations”

19. July 1936: A Tribute to the Spanish Revolution

  LIVING THE UTOPIA

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) is one of the most important events of the early 20. century – and so much is ignored and so many lies circulate about it.

The reason is simple. In Spain the different factions of the ruling class have a lot to hide and the survivors are passing away. The existence of a self-organised working class, mainly influenced by anarchism, its courage and lucidity and the role that they played should be hidden at any cost.

Spain’s Musical Thrones: Desperate Move by a Desperate Regime

Anger on the Streets, Panic in the Corridors of Power

The establishment, both inside and outside Spain, is clearly alarmed at the scale and intensity of public anger in the country. In 2013 alone, there were 6,000 demonstrations, 84 of which turned violent according to police figures. What’s more, in the European elections, Spain’s two main establishment parties failed, for the first time in decades, to cobble together 50 percent of the vote.

Living Utopia (The Anarchists & The Spanish Revolution)

A unique feature-length documentary (90 minutes; Spanish with English subtitles) which chronicles the origins and evolution of the Spanish anarchist movement and its important role during the Spanish Revolution (1936-1939)

shut-the-bastards-down1Living Utopia is a unique documentary that blends the historical account of the origins and development of the Spanish anarchist movement, focussing on the 1936 war.

This documentary made in 1997 about the 1936 Spanish Revolution blends historical accounts of the development of the anarchist movement with first-hand testimonies.

A reflection on the philosophical underpinnings of such a movement and their practical application. As both an informative and inspiring piece of research it is considered a jewel amongst historians and rebel hearts.

Millions of peasants and urban workers successfully established a society based on equality, mutual aid, participatory democracy and self-organisation – all without a central state or government.

This fascinating yet largely unknown social experiment was eventually destroyed by forces from inside and outside the country.

Those lyrics at the end struck me to the core (1:33): “And now I’m going to sing to what has never existed, the dove of peace”.

Since the dawn of “civilization”, with few exceptions, we have never been free, and we’ve constantly been at war. We’ve always been enslaved to some tyrant or oligarchs. We must never lose hope my friends, that we can finally be liberated. It’s our duty and our responsibility to struggle, lest the elites leave us without a planet and future for our descendants.

  • Where am I gonna find a group of people who still have the basic skills of survival, in a world where those are not taught in school? A group of people who haven’t been brainwashed into believing in “democracy” where you get a false choice and give away your power to a government who only pretends to serve its people?12M_BCN

  • “The Anarchists were still in virtual control of Catalonia and the revolution was still in full swing. To anyone who had been there since the beginning it probably seemed even in December or January that the revolutionary period was ending; but when one came straight from England the aspect of Barcelona was something startling and overwhelming. It was the first time that I had ever been in a town where the working class was in the saddle.” George Orwell – Homage to Catalonia page 4. From USⒶ

Well, it’s not like it isn’t happening all over the world right now. We have the Zapatistas who are nearing the 20th anniversary of their struggle, the Recuperdad in Argentina, Greek Anarchists, anti-austerity protests in Spain, Common Ground Collective and Occupy Sandy in the U.S., Christiania in Denmark. There’s already a lot happening. Add to it. Nurture it. Make it grow and talk to others. Get them to think. Have you seen scot crow’s interview on RT?

  • Now if only that woman’s sadly incorrect assumption it had happened all over the world had been true, then we’d not be in the global shitstorm we’re in now8-6-06_greece_anarchists_students__001_
