Interview with Newroz Ehmed, new Commander-in-Chief of the YPJ
7/20/2020 |
The new Commander-in-Chief of the Yekîneyên Parastinê yên Jinê (Women’s Defense Units, YPJ), Newroz Ehme, highlights mainly from how the Rojava Revolution has clearly shown the power of the community and women.

Under what conditions did the revolution take place and what stages did it go through?
For 2010-2011 a revolutionary process began. People reacted to the crisis in the system, which they could no longer tolerate. In particular, we witnessed the revolts of the Arab people in the process known as the Arab Spring. The peoples no longer tolerated the obvious persecution they suffered. The protests unfolded in waves. The Kurdish people were also one of the peoples who experienced this persecution and attacks, as it had suffered genocide in all respects.

Thus, the Kurdish people joined this wave of uprising. The Kurdish people wanted to fight for their freedom. The situation was a challenge. The only strength the people had was that it was organized and adapted to the revolution with a sense of freedom. Women in particular filled the squares. The 21st century is the century of women and this was clearly seen.
What makes ours different from other revolutions is the desire to fight for self-determination and freedom, awareness, development and the struggle to ensure the participation of all peoples. We create this popular revolution with our own means. There were forces that wanted to intervene in it, but they were not allowed to do so.
Here the Arab, Circassian, Assyrian, Syrian, Armenian and Kurdish peoples lived together for years, this place is a mosaic of different peoples, so these peoples were united by the desire to live together in brotherhood.
The fragmentation pursued and implemented by the Syrian system to divide peoples was eliminated with this revolution. The Rojava revolution developed under the leadership of women, and this is how it is seen by the world … How do you evaluate this idea of a ” revolution within revolution “?

Since the Rojava revolution is a women-led revolution, it is also called the women’s revolution. Because it is a revolutionary fact for women to take the lead in all fields. With love for freedom, step by step, we faced all difficulties, we resisted, we stood tall to break the chains of slavery, which were assumed for thousands of years, and to win freedom.
This level of awareness increased with each step taken over time. The participation of the YPJ influenced the whole society. The women showed that they were able to stand firm in all areas. For this reason, not only has the state system been destroyed with this revolution, but the characteristic of being a revolution within the revolution showing the strength of women became evident. Women are involved in the political, social, diplomatic, economic and military fields, and everyone can see this clearly.
Women are in all walks of life with their views and ideas and in this way we come to the democratic, ecological and free life based on women.
When the Turkish occupation of Serêkaniyê and Girê Spi took place , the peoples of the world showed strong opposition to it. What is your comment on this?

Revolutionary women fought everywhere and faced various attacks. In 2014, YPJ forces set out to deal with attacks by IS (Islamic State) mercenaries in Shengal (Iraqi Kurdistan) and fought against these attacks to the end. Of course, the world also witnessed this. It was a struggle for all of humanity, everyone saw it. The brave resistance of the women encouraged everyone. As the invading Turkish army could not accept this revolution and the resistance of the women, it launched an invasion attack without justification.
However, the unity of the peoples, their joint resistance meant that they established their own army without any support from any state. Comrade Hevrin Xelef, Aqîde Anna and Comrade Amara, as well as many commanders and internationalists joined this revolution from all over the world.
This resistance was made possible by the people sacrificing everything for freedom. Although the Turkish army has occupied some of our areas, it has not been able to occupy the will of women and peoples and their power of resistance: this is the greatest response to the occupation.
Today, the lands of Rojava are being attacked by the Turkish state. What is being done against this and at what level are the defense preparations?

Of course, we have made a lot of progress in this revolution. It is clear that the women of the defense forces will not give up the successes achieved with their people. … Turkey continues to threaten and attack Rojava, southern and northern Kurdistan. We, the Women’s Defense Units, act conscientiously. Our people must act with this awareness.
We are preparing in many ways. Our people have experienced a lot of pain in these past processes. Despite these difficulties, the suffering and the price they had to pay, our people did not take a step back, they have always been by our side. They were always with us in a spiritual and material way.
Our call is to protect the dignity and resilience of our people. We appreciate the efforts of our martyrs and veterans, and show our respects to the families of the martyrs.

We promise to fight to the end for a free, egalitarian and democratic society.

I was very impressed by his determination and will. In addition, the revolution and the war in Rojava me they attracted me to the ranks of freedom. In the guerrillas I was impressed by the camaraderie and construction together in all walks of life. “
Amara was one of those who took refuge in song and poetry. While most of us couldn’t find words to talk about martyrdom, we used to sing songs of the martyrs. She would gather everyone around him singing whenever he had the chance to do so.
