After 288 days of hunger strike, the singer Helen Polik who is a member of the

music band Yorum Grup, lost her life. She went on hunger strike to protest against the Turkish authorities’ arrest of members of her group and demanded their release from prison, in addition to allowing them to continue the music, but the Justice and Development Government rejected her demands, which made her continue the strike until she lost her life on Friday in Turkey’s prisons.

Shamefully the long fight by the Yorum group for the right to sing, for their music and physical survival, has been largely ignored by European social movements. Their extermination is part of Erdogan’s bloody war against women, gays, anarchists, Kurds and anyone who speaks out for freedom or democracy.

Turkish Islamist President R.T. Erdogan mobilized thousands of agents who have occupied the town of Armutlu where Kurdish singer Helin Bölek was buried. Regime police dropped fired water cannons and tear gas at the mourners even inside the cemetery.

In Istanbul, the rally in memory of the musician has been aborted by Erdogan police who have arrested the civilians involved. The number of people detained is unknown.

The number of people infected with the coronavirus across the world has now topped 1 million, with almost a quarter of those testing positive for COVID-19 residing within the United States. The White House is now predicting upwards of 200,000 people will die from the virus in the US, a number which Trump recently praised as low, stating that he has done a “very good job” at containing the outbreak, despite all evidence to the contrary.

The fallout from the pandemic has had a massive economic impact. CNN reports an increase of unemployment claims by a catastrophic 3,000%, raising the unemployment rate to around 10% – and many expect it to raise to upwards of 30% or higher. In response, many banks and State institutions have pushed to issue protections to those paying mortgages and cancel foreclosures, however renters are left scrambling to make rent.

With the threat of homelessness looming in many people’s minds throughout March as the crisis moved from back page news story to global pandemic, calls for a rent strike grew from viral memes into a real world movement. Despite attacks in the corporate press, on April 1st, the rent strike officially kicked off across the US and Canada, as entire buildings and apartment complexes announced their refusal to pay and support grew within the wider population for a rent freeze.

By the evening of April 1st, CNN was even running an entire segment on the strike, showcasing the degree in which the campaign has exploded into the popular imagination of millions of people. This in itself is a testament to the hard work of grassroots organizers, the massive proliferation of flyers, posters, graffiti messages, and the now iconic white sheets which have come to symbolize the rent strike, and the countless hours spent between neighbors in meetings and online discussions.

Israeli forces on Thursday entered a Palestinian village in the northern Jordan Valley to confiscate materials designated to build a clinic to deal with the novel coronavirus outbreak. 

Officials from the Israeli Civil Administration came to the village of Khirbet Ibziq with a military escort, bulldozer and two trucks equipped with cranes on Thursday morning to demolish community clinic and emergency housing, according to Israeli human rights monitor Btselem.

The group reported that Israeli officials seized poles and sheeting designated to form eight tents, two for a field clinic, two for a mosque, and four for emergency housing for people evacuated from their homes. 

A power generator, as well as supplies of sand, cement and cinder blocks to be used for the floor of the tents, were also confiscated. Btselem said the villagers were building a first-aid community initiative to deal with the Covid-19 crisis which has paralyzed large parts of the southern West Bank. 

There are 91 confirmed cases so far in the Palestinian territories, with one death reported on Wednesday. 

The Jordan Valley covers an area of about 1.6 million dunams (1,600 km2) and constitutes around 30 percent of the total occupied West Bank. According to a previous government report, the Valley includes about 280,000 dunams of arable land, 50,000 of which are still used by Palestinians and 27,000 by illegal Jewish settlers. 

The majority of the Jordan Valley is under full Israeli military control, despite being within the West Bank. Meanwhile, at least 44 percent of the total land in the Jordan Valley has been reappropriated by Israeli forces for military purposes and training exercises.

Just one week after Julian Assange’s request for bail in recognition of the threat posed to his life by COVID-19 was denied, the spread of the coronavirus through the prison system is escalating alarmingly.

The WikiLeaks founder, held in Belmarsh prison facing extradition to the US for exposing war crimes, has a chronic lung condition and has had his health destroyed by a decade of mistreatment by the British state, amounting to psychological torture.
Already on Monday, 55 inmates were reported infected across 21 different prisons in the UK, plus 18 prison staff and four escort staff. The number of prisoners testing positive was double the total just three days before. By Tuesday, the number had risen again to 65, across 23 prisons. According to the Mirror, around 6,000 prison and probation staff are currently in self-isolation—12 percent of the workforce.

Two prisoners have already been killed by the virus, the first on March 22 and the second on March 26.
The direction of travel is indicated by Rikers Jail in New York city. On March 31 there were 180 reported cases in the prison out of a population of 4,604, meaning an infection rate eight times higher than the already severely affected city itself.

In the UK, the barbaric response of the authorities has been to “cohort” prisoners who display coronavirus-type symptoms, like a fever or cough, with confirmed cases of COVID-19.
