You don’t often see historians presenting their work via illustration. But thinking about it, why not? What better way to bring the past to vivid life?
That’s exactly the approach taken by Dr Rebecca Hall, a historian who’s seeking to uncover the hidden legacies of transatlantic slavery via graphic novel.
Her new book, WAKE, is a collaboration with artist Hugo Martinez and explores the under-researched history of women-led slave revolts in the Americas.
The book explores both the revolts that took place on slave ships during the so-called ‘Middle Passage’ stage of the Triangular Trade and uprisings that happened in colonial New York, pieced together from historical evidence ranging from slave ship logs to forensic matter taken from enslaved African burial grounds in the city.

There are some things that I objectively am — traits that I was born with or into and that, regardless of my life circumstances, will never change. I am white. I am female. I am a sister. There are other things that I objectively am currently, but that maybe weren’t always true, like being vegan or a registered Independent voter.
And then there are the things I believe, the labels that I adopted over time as my perspectives on politics, religion, and ideologies have shifted. I was raised Christian, but today I am more of an agnostic atheist. I used to call myself a socialist, then a communist, and then an anarcho-communist.
Two days before the national elections were held in Mexico on June 4, a group of normalistas (students who attend rural teachers’ colleges) set fire to a National Electoral Institute (INE, Instituto Nacional Electoral) building in Tuxtla-Gutierrez, Chiapas in demand for the freedom of 17 imprisoned normalistas. The 17 normalistas were arrested last month after seizing buses and occupying a highway on May 18 as part of protests against online exams.
Following the arrests last month, normalistas and activists targeted a state official building, promising to prevent the national elections in the state of Chiapas if the students weren’t released.

In the most recent action, the INE building was set ablaze with an incendiary device which caused damage to furniture and computers. The slogan, “Free the normalistas” was spray painted on the wall of the building.
The normalistas had originally rallied on May 18 to demand that admission exams be taken in person, as many do not have internet access in rural areas. At this protest, 74 women and 19 men were arrested; of the 93 arrested 17 remain in prison. Two indigenous protesters were disappeared after the protest.
The burning of the INE is the most recent combative action demanding the freedom of the students; previous actions involved blocking highways and targeting official government buildings. The normalistas have made it clear that their demands will not be satisfied through the ballot box, and that their resistance will continue to grow.

Only 25,000 people have attended the Columbus demonstration against pardons held this Sunday in Madrid, according to data from the National Police provided by the Government Delegation.
However the organisers claimed access to the square was closed at 12 noon because it was full. Last year crowd estimates were as high as 200.000 by the organisers.
This would mean that half of the people who did attend the rally that took place at this same point two years ago, which according to the Government Delegation, were attended by 45,000 people.

The data of the National Police contrast with those of the Municipal Police of Madrid, which numbers 126,000 participants. It is also far from the figure that the organizers contributed two years ago, who assured that 200,000 people were gathered in Colón.
