From doomsday scenarios to conspiracies totally removed from reality, a Twitter analysis found the top fear-based narratives that today’s climate deniers are spreading to prevent climate justice.

When fossil fuel companies found out about the link between their product and climate change decades ago, they did everything they could to hide it. They lied, manipulated, and deceived. 

Today, denying the reality of climate change isn’t as easy, and it is certainly more controversial. But that doesn’t mean climate deniers — fossil fuel companies, lobbyists, and their allies opposed to climate action — have moved past the lies. 

As catastrophic fires spread across the world and large swathes of land are flooded by extreme weather events or threatened by sea-level rise, outright denial is no longer the most effective strategy, or these days, the most common.

To better understand today’s type of climate science denial we analyzed over 300,000 tweets from the past five years. Our social media analysis found that climate deniers have been promoting at least four major narratives based on drumming up fears of government control in order to prevent effective climate policies, particularly in the United States. 

Our research found that climate denial has evolved into a softer, more insidious type of misinformation, one that focuses on denying urgency and action, one that targets the solutions more than anything else. Key elements of this strategy include promoting confusion, doomist perspectives, conspiracy theories, and fabricating lies to convince the public that there is no real need for climate change policy, certainly not at the scale of what scientists say is needed to avoid catastrophic impacts — basically, supporting any effort to postpone or halt ambitious climate action and protect business as usual.

According to John Cook, research fellow at Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub in Australia, climate misinformation used to be more focused on undermining the science, but over time, the strategies have been moving more towards attacking solutions and creating fear, as well as leaning towards “cultural-war” type misinformation.

In November 2020 a series of co-ordinated raids against the website 325.nostate.net were executed by counter-terrorism cops in UK as part of “Operation Adream.” As explained below, several properties in the South-West of England were searched and one person, Toby Shone, was arrested and charged under the Terrorist Act.

Toby was out on bail from November 2020 to February 2021, when he was re-arrested and remanded to HMP Wandsworth in London, thereafter to HMP Bristol where he is held prisoner at present. Toby’s integrity and commitment to the struggle should be an inspiration to all of us; as his words alone make clear he has demonstrated intense courage in the face of ovewhelming repression. My name is Toby Shone, and I’m an imprisoned anarchist held in Bristol prison who was kidnapped at gunpoint by the anti-terrorist unit, as part of Operation Adream in the UK. The repression was aimed to target the anarchist group of critique and practice, 325 collective and the website 325.nostate.net.

“Official figures show that one in 40 people in Scotland were estimated to have had Covid in the past week, with around 80 percent of new cases identified as the Omicron variant, according to Nicola Sturgeon.“ .. That’s 136,650 of the 5.46m Scottish population.

Even so PSYCHOSIS REIGNS, with a huge panic fueled by government warnings, media fear-mongering and social pressure. Lack of PCR tests. Not enough boosters. Rapid transmission…“the Scottish Government however continue to warn…….”

By now we are trapped in Covid Psychosis, doing ourselves, our families, our kids far more harm than by treating Omicron as just a bad flu.

And the authorities are trapped into their self serving “narrative” of restrictions, masks, lockdowns, vaccines, mass testing health passports……….

Yesterday (December 30, 2021) , in Sudan, during nationwide demonstrations against the military dictatorship that seized power on October 25, state forces repeatedly used live rounds against protesters, killing at least four people and wounding many more. Security forces have killed scores of demonstrators since the coup of October 25.

Nevertheless, a powerful movement based in local resistance committees and courageous street demonstrations continues to resist the consolidation of power under the military.

We present the following interview with anarchist participants in the demonstrations in hopes of helping people outside Sudan to understand the situation.

In December 2018, massive countrywide protests broke out against dictator Omar Al-Bashir, who had ruled Sudan for some three decades. Al-Bashir fled in April 2019; yet riots, blockades, and sit-in protests continued against the Transitional Military Council that seized control of the government, and a massive protest occupation held territory in Al-Qyada Square at the heart of the capital city of Khartoum.

Militarized forces associated with the Council stepped up their attacks on protesters, culminating on June 3, 2019 when they brutally evicted the sit-ins. They committed a particularly brutal massacre when they attacked the occupation in Al-Qyada Square.

In response, a general strike gripped much of Sudan from June 9 to 11. Yet some representatives of the movement consequently entered negotiations with the regime, establishing a power-sharing agreement in which a provisional government composed of military and civilian representatives was to manage the transition to a new administration. This came to an end with the military coup of October 25.
