Kurdish feminist guerrilla YJA-Star statement for 25N: ‘YJA Star is an army that defends all oppressed women’

The YJA Star guerrillas (Yekîneyên Jinên Azad ên Star or Free Women’s Units-Ishtar) drew attention to violence against women in the patriarchal system on the occasion of November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Highlighting that millions of women are subjected to massacres, rape, harassment and violence in the patriarchal system every day, the YJA Star guerrillas stated that this brutality against women is part of life and is intended to be legitimized.

Stating that they have taken a pioneering role in all aspects of life and war, the women guerrillas stressed that systematic violence can only end through the joint organization and self-defense of women.

The guerrilla said that in many parts of the world, policies of femicide are being carried out against women, and that these policies can be overcome with resistance and solidarity.

The YJA Star guerrillas emphasized that they fight not only for the women of Kurdistan, but also for all oppressed and violent women, giving the following message on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25:

“YJA Star is an army that defends all oppressed women, the women of Kurdistan and Turkey first and foremost, as well as Afghanistan, India and Europe. We will defeat the invaders with the motto ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ (Woman, Life, Freedom).

We follow the path of selfless comrades like Asya, Rûken and Sar, who sacrificed their lives for freedom without a moment’s hesitation. As YJA Star fighters, we will strike a blow to the male-dominated system in every action we take.

We call on all young women to join the ranks of YJA Star, to join the life beautified by the Apoist philosophy (referring to Apo, Abdullah Öçalan) and to crown the struggle with success”.

YJA Star is the female armed militia of the Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan (Kurdistan Workers’ Party, PKK): Sozdar Avesta, member of the Presidential Council (made up of 6 people*) of the Koma Civakên Kurdistan (KCK) which includes, among others, the PKK and the YJA itself, has expressed a similar sentiment:

“Women must strengthen their self-defense and be more aware and organized.” Avesta, whose real name is Nuriye Kesbir (1948), joined the PKK in 1973 and has focused on defending the Kurdish Yezidi minority.

*Currently Avesta herself, Cemal Bayık (1951, one of the founders of the PKK in 1978, head of the ARGK until 1995), Murat Karyılan (1948, one of the founders of the PKK, since 2014 heads the HPG), Mustafa Karasu (1950, Alevi imprisoned in 1980 and former head of the ERNK), Bese Hozat (1978, Alevi, descendant of victims of the repression in Dersim of 1938, co-chair of the KCK organization that she leads since 2013 with Cemal Bayık) and Elif Pazarcik (active in the armed resistance since 1991, in the leadership since 2013)

Les guerrillers de les  YJA Star (Yekîneyên Jinên Azad ên Star o Unitats de Dones Lliures-Ishtar) van cridar l’atenció sobre la violència contra les dones en el sistema patriarcal amb motiu del 25 de novembre, Dia Internacional per a l’Eliminació de la Violència contra les Dones. Destacant que milions de dones són sotmeses diàriament a massacres, violacions, assetjament i violència en el sistema patriarcal, les guerrilles de YJA Star van afirmar que aquesta brutalitat contra les dones forma part de la vida i es vol legitimar.

Afirmant que han assumit un paper pioner en tots els aspectes de la vida i la guerra, les dones guerrilleres van subratllar que la violència sistemàtica només pot acabar mitjançant l’organització conjunta i l’autodefensa de les dones.

La guerrilla va dir que a moltes parts del món s’estan duent a terme polítiques de feminicidis contra les dones, i que aquestes polítiques es poden superar amb la resistència i la solidaritat.

Les guerrilles de YJA Star van subratllar que lluiten no només per les dones del Kurdistan, sinó també per totes les dones oprimides i sotmeses a la violència, donant el següent missatge en el Dia Internacional per a l’Eliminació de la Violència contra les Dones el 25 de novembre: “YJA Star és un exèrcit que defensa totes les dones oprimides, les dones del Kurdistan i Turquia en primer lloc, així com l’Afganistan, l’Índia i Europa.

Derrotarem els invasors amb el lema ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ (Dona, Vida, Llibertat). Seguim el camí de companyes desinteressades com Asya, Rûken i Sar, que van sacrificar les seves vides per la llibertat sense dubtar un moment. Com a lluitadors de YJA Star, donarem un cop al sistema dominat per homes en cada acció nostra. Fem una crida a totes les dones joves a participar a les files de YJA Star, a unir-se a la vida embellida per la filosofia apoista (referent a Apo, Abdullah Öçalan) i a coronar la lluita amb èxit”.

YJA Star és la milícia armada femenina del Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan (Partit dels Treballadors del Kurdistan, PKK): En un sentit similar s’ha expressat Sozdar Avesta, membre del Consell Presidencial (format per 6 persones*) de la Koma Civakên Kurdistan (Confederació de Comunitats del Kurdistan, KCK) que integra, entre d’altres, el PKK i la pròpia YJA: “Les dones han d’enfortir la seva autodefensa i ser més conscients i organitzades”. Avesta, de nom real Nuriye Kesbir (1948), va incorporar-se al PKK el 1973 i s’ha centrat en la defensa de la minoria kurda yezidi.

*Actualment la pròpia Avesta, Cemal Bayık (1951, un dels fundadors del PKK el 1978, cap de l’ARGK fins 1995), Murat Karyılan (1948, un dels fundadors del PKK, des de 2014 dirigeix les HPG), Mustafa Karasu (1950, alevi empresonat el 1980 i ex cap de l’ERNK), Bese Hozat (1978, alevi, descendent de víctimes de la repressió a Dersim de 1938, co presidenta de la KCK organització que lidera des de 2013 amb Cemal Bayık) i Elif Pazarcik (activa en la resistència armada des de 1991, a la direcció des de 2013)
