Fri 7/11 Event with the persecuted comrades of the Koukaki squatter community

Παρ 7/11 Εκδήλωση με τα διωκόμενα συντρόφια της κοινότητας καταλήψεων Κουκακίου 1 Νοεμβρίου, 2025antiviosi0

November 1, 2025 antiviosi solidarity,

Friday 7/11 at 7 p.m. there will be an event at the Antibiotics squat with persecuted comrades from the Koukaki squatting community in view of the court of appeal for the evacuation of the reoccupation of 45 Matrozou which is set for Tuesday 2/12.

A solidarity bar for the legal costs of the persecuted pets will follow

The Koukaki squatter community consisted of the squats of three neighbouring buildings in Koukaki, 45 Matrozou, 21 Paneitoliou and 3 Arvali. The buildings, which were occupied over a period of 9 months in 2017, constituted a diverse and vibrant community of struggle in the centre of Athens.

From the beginning until the events of the repeated evictions, they were an example of how political, housing and social needs can be met collectively and radically in the context of self-organization and self-management, even in alienated urban metropolises. The community functioned in a complementary and mutually reinforcing way, creating a network of solidarity and collective life.

Its tangible presence through its social character extended this network to the neighbourhood level, which was strongly felt through the creation of an open neighbourhood assembly and the response of residents at the time of the evacuations.

The community intervened in issues concerning the area, such as gentrification, and fought against its assimilation, privatisation and touristicisation. At the same time, it was also involved in migration, detention centres and struggles in the wider a/a area.

The first evacuation of 45 Matrozou took place on 12 March 2018 in a coordinated state operation, during which two more squats in Exarchia (11 Zaimi and Gare in Kallidromiou) were evacuated. The comrades from Matrozou were beaten and 12 arrests on felony charges.

This development did not deter the comrades who, a fortnight later, took over the building. Finally, within the ultimatum of Chrysochoidis, according to which all the squats were to self-evacuate within December 2019, on the 18th of that month all three squats were evacuated by the cops. The highlight of the repression frenzy was the close-range shooting of a comrade with a plastic bullet in the chest.

Both the cops and the director of the surgical clinic at the Elpis hospital tried to cover up the event. After the militant defense of Matrozhu, the cops entered an empty building as the comrades managed to escape. The fury of the state goons erupted in the neighboring house, where they broke in and beat up a family: a father and two sons. The orgy of repression and propaganda also reached the mainstream media, with whatever readings their paid analysts came up with.

The comrades of Matrozhou and Panitolio once again recaptured their home on 11 January 2020. The evacuation operation takes place on the same day. The cops involved in the evacuation of Matrozou literally eat the whole house on their heads.

After many postponements, the first court took place on 31 May 2024 for the occupations of Panitoli and Arvali. From the acquittal verdicts for the Arvali and Panitoli evacuation and the sentences so far – 12 months in first instance for the first Panitoli evacuation (2019), 4-18 months final for the first Matrozou evacuation (2018) – we reach the court for the third Matrozou evacuation.

More precisely, on 29/10/2024, the court of first instance of the reoccupation of Matrozou 45 (2020) was completed. The comrades were sentenced to 6.5 years of imprisonment, a suspended sentence, which is suspended until the court of appeal, which is set for 02/12/2025. The then juvenile comrade, who was tried in the Court of Appeal where juvenile cases are heard, was found guilty of all charges with a penalty of a reprimand.

Also pending is the court for the solidarity comrades arrested outside the Matrozhou building on the day of the evacuation, for which no date has been set, as well as the court of appeal for the evacuation of 21 Panitoliou (2019), which has been postponed to 30/03/2026.

The unprecedented threat of imprisonment of squatters is becoming increasingly visible and is a show of force by the state, which attempts to impose fear on anyone acting outside the suffocating confines of legality.

By stepping on a possible imprisonment it tries to inactivate social segments that resist.

The outcome of the first trial with the exhausting sentence adds to the judicial hostage-taking of many comrades, the imprisonment with flimsy charges (e.g. the “comrades” case, the case of Ampelokipoi, the case of A. Florou/Compañeros Revenge Partnership, the case of G.K. from the case of the seven in Patras), the kidnappings of comrades, the invasions of the houses of militants, the preventive arrests and the increasingly aggravating restrictive measures.

We believe that such an outcome will leave a corresponding legacy, opening the way to prison for squatters who militantly defend their homes, their spaces of struggle and their existence on the street. A possibility that is fully aligned with the new penal code, which effectively proposes jail even for misdemeanor sentences that were previously given suspended sentences.

The enactment of the new penal code combined with the new prison code is another weapon in the state’s quiver that expands the prison population, lengthens prison time and worsens prison conditions. The fact that it has not yet been fully implemented in cases involving political trials of the anarchist space proves that even if the state dreams of prisons for those who resist, at the same time it takes the anarchist space into account by weighing the social reactions.

For our part, acting against the central doctrine of Law and Order of neoliberal management, the collective and militant defence of squats are our primary objectives. We understand squats as centres of struggle and attack against the existing system. A multimodal struggle against any power with interdisciplinary and inclusive analyses, fueled by our anger and solidarity.

Every occupation is a means of resistance embodying a crack in the imposed normality. The normality of repression, precision, femicide, 13-hour work, state crimes, heteronormativity and many others.

Being in the present day, we observe the ever-increasing assault on occupied spaces and every form of resistance, with evacuations of squats, attacks on marches, bullying by cops, increasing surveillance with cameras and drones, tightening of the penal code and the (pre-)imprisonment of militants being daily news.

Within the occupied spaces, we build new social bonds and alternative forms of living together. In the dystopia we live in, squats are a counter-proposal. In fact, beyond being centres of struggle, they are centres of existence. Through collective fermentation and co-construction we seek the total deconstruction of dominant narratives and active resistance and rupture with them.

The legacy left by the Koukaki Squatter Community is about its self-consistency both in political projects and solidarity relations, and in the multiform militant struggle. This legacy is an important chapter in the history of the struggles of the a/a space.

From the proclamations in the first text of Matrozhou about collective self-defence and militant defence, to the final battle, the comrades demonstrated consistency of words and deeds.

They responded to the repeated repression with stubbornness and anger by taking back their homes and continuing their action.

In the midst of all this, we struggle to keep alive the cells of resistance that constitute the squats in every city and neighborhood and stand in solidarity with those who are faced with the vengeful fury of power and continue to resist with stubbornness and consistency.
