Victory for Dan and Solidarity Federation

Solidarity Federation has recently been leading a campaign in support of Dan, a former temporary worker employed by the Office Angels recruitment agency over unpaid wages. The past week has seen a national week of action against the agency.

On Wednesday Office Angels were forced to issue a public statement claiming they “did not receive approved timesheets” from Dan.

Yesterday this statement was changed to claim that “new information has recently come to light and we have taken this individual at his word and paid all monies outstanding”.

A new law gives Monsanto and others freedom to act in Chile and restricts the right to reuse seeds.

Con 13 votos a favor (de la derecha y uno de la Concertación), 5 en contra y 6 abstenciones, el Senado de Chile aprobó el 11 de mayo el Convenio Upov 91 que impedirá a los campesinos guardar la semilla y extenderá el tiempo de vigencia de los derechos y garantías de las transnacionales que vendan semillas híbridas y transgénicas en el país.

UPOV Y LOBBY EMPRESARIAL

La Unión Internacional para la Protección de las Obtenciones Vegetales, Upov, es una organización propiciada por las transnacionales comercializadoras de semillas y respaldada por los gobiernos, de la que Chile es parte. En los primeros años producían híbridos y hoy también transgénicos. Entre ellas están las empresas Monsanto –que controla más del 90% del mercado de la semilla transgénica- Syngenta, Bayer, y Dupont/Pioneer. Las ventas de semillas y plaguicidas les reportan enormes ganancias a costa de la destrucción de la agricultura campesina, remplazada por la agroindustria y los monocultivos de semillas transgénicas. El precio de los alimentos, según FAO, se encuentra actualmente en los niveles más altos de la historia.

El Convenio Internacional para la Protección de las Obtenciones Vegetales (Convenio Upov) ha sido modificado en tres oportunidades: 1972, 1978 y 1991. En Chile el exitoso lobby empresarial para que Chile, firmante de Upov 78, adhiriese a Upov 91 fue encabezado por Monsanto a través de ChileBio con el apoyo de Anpros (la asociación gremial de productores de semilla transgénica de exportación) y del Diario Financiero, virtual vocero del negocio de exportación de semilla transgénica. El Gobierno y senado chileno finalmente se rindieron a la presión adicional del Presidente Obama, cercano a Monsanto, quien traía en su agenda de visita a Chile, el tema del respeto a la propiedad intelectual………

Study Shows Monsanto Roundup Herbicide Link to Birth Defects

Research carried out by a multinational scientific team headed by Professor Andrés Carrasco, head of the Laboratory of Molecular Embryology at the University of Buenos Aires Medical School and member of Argentina’s National Council of Scientific and Technical Research, presents alarming demonstration that Monsanto and the GMO agribusiness industry have systematically lied about the safety of their Roundup. Roundup in far lower concentrations than used in agriculture is linked to birth defects. The health implications are huge. All major GMO crops on the market today are genetically manipulated to “tolerate” the herbicide Roundup………

Alarming results
Now a new international scientific team headed by Prof. Andres Carrasco and including researchers from the UK, Brazil, USA, and Argentina have demonstrated that Glyphosate, the main active ingredient in Roundup causes malformations in frog and chicken embryos at doses far lower than those used in agricultural spraying and well below maximum residue levels in products presently approved in the European Union.[1] The Carrasco group was led to research the embryonic effects of glyphosate by reports of high rates of birth defects in rural areas of Argentina where Monsanto’s genetically modified “Roundup Ready” (RR) soybeans are grown in large monocultures sprayed from airplanes regularly. RR soy is engineered to tolerate Roundup, allowing farmers to spray the herbicide liberally to kill weeds while the crop is growing.

Carrasco presented his group’s findings at a press conference during the 6th European Conference of GMO Free Regions in the European Parliament in Brussels. He stated, “The findings in the lab are compatible with malformations observed in humans exposed to glyphosate during pregnancy.”

Widespread reports of human malformations began to be reported in Argentina beginning 2002, two years after widespread aerial spraying of Roundup and planting of RR Soybeans was begu……

La petrolera estadounidense ConocoPhillips se retiró de proyecto que junto a Repsol-YPF pretendía explotar el crudo del Bloque 39, adyacente al Bloque 67. Según informó Amazon Watch, estos trabajos extractivos desplazarían a indígenas en aislamiento voluntario ubicados en la selva norte del país.

Para Amazon Watch, las operaciones petroleras en las regiones donde habitan los indígenas en aislamiento representan una gran amenaza a su sobrevivencia, debido a la posible propagación de enfermedades foráneas y al desplazamiento forzado.

Ambos bloques petroleros están ubicados en la frontera con Perú y Ecuador, entre los ríos Napo y Tigre, y limitan con una reserva para personas indígenas aisladas, ubicada al otro lado de la frontera en Ecuador.

Destroying the Arctic for a three-year fix

How much oil lies under that Arctic ice? 90 billion barrels, according to the US Geological Survey.

But, how much really is that? If you ask an oil company, that’s a huge amount. With a barrel of oil over the hundred dollar mark, that’s nine trillion dollars worth at today’s prices – if you could get at it all.

However, there’s a much more important number than the mind-boggling figures that the oil companies deal in.

That’s the number of years the Arctic oil could keep our addiction going for.

Three years.

It’s astonishing. All the flag planting, dragging of icebergs and gambling with risky drilling, is all to dig up a dead fuel that will only keep us going for three years (global consumption is approx. 80 million barrels / day).

Lobbying and paid experts are the tip of the iceberg. They’re the obvious villains but denial only takes hold because, fundamentally, it is something we want to believe……

At this point, those looking for another excuse to sneer self-righteously at the climate denial movement might get a wake up call of their own. Washington and Cook are adamant that we are all implicated. ‘We are compelled to conclude that we the people also have something to answer for. We as a society let denial prosper…

When they return from another round of failed talks, we don’t protest. We quietly prefer them to pretend. After all, if they actually paid attention to our petitions, they might take away our cars, holidays, and cheap imports.
