JERUSALEM, AUG 5 (from EFE with thanks) . — The number of Palestinians in Israeli prisons who have gone on hunger strike in recent weeks has exceeded 500, the president of the Palestinian Prisoners Club, Qadura Fares, told EFE on Friday.
According to Fares, about a hundred have stopped eating in solidarity with prisoner Bilal Kayed, who has been fasting for 52 days over his detention without trial, while more than 400 others have also been on hunger strike to protest at prison conditions and abuses they have suffered.
The prisoner who initiated this wave of strikes is Bilal Kayed, who was supposed to be released last June after serving a 14year sentence, but on the day of his release he was placed under administrative detention.
“His situation is very dangerous. He is in the Hospital Barzalei in Ashkelon in southern Israel and, according to Israeli physicians he could die at any time. He was allowed only to see his lawyer, but not his family,” said Fares.
According to the Palestinian NGO, Israel has imprisoned 7,000 Palestinians, of whom more than 700 are under administrative detention.
