The viral feminist anthem “The rapist is you” (“Un violador en tu camino”) born in the ongoing Chilean Uprising it is still making waves all over the world.

It has inspired women to protest sexual harassment, abuse and violent repression, ‘with complicit connivance all the way up to “the Police, the judges, the State and the President”.
Some of the demonstrations are in Bangladesh, where over a thousand people protested came out against the rape of a Dhaka University student. Many protesters performed the Bangla version of the song “The rapist is you”.

Along with the Chilean revolution, the feminist choreography continues to cause a stir throughout the world, as it inspires women to resist.
This online TV channel did a music video with the Bangla song playing over performances in different countries. Clips of the performances were not broadcast in Bangladeshi mainstream media, but went viral on social media.
The protest happened on January 6 in front of the Bangladesh National Museum adjacent to the campus.
Around 500 cases of rape and abuse had been filed in the Dhaka metropolitan area in 2019.
This online television channel made a music video in which he used the Bangladeshi song as background music over and over again in interrogations from different countries. The videos of the interpretations were not transmitted in the popular media, but they became viral in the social media.

From Chile to the world
“The rapist is you” became a feminist anthem f after Chilean women danced and sang the choreography created by the feminist collective Las Tesis on November 25, 2019, amid massive protests against economic inequality and patriarchy that arose in October of 2019.
During the protests, police sexual abuse was widely reported. The song, which was written before the protests began, was the feminist response to this type of violence. Nearly 17% of criminal complaints filed against state authorities were related to sexual abuse, according to Human Rights Watch.
‘Hundreds of people have lost their eyesight, hundreds more are crippled and thousands jailed and tortured, but the demonstrations and community organising continues’.
The feminist protest has inspired women in Mexico, Colombia, Kenya, India, and all over Europe and the United States to denounce similar patterns of violence.
This dance was also performed by indigenous Kichwa, Shuar, Waorani, Achuar and Shiwiar women from the Amazon of Ecuador:
A feminist transition anthem
The choreography was based on the work of Argentinian feminist and professor Rita Laura Segato, who inspired Las Tesis to show that “rape not just as a crime against an individual woman, but the expression of a larger social issue,” as reported by Quartz.
Therefore the song is addressed to the institutional pillars: “the Police, the judges, the State and the president”, which, as the lyrics say, are complicit in gender violence.
Athanasia Francis, who’s pursuing a Ph.D. on gendered violence in the United Kingdom, noted in The Conversation that “The Rapist is You” gained traction internationally because systemic gendered violence itself is transnational.
This transnational feminist response in the form of a song proposes solidarity and empathy in turbulent political times. It’s calling for an acknowledgement of sexual violence as a systemic and global problem in democratic institutions that, ironically, were created to prevent it.
For Spanish journalist Marta Borraz, the song also relieves women from self-blame when falling victim to sexual violence when the lyrics say “it’s not my fault, nor where I was, nor what I wore:”
The performance focuses on the impunity of sexual violence. It has become a collective cry that occupies public space, like a catharsis that is able to concentrate multiple sensations in order to change how things, especially guilt, are perceived.
In Kolkata, New York, and Karachi
“The Rapist is You” was also sung in protest against visits of high-level politicians. On January 8, 2020, an Indian feminist collective performed the song in Kolkata as part of the widespread protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city.
Aopala Banerjee, one of the performers, told Scroll.in that the group “wanted to highlight the patriarchal violence that Modi’s idea of a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu Nation) represents.”
Recently, women in New York City performed the anthem outside of where Harvey Weinstein, the former Hollywood movie producer accused by nearly 100 women for sexual abuse, stands trial for rape.
In Karachi, Pakistani women of the AuratMarch2020 movement performed the song in Urdu. They are calling for people to join them on March 8, 2020, International Women’s Day, to march “for economic, reproductive, environmental justice, and the right to our city,” as mentioned on their Twitter profile.

In Chile the deployment of sexual violence as a tactic condoned by the regime of Pinera, has left hundreds of women brutally assaulted, raped and treated with sexual violence. La coreografía viral feminista “El violador eres tú” (“Un violador en tu camino”) que surgió en Chile sigue causando revuelo en todo el mundo, ya que inspira a las mujeres a protestar en contra del acoso y abuso sexual.
Una protesta tuvo lugar en Bangladesh, en donde más de mil personas protestaron contra la violación de una estudiante de la Universidad de Daca. Muchas manifestantes cantaron la versión bangladesí de la canción “El violador eres tú”.
Y la culpa no era mía, ni dónde estaba ni cómo vestía.

La protesta se realizó el 6 de enero frente al Museo Nacional de Bangladesh adyacente al campus.
Aproximadamente 500 casos de violación y abuso se han presentado en el área metropolitana de Daca en 2019.
Este canal de televisión en línea hizo un video musical en el que usó la canción bangladesí como música de fondo una y otra vez en interpetaciones de distintos países. “El violador eres tú” se convirtió en el himno feminista después de que las mujeres chilenas bailaron y cantaron la coreografía creada por la colectiva feminista Las Tesis el 25 de noviembre de 2019, en medio de protestas masivas contra la desigualdad económica que surgió en octubre de 2019.
Durante las protestas se reportaron ampliamente abusos por parte de la policía. La canción, que fue escrita antes de que las protestas empezaran, fue la respuesta feminista a este tipo de violencia. Casi el 17 % de las denuncias penales presentadas contra autoridades estatales tenía relación con abuso sexual, según Human Rights Watch.

En Calcuta, Nueva York y Karachi
