The environmental situation in the Mar Menor, Europe’s biggest salt water lagoon, continues to be worrying. This Friday thousands of dead fish and crustaceans have been found again and the Cartagena City Council has closed nine beaches to facilitate cleaning.
Specifically, the red flag has been raised and access to the beaches of La Gola, Playa Paraíso, Playa Honda, Caravaning, Mar de Cristal, Islas Menores, Puerto Bello and Cala del Pino and Los Alemanes has been limited.
From the Consistory, residents are requested not to approach these areas to facilitate cleaning tasks and avoid any risk due to the passage of machinery.
This is the fifth consecutive day in which dead fish appear on beaches in the area, which has led to criticism from the opposition towards the regional government of Fernando López Miras, from the Popular Party, which has initiated an investigation into the causes, among complaints by the opposition and environmentalists of the deterioration of this natural area.
The general director of the Mar Menor, Miriam Pérez, assured this Thursday that in the analyzes carried out “certain areas have been detected”, more in the interior, “with hypoxia” [oxygen deficit].
The first measurements showed an increase of about three degrees in the water temperature, although the oxygen values ”were not significantly low”, in line with the results obtained last week, when the monitoring did not reflect an “alarming decrease” levels, he said at a press conference.
Environmentalists have denounced the death of the fish.
“However, we warned that an extreme heat wave, for example, could cause a change in trend,” said the CEO, who stressed that “we have been warning for weeks that a change in conditions could cause a rupture of the ecosystem with serious consequences ”.
The regional government has demanded from the Secretary of State for the Environment “a protocol to deal with a possible episode of anoxia in the Mar Menor”, and has required it to, by virtue of its powers, “carry out the actions it considers necessary to alleviate the damage that this new episode may cause on the ecosystem ”.
We can denounce “the drama” of the Mar Menor
For its part, Podemos has launched through social networks a video with which it intends to reveal “the true causes of the dramatic state in which the Mar Menor is,” party sources reported in a statement.
The Secretary of Organization of Podemos, Ángel Luis Hernández, has asked citizens “not to be carried away by the intoxication campaigns of the regional government and the lobbies of multinational agribusiness companies.”
“The truth is at the bottom, hidden under tons of nitrates and lies,” Hernández assured, paraphrasing the title of the video released by the ‘purple’ formation and collected by Europa Press.
According to Podemos, “in less than 48 hours the regional government of López Miras has completely changed its version of events, first ruling out that we were facing a new episode of anoxia and giving in shortly after to the evidence.”
Faced with the situation in this salty lagoon, a group of professionals from the University of Murcia together with the lawyer and professor of Philosophy of Law, Teresa Vicente Giménez, have launched an initiative to convert the Mar Menor into a legal entity and have its own Rights.
For Parliament to debate a Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) it must have 500,000 signatures and they must be obtained in a specified time. In this case, the deadline ends on October 28. Despite all the difficulties caused by the health crisis, the proposal already has 275,000 signatures, so it only needs another 225,000.

La situación medioambiental en el Mar Menor continúa siendo preocupante. Este viernes se han vuelto a hallar miles de peces y crustáceos muertos y el Ayuntamiento de Cartagena ha cerrado nueve playas para facilitar las labores de limpieza.
En concreto, se ha izado la bandera roja y se ha limitado el acceso a los arenales de la Gola, Playa Paraíso, Playa Honda, Caravaning, Mar de Cristal, Islas Menores, Puerto Bello y Cala del Pino y Los Alemanes.
Desde el Consistorio se solicita a los vecinos que no se acerquen a estas zonas para facilitar las labores de limpieza y evitar cualquier riesgo por el paso de maquinaria.
Se trata del quinto día consecutivo en el que aparecen peces muertos en playas de la zona, lo que ha suscitado las críticas de la oposición hacia el gobierno regional de Fernando López Miras, del Partido Popular, que ha iniciado una investigación sobre las causas, entre las denuncias por parte de la oposición y de los ecologistas del deterioro de este espacio natural.
La directora general del Mar Menor, Miriam Pérez, aseguró este jueves que en los análisis realizados «sí se han detectado ciertas zonas», más en el interior, «con hipoxia» [déficit de oxígeno].
Las primeras mediciones mostraron un incremento de cerca de tres grados en la temperatura del agua, si bien los valores de oxígeno «no eran significativamente bajos», en línea con los resultados obtenidos la semana pasada, cuando la monitorización no reflejó un «descenso alarmante» de los niveles, afirmó en rueda de prensa.
«Sin embargo, avisábamos de que una ola de calor extremo, por ejemplo, sí que podría provocar un cambio de tendencia», ha apuntado la directora general, quien ha destacado que «llevábamos semanas avisando de que un cambio en las condiciones podría provocar una ruptura del ecosistema con graves consecuencias».
El Gobierno regional ha reclamado a la Secretaría de Estado de Medio Ambiente «un protocolo para hacer frente a un posible episodio de anoxia en el Mar Menor», y le ha requerido para que, en virtud de sus competencias, «realice las actuaciones que considere necesarias para paliar los daños que este nuevo episodio pueda provocar sobre el ecosistema».
Podemos denuncia «el drama» del Mar Menor
Por su parte, Podemos ha lanzado a través de las redes sociales un vídeo con el que pretende revelar «las verdaderas causas del estado dramático en el que se encuentra el Mar Menor», informaron fuentes del partido en un comunicado.
El Secretario de Organización de Podemos, Ángel Luis Hernández, ha pedido a la ciudadanía «no dejarse llevar por las campañas de intoxicación del Gobierno regional y los lobbies de las multinacionales de la agroindustria».
«La verdad está en el fondo, oculta bajo toneladas de nitratos y mentiras», ha asegurado Hernández parafraseando el título del vídeo divulgado por la formación ‘morada’ y que recoge Europa Press.
Según Podemos, «en menos de 48 horas el Gobierno regional de López Miras ha cambiado totalmente su versión de los hechos, descartando primero que estuviéramos ante un nuevo episodio de anoxia y cediendo poco después ante la evidencia».
Ante la situación que vive esta laguna salada, un grupo de profesionales de la Universidad de Murcia junto a la abogada y profesora de Filosofía del Derecho, Teresa Vicente Giménez, han lanzado una iniciativa para convertir al Mar Menor en persona jurídica y que tenga sus propios derechos.
Para que el Parlamento debata sobre una Iniciativa Legislativa Popular (ILP) tiene que contar con 500.000 firmas y deben conseguirse en un tiempo determinado. En este caso el plazo termina el 28 de octubre. Pese a todas las dificultades sobrevenidas por la crisis sanitaria, la propuesta ya cuenta con 275.000 firmas, por lo que solo necesita otras 225.000.
