We’re breathing TOXIC AIR: more than 500,000 people KILLED in EU in 2021, data shows

from thefreeonline on 25th Nov 2023 by Ajit Niranjan at The Guardian

European Environment Agency says half of deaths could have been avoided by cutting pollution to recommended limits

Dirty air killed more than half a million people in the EU in 2021, estimates show, and about half of the deaths could have been avoided by cutting pollution to the limits recommended by doctors.

“The figures released today by the EEA remind us that air pollution is still the number one environmental health problem in the EU,” said Virginijus Sinkevičius, the EU’s environment commissioner.

What Is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD?

Doctors say air pollution is one of the biggest killers in the world but death tolls will drop quickly if countries clean up their economies. Between 2005 and 2021, the number of deaths from PM2.5 in the EU fell 41%, and the EU aims to reach 55% by the end of the decade.

The WHO, which tightened its air quality guidelines in 2021, warns that no level of air pollution can be considered safe but has set upper limits for certain pollutants. The European parliament voted in September to align the EU’s air quality rules with the WHO’s but decided to delay doing so until 2035.

“The good news is that clean air policy works, and our air quality is improving,” said Sinkevičius. “But we need to do better still, and bring pollution levels down further.”

For the first time, the EEA estimated the full burden of disease from air pollution. As well as looking at the raw death tolls, the researchers worked out how many more years the population was living with diseases brought on by bad air.

For some health problems, such as lung cancer and ischaemic heart disease, the extra step changed little. But for others, such as asthma, it revealed high levels of suffering that had been overlooked in mortality statistics.

“When people get lung cancer, normally they die very quickly,” said Alberto González Ortiz, an EEA air pollution researcher. “For other diseases – especially asthma but also diabetes or also chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – there is also an important contribution of this state of living with disability.”

For chronic obstructive pulmonary disease brought on by PM2.5 pollution in 2021, the EEA estimated about 150,000 years of life have been lost across the EU and about the same number of years of disability.

“People can live for a long period in a bad condition,” said González Ortiz. “Considering only mortality, we were underestimating the impact of air pollution.”

Burning fossil fuels, driving cars and farming livestock release large volumes of toxic gas and harmful particles that people then breathe. The smallest of these particles, known as PM2.5, can pass into the bloodstream, where they spread through the body and damage organs from the brains down to reproductive organs.

An investigation by the Guardian this year found 98% of people in Europe were breathing air clogged with so many pollutants it breached WHO guidelines. The burden of disease, as shown in the EEA results, also falls mostly in eastern and south-eastern Europe.

Leena Ylä-Mononen, the executive director of the EEA, said: “The positive news is that authorities at European, national and local levels are taking action to reduce emissions through measures like promoting public transport or cycling in city centres, and through updated legislation.”

Gaza: Censored Essay exposes ongoing Western Colonial Genocide Mentality – Read it HERE

from thefreeonline on 26th Nov 2023 by Rabea Eghbariah The Nation

Here’s the genocide piece Harvard Law Review refused to publish

On Saturday, the board of the Harvard Law Review voted not to publish “The Ongoing Nakba: Towards a Legal Framework for Palestine,” a piece by Rabea Eghbariah, a human rights attorney completing his doctoral studies at Harvard Law School. Today, The Nation is sharing the essay they refused to run.

“Genocide is a crime. It is a legal framework. It is unfolding in Gaza. And yet, the inertia of legal academia, especially in the United States, has been chilling.

Clearly, it is much easier to dissect the case law rather than navigate the reality of death. It is much easier to consider genocide in the past tense rather than contend with it in the present. Legal scholars tend to sharpen their pens after the smell of death has dissipated and moral clarity is no longer urgent.

Some may claim that the invocation of genocide, especially in Gaza, is fraught. But does one have to wait for a genocide to be successfully completed to name it? This logic contributes to the politics of denial.

When it comes to Gaza, there is a sense of moral hypocrisy that undergirds Western epistemological approaches, one which mutes the ability to name the violence inflicted upon Palestinians. But naming injustice is crucial to claiming justice. If the international community takes its crimes seriously, then the discussion about the unfolding genocide in Gaza is not a matter of mere semantics.

The UN Genocide Convention defines the crime of genocide as certain acts “committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such.” These acts include “killing members of a protected group” or “causing serious bodily or mental harm” or “deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.”

Numerous statements made by top Israeli politicians affirm their intentions. There is a forming consensus among leading scholars in the field of genocide studies that “these statements could easily be construed as indicating a genocidal intent,” as Omer Bartov, an authority in the field, writes.

“We are in a religious war here. I’m with Israel. Do whatever the hell you have to do to defend yourself. Level the place,” Lindsey Graham told Fox News.

More importantly, genocide is the material reality of Palestinians in Gaza: an entrapped, displaced, starved, water-deprived population of 2.3 million facing massive bombardments and a carnage in one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Over 14,000 people have already been killed. That is one person out of every 200 people in Gaza. Tens of thousands are injured, and over 45% of homes in Gaza have been destroyed.

The United Nations Secretary General said that Gaza is becoming a “graveyard for children,” but a cessation of the carnage—a ceasefire—remains elusive.

Israel continues to blatantly violate international law: dropping white phosphorus from the sky, dispersing death in all directions, shedding blood, shelling neighborhoods, striking schools, hospitals, and universities, bombing churches and mosques, wiping out families, and ethnically cleansing an entire region in both callous and systemic manner. What do you call this?

The Center for Constitutional Rights issued a thorough, 44-page, factual and legal analysis, asserting that “there is a plausible and credible case that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian population in Gaza.” Raz Segal, a historian of the Holocaust and genocide studies, calls the situation in Gaza “a textbook case of Genocide unfolding in front of our eyes.”

The Intercept revealed on 21 November that Facebook has allowed incendiary advertisements that promote violence against Palestinians to appear on its platform; more specifically, several ads calling for a “Holocaust for the Palestinians.”

The inaugural chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno Ocampo, notes that “Just the blockade of Gaza—just that—could be genocide under Article 2(c) of the Genocide Convention, meaning they are creating conditions to destroy a group.”

A group of over 800 academics and practitioners, including leading scholars in the fields of international law and genocide studies, warn of “a serious risk of genocide being committed in the Gaza Strip.” A group of seven UN Special Rapporteurs has alerted to the “risk of genocide against the Palestinian people” and reiterated that they “remain convinced that the Palestinian people are at grave risk of genocide.”

Thirty-six UN experts now call the situation in Gaza “a genocide in the making.” How many other authorities should I cite? How many hyperlinks are enough?

And yet, leading law schools and legal scholars in the United States still fashion their silence as impartiality and their denial as nuance. Is genocide really the crime of all crimes if it is committed by Western allies against non-Western people?

Lockheed Factory UNDER SIEGE

from thefreeonline on 24th Nov 2023 by Freedom News

Palestine Action has this morning taken down the Bedford premises of the world’s largest weapons company, Lockheed Martin, with a double blockade which has seen both factory entrances locked off, with activists secured to vehicles to prevent removal.

The two groups of activists have since been joined by a demonstration, with Bedford residents mobilising to maintain the Lockheed blockade. The action, as with all by Palestine Action, has been taken in solidarity with the Palestinian people, who have experienced almost seven straight weeks of unrelenting bombing – bombing reliant on Lockheed Martin fighter bombers.

As such, the action today has rendered the high-security premises in Ampthill inoperable, preventing its ability to manufacture weaponry for Israel. The site has been covered in red paint to symbolise the Palestinian bloodshed for which Lockheed’s operations are directly responsible.

This campaign of genocide against Palestinians has now claimed the lives of 15,000 people in Gaza, along with over 200 in the West Bank. Airstrikes have murdered the vast majority of Palestinians slaughtered in Gaza – airstrikes primarily committed by Lockheed Martin’s F-16 class of fighter jets, the ‘workhorse‘ of the current onslaught.

The cruelty of the Israeli occupation cannot be divorced from the weapons companies which enable its violence – Lockheed Martin not least of all.

Lockheed Martin provides the deadly ‘Hellfire‘ used in levelling Gaza, including the new Hellfire R9X, seeing their first battle deployments. The R9X’s effective targeting of the Al-Shifa hospital promises to be a lucrative advertisement for Lockheed.

Lockheed further boasts that Israel’s F-35 jets have the “fingerprints of British ingenuity” on “dozens of the aircraft’s key components”.

By taking action to interrupt the flow of these aircraft and weapons to Israel, these activists’ intervention specifically aimed to preserve life and protect property in Gaza. Israel is not the only entity which is guilty of genocide – the arms companies which make this violence possible all have blood on their hands. Palestine Action will react when the government has failed to prevent such abhorrent activities from taking place in Britain.

3 of up to 20 US captives may be released in Gaza today- Bombing finally STOPS?-

from thefreeonline on 24th Nov 2023 By Ben Bartee at Global Research Report updated today

‘Three of the over 20 Americans could be part of the first group of hostages released: two adults and a 3-year-old girl named Abigail, a senior Biden administration official said’.

Families of the 3 US hostages who may be released

However Israeli officials tried to exclude release of captives from other nationalities “Israel will not exchange Palestinian prisoners in exchange for non-Israeli hostages, a senior Israeli official who gave NBC News details on an agreement with Hamas..” NBC News: 2 of the US captives, Judith and Natalie Raanan, have already been released.

“Over 10,000 Palestinian political prisoners are now being held in Israeli prisons. Most of them are imprisoned without or awaiting trial, or in “administrative detention”. In effect they too are ‘hostages’.

US media have been censoring the identities and even the exact number of the US citizens imprisoned. Israeli society is more open with a huge protest movement demanding freedom for the hostages and an end to Israeli carpet and bunker busting bombing of Gaza, which Hamas officials say has killed at least 50 of the captives, along with up to 14,000 Gazans + thousands still under the rubble”.

Relief’ in war-torn Gaza as truce takes effect in Israel-Hamas war

A Qatar-mediated four-day truce has taken effect in Israel’s war on Gaza. The first pause after seven weeks of bombardment has been met with relief by Palestinians.

“The landmark deal that will also involve a four-day pause in fighting, the delivery of hundreds of aid trucks, and the release of 150 Palestinian women and children* held in Israeli jails.”

*Note that when Israeli civilians are held in Gaza, they were “kidnapped” and are termed “hostages,” but when Israeli jails Palestinian women and children with no charges or judicial process of any kind, they do not receive the benefit of the same designation in Western corporate state media. That’s how subtle propaganda can get, and it’s easy to miss it if you’re not attuned to the pettiness with which these organizations play semantical games.

It appears Israel is not making any effort to get non-Israeli hostages released — only Israeli and some US citizens

Israel’s strategic play here is obvious to anyone not blinded by its powerful propaganda network that extends, unfortunately, deep into American corporate state media.

In the immediate term, the continued captivity of all nationalities by Hamas serves Israel’s interests more than their release would.

It serves as a valuable propaganda tool to gin up anger and provides an ongoing pretext to do whatever Israel likes in Gaza with impunity under the guise of pursuing the release of hostages.

Western brands hit hard by boycott campaign against Israeli goods

from thefreeonline 24th Nov 2023 by Aletho News

A boycott campaign against Israeli products over the occupying regime’s war on the Gaza Strip has severely affected Western fast-food giants in several Arab countries, with the move having the potential to spread to other countries across the globe.

Freedom and justice For Gaza: Boycott action against 7 complicit …

Weeks after Israel waged a brutal war on the besieged Gaza Strip, a boycott campaign against Israeli goods started to gain momentum in Egypt, Jordan and Turkey, significantly hitting Western fast-food giants like McDonald’s, Starbucks, and KFC.

The impacted companies are either perceived to have taken pro-Israeli stances in the war or are alleged to have financial ties to Israel or investments there.

According to the Gaza-based health ministry, at least 14,532 Palestinians, including 6,000 children and 3,920 women, have been killed and more than 35,000 others injured by Israeli strikes since October 7, when the Israeli regime launched a full-scale war on the densely-populated enclave.

“I feel that even if I know this will not have a massive impact on the war, then this is the least we can do as citizens of different nations so we don’t feel like our hands are covered in blood,” said 31-year-old Cairo resident Reham Hamed, who is boycotting US fast food chains and some cleaning products.

As the global pressure is mounting on Tel Aviv over its atrocities in the Palestinian sliver, there are signs that the boycott campaign is also spreading in some other Arab countries, including Kuwait and Morocco.

BDS Movement (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) – Israel Team

The boycott calls of the protest campaign have already circulated on social media and expanded to include dozens of companies and products, urging shoppers to shift to local alternatives.

In Jordan, citizens who support the protest campaign sometimes enter McDonald’s and Starbucks branches in the country to encourage a few customers to take their business elsewhere.

“No one is buying these products,” said Ahmad Al-Zaro, a cashier at a large supermarket in the capital Amman where customers were choosing local brands instead.

The current boycott campaign could be considered the latest part of the pro-Palestine Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against the Israeli regime.

The BDS movement, which is modeled after the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, was initiated in 2005 by over 170 Palestinian organizations that were pushing for “various forms of boycott against Israel until it meets its obligations under international law.”

Thousands of volunteers worldwide have since joined the BDS movement, which calls for people and groups across the world to cut economic, cultural, and academic ties to Tel Aviv to help promote the Palestinian cause.

In Gaza BDS gives us hope | BDS Movement

The movement has been so successful in causing economic damage to the Tel Aviv regime that pro-Israel groups have labeled it “an existential threat.”
