Apart from these first protests, the unions Confederació General del Treball de Catalunya (CGT-anarcosyndicalist) and the Intersindical Alternativa de Catalunya (IAC) have called partial work stoppages of two hours, from 12 to 2 p.m

Around midday several rallies are called at 12 pm and 12.30 pm, and at 6 pm a demonstration has been called in Parc del Clot.

Since the early hours of the morning, Barcelona has experienced the first mobilizations this Wednesday in a day of protests in solidarity with Palestine to call for an end to the attacks in Gaza.

Since a quarter past eight in the morning and for approximately half an hour, the demonstrators have blocked traffic in three points of the city: on Avinguda Meridiana, at Sarajevo bridge, towards the center of the city; on the Gran Via, at the height of Carrer del Moianès, in both directions , and at the Traversera de Dalt, also in both directions..

In a statement, the CGT of Catalonia has assured that the strike aims to denounce the “situation of impoverishment to which the working class is subjected” and the worsening living conditions of workers due to the wars. In this sense, the CGT denounces the “massacre of the state of Israel” in the Gaza Strip and demands an end to this genocide.

Events in the Middle East are spinning out of control. In the last week, the United States has attacked Houthi positions on the Yemeni mainland 7 times while the Houthis have launched 5 attacks on commercial vessels and US warships in the Red Sea.

At the same time, Iran has launched multiple attacks on sites in Syria, Iraq and Pakistan, while Israel has hit targets in both Lebanon and Damascus.

6th Feb 2024 Despite the US/UK fleet pounding Yemen yet another British and a US-owned vessel have been hit by Houthi drones

off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea, again with zero deaths, says the UK’s Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) service and a security firm. https://www.rt.com/news/591952-houthis-attack-uk-ship/

Soon after the attack, a spokesman for the Houthi group, Brig. General Yahya Saree, released a statement claiming that the militants have attacked two separate vessels in the Red Sea, an American ship called the Morning Tide and and the ‘Star Nasia’ , a Marshall Islands–flagged British ship.

The Star Nasia is confirmed as British owned, but had tried to appear Chinese to avoid Houthi attacks

The firm Furadino Shipping, which owns the Morning Tide, has told AP that their ship was indeed attacked but noted that no one was hurt in the incident

Adding more fuel to the fire, the IDF has continued its relentless assault on Palestinians living in Gaza resulting in scores of new deaths and injuries. In short, there’s been a sharp uptick in military activity across the Middle East that is steadily increasing.

This suggests that the low-intensity conflict we have seen for the last few weeks is about to explode into something much more violent, far-reaching and unpredictable. Many analysts believe we are on the brink of full-blown regional war which—in view of recent developments—may be unavoidable. This is from an article at the Washington Post:

The Biden administration is crafting plans for a sustained military campaign targeting the Houthis in Yemen after 10 days of strikes failed to halt the group’s attacks on maritime commerce…

Officials say they don’t expect that the operation will stretch on for years like previous U.S. wars in Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria. At the same time they acknowledge they can identify no end date or provide an estimate for when the Yemenis’ military capability will be adequately diminished…..

While the attacks have so far taken a greater toll on Europe than the United States…the Houthi campaign is already beginning to reshape the global shipping map. Some firms have chosen to reroute ships around the Cape of Good Hope off southern Africa, while major oil companies including BP and Shell suspended shipments through the area…

“It’s impossible to forecast exactly what’s going to happen, and certainly not [to predict] future operations,” the first U.S. official said. “But the principle that it simply can’t be tolerated for a terrorist organization … with these advanced capabilities to essentially shut down or control shipping through a key international choke point is one that we feel very strongly about.”…
