Rob Ray interviews the editors.

Could you explain the background of the collective?

We created Radon Journal to fill a niche that we wished existed when we were young: the intersection of science fiction and anarchism. We made a new space expressly for those who want to look toward the stars while envisioning blueprints for a better society. Anarchist praxis often deals with working in the present to build a better future, and so extending this timeline a little further naturally provides excellent sci-fi.

A large portion of what Radon does is outreach to educate the public about what these concepts entail. Because science fiction is more than just robots and spaceships and anarchism is more than Molotov cocktails and black bloc.

Two of the co-founders spent their high school years DIY-publishing science fiction books together, went into the world to be independently radicalised into anarchists, then reconnected 12 years later to combine their passion and skills for a new generation of writers.

Radon also focuses on transhumanism in its journal because anarcho-transhumanism is one of the newest and most misunderstood anarchist schools of thought and melds perfectly with what we do as a sub-genre of science fiction.

Ursula Le Guin, the most successful anarchist sci-fi writer of our time (in terms of reaching minds), passed in 2018 and devastated us. We aim to continue her legacy of combining anarchist politics with science fiction stories and showing the world that an egalitarian future is possible while also warning of potential dystopian worlds if we’re not vigilant.

How difficult has it been finding a balance between dystopian, generally speculative, and more “utopian” (or post-scarcity) approaches?

Dystopia does seem to be one of our most popular submission categories. And it’s not hard to see why. Late-stage capitalism continues to tighten its grip, Earth is dying, and the world is falling back into fascist dictatorships. Our millennial generation has discovered that the promises of our future were lies and that the only things we can count on are what we claw back through direct action.

We would like to see more post-scarcity stories submitted to us serving as tales of how anarchist societies might exist in a sci-fi setting. That said, we let each issue coalesce into its own identity based on the nature of the stories that are submitted during each issue reading window. The more utopian and solarpunk stories tend to find homes in magazines specifically reading for those genres.

The majority of our submissions come from science fiction authors who include leftist social commentary in their work, rather than anarchists who write science fiction. We would like this ratio to balance out more in the future.

Transhuman fiction has had a fairly strong uptake in anarchist circles, possibly more so than solarpunk. What do you think the draw has been?

To us, transhumanism and anarchism logically go together and complement one another. Anarchism, as we all know, aims to increase our general social and economic freedoms.

Meanwhile, transhumanism aims to give us physical freedom and remove scourges of human existence, such as death and human limitations.

The concept is likely gaining attention due to the technology around us now increasing at an exponential rate. It is natural that we pay more attention to the implications and possibilities of technology as both individuals and society grapple with change.

We want to be free to explore not only this planet but the entire cosmos, unshackled by such arbitrary things such as money or natural life-span. There is so much to learn about our reality, and we humans are endlessly curious. There’s no reason why we should let ourselves suffer and die if we can prevent it

Conversely eugenicist types can also be attracted via the ‘improvement’ aspect. How have you tended to work through that end of things?

We believe that any parent would jump at the chance to easily and safely prevent diseases in their child. But we recognise that the technology could easily be used by the wrong hands and accompany evil eugenics practices. So, do we prevent any technological progress from occurring due to fear of misuse? What happens if capitalists use this technology? How would anarchists use it instead? Is the ethical use of new technology somewhere in the middle? We don’t know the answers, and it is in exploring this middle ground that great stories are born, and what we hope to publish.

You’re also right that there are several loud right-wing techno-libertarians (such as Elon Musk) who have done a shockingly good job of tying themselves to the concept of transhumanism. There is an ongoing battle being fought in most transhuman groups (especially large ones in the US) between the left and right for ownership of the label. Some Radon editors are semi-active in these groups working with other anarchists and communists to push out the right-libertarians and reclaim the label in popular culture before it’s too late.

We firmly believe that transhumanism is inherently a far-left philosophy intimately tied with anarchist thought. Radon exclusively approaches transhumanism through a social anarchist lens and rejects all tech bros and their beliefs.

Few technologies are inherently moral or immoral. Every invention increases humanity’s ability to do good equally as much as it increases our ability to do evil. For instance, the invention of the aeroplane allowed us to quickly and easily reach and connect with our fellow person. But it also allowed humanity to quickly and efficiently kill entire populations.

I enjoyed Jonathan Olfert’s Whiskey Mud (Issue 2), and the idea of exploited or restricted minds runs through many of your stories — there’s a crossover with cyberpunk in that sense. What are your thoughts on this concept as a preoccupation of modern sci-fi?

We may not have cyberpunk listed as one of our main tenets, but our editors equally love the sub-genre. Blade Runner and Altered Carbon are among our favourites. Who knows, maybe we’ll add it as a listed term one year, as we would love more cyberpunk submissions.

We subsequently have found that farmers will get payment for mass PCR testing of animals and for culling or intentional killing of poultry and disposal.

The Dispossessed at 50: Anarchist Utopia against Intergalactic Colonisers and Naked Imperialism

Ursula K. Le Guin’s ‘anarchist utopia’ was an anguished response to te Vietnam War. Its political power endures

From The Conversation by Alexander Howard

Ursula K. Le Guin is one of the most revered science fiction writers of all time. Her groundbreaking science-fiction novel The Dispossessed, written against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, speaks to historically specific forms of geopolitical violence and societal malaise. However, it continues to resonate today.

As I write, less than 200 metres away, pro-Palestinian students are camped out on the University of Sydney’s lawns, protesting the ongoing war in Gaza. These protests are being compared to the Vietnam student protests of 1968, which in part inspired Le Guin’s book.

Le Guin changed science fiction. When she started publishing in the late 1950s, the genre tended to privilege scientific accuracy and technological credibility. But the ethically minded Le Guin used her work to challenge conventional norms and explore alternative societal structures, pushing readers to rethink their perceptions of the world around them.

The novelist Margaret Atwood confirms this:

Le Guin was always asking the same urgent question: what sort of world do you want to live in? Her own choice would have been gender equal, racially equal, economically fair and self-governing, but that was not on offer.

Anthropological sci-fi

The Dispossessed, one of a small handful to win best novel in all three of science fiction’s most prestigious awards (the Hugo, Locus and Nebula), is a fictional thought experiment

It’s set in what most science fiction authors and aficionados would call a future history: a narrative framework detailing events and developments at a projected point in time, often spanning decades or even centuries.

As a literary device, it affords writers a means to create a cohesive and consistent timeline of future events, societies and technological advances.

The Dispossessed is an integral component of Le Guin’s acclaimed Hainish Cycle, made up of seven novels and multiple short stories. While The Dispossessed is the fifth in the series, its narrative puts it at the chronological beginning. This means it can also be read as a standalone book – or an alternative way into the sequence.

Blind and deaf: how Israel lost the north: Now – however big the Israeli military might be – they’re effectively blinded

NEW- The Free is now on Telegram: t.me/thefreeonline.

It seemed like a bunch of nothing, but it adds up. Hezbollah had a list of Israel’s intelligence gathering posts in the north and has spent months methodically eye poking them, like Odysseus and the Cyclops. Now – however big the Israeli military might be – they’re effectively blinded.

Map shows the new buffer zone in the north, as reported by Haaretz

As Hezbollah opens bigger and bigger gaps in the occupation state’s air defenses, they can fire larger missiles with more frequency into Israel, with better and deeper penetration. For Israel, this attrition is a compounding problem.

Their air defenses are a connected system and the network is increasingly returning 404. Take for example, the destruction of the $230 million dollar SKYDEW blimp/spy balloon.

This balloon is designed to detect low-flying drones and missiles, especially important as this is the vector most used by the Resistance. SKYDEW can stay up much longer – and is relatively cheaper – than planes, and can ‘see’ much further than ground-based systems. It was also placed in a highly strategic area that allowed them to cover attacks from Syria, Iraq and, to a lesser degree, from Hezbollah, specifically on the port of Haifa. But now the party’s over. Look at the balloon now:

SKYDEW is now shriveled and useless – a big loss, which also signals a big breakdown. As the SKYDEW ‘Target Card‘ (from Hezbollah intelligence) says, it was protected by an electronic monitoring and jamming system against drones and UAVs,” and “secured by three layers of missile interception systems: Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Hetz [Arrow].” That all got sliced through like the layers of an onion, leaving Israeli defenses naked.

The northern front is porous now, as Israeli settlers know better than anybody. To quote Moshe Davidovitz, head of the Asher regional council:

“Ten rockets fell in the center of the country and the media is in an uproar — the country is in turmoil,” he wrote. “But every day dozens of rockets are fired towards the confrontation line settlements and the Galilee, including anti-tank missiles and suicide drones, and the country remains silent. Once again, it’s proof that the north is not being counted.”

Hezbollah of course, has counted the north. They have a list of Israeli military targets and they go through them one by one. Take, for example, the Mount Meron Air Surveillance Base, one of the two main bases in the occupation state. This is what a senior Israeli air force official says about the base, in a 2016 article by Maariv:

“The air control system is crucial for the operational capability of the Air Force. Its main duty is to protect the occupied airspace. Through the control system, we activate all capabilities to protect the sky, including helicopters, aircraft, missiles, and other classified systems.”

And this is what Hezbollah intelligence released, as they were bombing it:

Firstly, the Meron Air Surveillance Base is located on the summit of Mount Jarmaq [“Mount Meron”] in northern occupied Palestine, the highest peak in occupied Palestine. Meron Base is the sole center for administration, surveillance, and air control in the northern part of the usurping entity and there is no major alternative to it. It is one of two main bases in the entire usurping entity: “Meron” in the north, and the second being “Mitzpe Ramon” in the south.

The Meron Base is responsible for organizing, coordinating, and managing all air operations towards Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Cyprus, and the northern part of the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea. Additionally, this base is a main center for electronic jamming operations in the aforementioned directions and is staffed by a large number of elite officers and soldiers of the zionist forces.

Secondly, the fighters of the Islamic Resistance at 07:50 AM on Saturday, January 6, 2024, as a part of the preliminary response to the crime of assassinating the great leader Sheikh Saleh Al-Arouri and his martyr brothers in the southern suburb [Dahiyeh] of Beirut, targeted the Meron Air Surveillance Base with 62 missiles of various types, inflicting direct and confirmed hits.

Hezbollah has aired its attacks on Meron Air Base in countless videos now, and they have been relentless. It can get boring because the whole thing never fireballs, but each small hit adds up. Every time a hole in Israeli air defenses opens, the hole widens, because Hezbollah is damaging complex, interconnected systems.

Today, the Meron base can barely defend itself, let alone the region. Tel Aviv has responded by assassinating Hezbollah and allied leaders, but the resistance just name missiles after those martyrs and send more.

This is a battle of attrition and Hezbollah is paying attention while Israel is mindlessly lashing out. Completely distracted by its brutal military assault on civilians in Gaza, in the south, Israel has lost the battle for the north.

After months of this boring de-administrative work, Hezbollah has finally arrived at the good stuff. The occupation state’s northern air defenses today are like a ragged old mosquito net that the dog chased the cat through. It’s full of holes, and big ones.

Hezbollah can increasingly fire at will, with increasingly accurate weapons. For example, here is Hezbollah taking down a SKYSTAR 330 by drone-striking its Battalion 869 operator.

In this case, Hezbollah targeted not the spy balloon itself, but the balloon controllers, in three locations at the same timeWith the operators eliminated, the balloon drifted out of control, landing in Lebanon where some kids recovered it. This is the state of Israel’s eyes and ears in the north. They’re on the ground.

Iron ‘Done’

Israel has nothing worth calling an air-defense in the north anymore. The Iron Dome is done. Hezbollah can fire at will, and has for every single day for seven months now. Iraqi Resistance missiles are flying right over them, towards Haifa. Iran can overwhelm the entire national system whenever it wants. Israel can still offend the conscience, but they’re missile defenseless now. Even Hamas is hitting them, from within traumatized Gaza. It’s open season, and the settlers know it.

Israeli settlers openly bemoan their unsettled state all over the Hebrew press. Some were so pyrrhicly incensed they threatened to secede from the entire state and form the new State of Galilee. As The Jerusalem Post has said:

The straw that broke the camel’s back was the prime minister’s answer at the cabinet meeting to a question by Benny Gantz, as reported by N12. Gantz wondered if the residents would return to their homes on September 1, for the start of the school year, and Netanyahu replied, “What’s the worst that will happen if they return a few months after September 1?”
