The bodies of Palestinians killed in the latest Israeli massacre in Gaza were destroyed so far beyond recognition that doctors have only been able to give grieving families an anonymous bag of human remains to bury.
Coordinated antifascist defense has been inspiring, but it must grow to become omnipresent — Tuesday July 30 saw the start of an uprising of far-right terror on British streets. The Southport Mosque was viciously attacked after a vigil held for the child victims of the Southport stabbings. Despite the attempts of the community to hold […]
An estimated 800,000 Ukrainian men have gone “underground” due to the threat of military mobilization amid the conflict with Russia, a senior MP in Kiev, Dmitry Natalukha, has told the Financial Times.
The lawmaker stated the case for economic-driven exemptions from the draft.
Kiev introduced a harsh new system for military conscription earlier this year, which was intended to discourage draft avoidance through the threat of serious punishment.
One consequence was that businesses operating legally in Ukraine are now at a disadvantage compared to those in the ‘shadow economy,’ the FT explained.
Reclaim the Power activists held for conspiracy to disrupt Drax power station, while violent far right faces no pre-emptive raids — Reclaim the Power has announced the cancellation of the weekend’s climate camp at Drax power station, after morning raids seized key infrastructure. Officers from the Metropolitan police led local forces in a raid on Yorkshire, said eye witnesses. …
They arrested twenty two activists, who were preparing to transport infrastructure, sanitation and accessibility equipment to the upcoming climate camp at Drax power station.
Crashing sounds were heard from outside the site as vehicles and equipment were impounded. The detainees were taken to York police station, where they are being held for conspiracy charges: in this case, to interfere with key national infrastructure at Drax Power Station in Selby between 8 and 13 August. Media repeated the police’s claim they are “not against protest but against crime”.
This morning’s pre-emptive arrests, ahead of a peaceful protest, contrast sharply with the State’s failure to foil recent far right violence, said Reclaim the Power. “Black and Brown communities are under attack with fire and bricks and the police have made the unfathomable decision to divert resources away from those communities to arrest 22 people taking equipment to make a peaceful climate protest safe and accessible”, said the group in a statement.
Ever since July 29, Britain has been plunged into crisis, with incendiary far-riot rights sending towns and cities across the country spiraling into states of emergency. Vast mobs of armed, angry thugs, motivated by racist, Islamophobic animus, have vandalized homes, property and places of worship, violently clashed with police, and targeted hotels housing refugees with arson attacks in apparent stabs at mass murder. Hundreds of arrests have been made, and counter-protesters have taken to the streets in profusion to counter the upsurge of hatred
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged those responsible will face the “full force of the law” for their actions, and several perpetrators have already been sentenced to years in prison. Still, the situation remains gravely tense. Furthermore, in keeping with so many prior explosive, unanticipated episodes in modern British history, a vicious mainstream blame game has erupted, with ultimate responsibility for the upheaval being apportioned to a wide range of domestic and foreign actors and causes.
The unrest’s actual, and perhaps most apparent, sources have been mysteriously overlooked. For one, average Britons remain gripped by an ever-worsening economic cataclysm, in which the cost of essentials ever rises while living standards precipitously decline. The newly-elected Labour government has not only practically pledged to do nothing to alleviate the misery – by maintaining if not intensifying self-destructive austerity policies – but already exacerbated the dire situation significantly by slashing winter fuel payments, leaving millions facing life-threateningly freezing cold, without state support.
History shows that this milieu is invariably a fertile breeding ground for fascism to take root. With no mainstream alternative to the neoliberal status quo, desperate, disillusioned and dispossessed working-class Britons look to “outsiders” and extremists like Nigel Farage and Tommy Robinson for salvation in ever-greater numbers. And their remedy, as always, is to blame migrants, refugees and “the other” for all of society’s ills and their own personal deprivation rather than ruling elites.
Combined, these 5 face 21 years in jail for participating in a Zoom call to discuss disruptive protest action against catastrophic new fossil fuel licences.
At trial, the five weren’t allowed to defend their actions in context of the climate emergency. When they spoke the whole truth to the jury, 4 of the 5 were arrested multiple times in court and jailed. The jury entered guilty verdicts against all defendants after Judge Hehir removed all their legal defences, ruling that the climate crisis was ‘irrelevant’ to the trial.
UN Special Rapporteur on environmental defenders under the Aarhus Convention – Michel Forst “When, in the midst of a triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, a peaceful environmental protester like Mr. Shaw faces an extended prison sentence in the United Kingdom, alarm bells should go off not just across the United Kingdom, but across the international community also. It signals that fundamental pillars of a democratic society are right now in grave peril in the United Kingdom.”
The judge has been known to acquit people with excess money and corporations and also cops who rape vulnerable women.
Not big on petitions myself, but this is such a fucking abuse of power, such a miscarriage of justice that it warrants a signature imho
Sign the petition! Stop Jailing Those Telling The Truth. I signed a petition on Action Network telling the UK attorney general to stop imprisoning protesters telling the truth on climate. Cressie, Daniel, Lou, Lucia and Roger (the WholeTruthFive) have been sentenced to a combined 21 in prison, the harshest sentences for peaceful protest in UK history. Read this on actionnetwork.org >
