Catalonia: The Earth Revolts movement is born to promote large ecological mobilizations

Fifty organizations in defense of the territory in the Catalan Countries participated in the presentation of the new confluence of struggles to confront the ecosocial collapse.

The meeting took place on January 25 at the La Llavor Occupied Social Center in Prat de Llobregat., Barcelona.

(note.. the phrase Catalán Countries is used to include Catalán áreas in Baleares, France, Aragón, Valencia… But doesn’t imply any Statist claim)

It is Saturday, January 25 in Prat de Llobregat and it is nine in the morning.

There is little traffic and most of the buildings in the Fondo del Peixo Industrial Estate are closed.

Only one of the shutters is up. It is the old Centro de Estudios Llobregat, a huge abandoned building that was renamed the La Llavor Self-Managed Occupied Centre ten years ago.

There is a sense of expectation from the first hour. A constant buzz and a growing murmur fill the corridors of the squatted centre.

“La Llavor (‘the Seed’) works for those who fight,” says a graffiti (in Catalan) in the kitchen-café.

Today, within these walls, the phrase takes on its full meaning.

More than one hundred people from fifty organisations and groups have signed up to attend a presentation that is as mysterious as it is expected.

Revoltes de la Terra is the result of more than two itinerant years of meetings, encounters, debates, strategies and accumulation of forces between people and groups of environmentalists and those in defence of the territory.

In front of a crowd, one of the spokespersons explained that in recent years, “the eco-social situation has worsened and capitalist plunder is relentless,” adding that “if the system is totalizing, so must be the response.”

This ecological movement presents itself as a new “dynamic of struggle” to “unite forces,” following the impulse of climate movements that have emerged in recent years such as Rebellion or Extinction or Soulèvements de la Terre.

Revoltes de la Terra aims to organize meetings throughout the territory in alliance with local groups, where reflection and proposals can be combined with action against “ecocidal projects.”

At the same time, a spokesperson specifies, the meetings serve to “exemplify and denounce the same problems that exist on a global scale.”

Halfway between movement, organisation and the confluence of collectives, the proposal, says the spokesperson, is based on three axes: “confronting the techno-industrial system with blockades”, “learning to cover the needs to sustain life, creating community, sovereignty and autonomy” and “changing common sense, building a new perspective, a worldview that overcomes individualism, the destruction of nature and that respects the rest of the species”.

On the one hand, Revoltes de la Terra is inspired by the work of local, trade union and territorial platforms throughout the Catalan Countries: from SOS Costa Brava (Girona), Menys turisme més vida (Mallorca), Stop JJOO (Pyrenees) or No a la Mat (Castellón) to Aigua és vida or Revolta Pagesa.

On the other hand, it also seeks to strengthen historical environmental organisations, which for years have played a prominent role in the struggles for the territory, such as GOB Mallorca or Ecologistes en Acció.

Generational, territorial and strategic diversity
The composition of this new space is relevant: “We are committed to diversity, to breadth, to intergenerational, massive, festive, playful encounters that confront and go beyond the boundaries.

But where, above all, people come, have a good time and want to come back,” says a spokesperson.

Shortly afterwards, she celebrates the diversity that fills the space today, appealing to this continuing to be the guiding thread of the functioning of Revoltes de la Terra: “We address the conflict by playing with the composition of different strategies of struggle: legal resources, research, denunciation or direct action.

But we also need popular infrastructures, a large rearguard of care and all the skills and knowledge of farmers, artists, research professionals, people with trades, organised neighbours, activists…”.

In line with the idea of encounters throughout the territory, the profile of those attending the presentation of Revoltes de la Terra is also varied.

There are young activists from recent climate movements, older generation environmentalists with experience, neighbours integrated into local platforms that defend themselves against an urban development plan, a chemical factory or an incinerator, activists from social movements from all fronts of struggle, and also some young peasants.

The territorial origins of the people who arrive are also impressive. ,

The protests cover the plain of Lleida, from the Camp de Tarragona to the regions of Castellón, from the Pyrenees, from Mallorca to the coasts of Girona, and as far as Barcelona, the Vallès and the entire metropolitan area.

In the corridors of the social centre there is a small display of materials from struggles from all over, from the Stop Agroparc Gelida t-shirts to the books of Soulèvements de la Terre.

But above all, yellow and black predominate, a manifesto and a presentation banner: “We are revolts of the earth, we are the earth that rebels.”

After a lunch with products from the Llobregat delta, the choral work continues. Different local resistance groups present their campaigns and strategies to confront the threats in their territories, whether mining, chemical plants, industrial estates, macro farms or highways.

It is already night when a round of evaluations puts an end to the day.

A historic activist of the autonomous struggles shares with everyone his impression of the meeting: “Thank you for this day and everything that has happened here. I have enjoyed and reconnected with the illusion of seeing so many new faces, so many people willing to organize.”

People return to their territories with optimism. The shutter of the social center is lowered again and Revoltes de la Terra begins to walk.

Revoltes de la Terra is born, a new ecological movement that brings together dozens of organizations alrea in the Catalan Countries with the will to promote large mobilizations.

This ecological movement presents itself as a new “dynamic of struggles” to “unite forces”, following the path of climate movements that have emerged in recent years such as Rebellion or Extinction or Earth Uprisings. Thus, the objective is to organize meetings throughout the territory in alliance with local groups, where reflection and proposals can be combined with action against “ecocidal projects”.

As they have explained, Revoltes de la Terra is inspired by the work of platforms from all over the Catalan Countries such as SOS Costa Brava (Girona), Less tourism, more life (Mallorca), Stop JJOO (Pyrenees), No en la Mat (Castellón), Agua es vida or Revolta Pagesa. In addition, it also seeks to strengthen historical ecological entities, which for years have played a prominent role in the struggles for the territory, such as GOB Mallorca or Ecologists in Action.

Manifesto

«In these times we often fall into discouragement and anguish.

The world is under threat: the biophysical balances that keep the planet within habitable limits have been broken and droughts, downpours, floods, fires, hurricanes, etc. are occurring with increasing frequency and intensity, while ecocidal projects continue to put our lives and the future of humanity at risk.

Capital does not hesitate to sacrifice people and ecosystems necessary for life, in order to continue growing. Violence, injustice, racism and the colonization of common territories are worsening.

The extreme right is spreading, taking advantage of and deepening the accelerated deterioration of community values. Civilization is reeling in a crisis that feeds itself.

The urgency of the situation is evident and taking action is a collective responsibility, an unstoppable impulse: the radical defense of life.

More and more people are rebelling against the abyss that they want to impose on us and their false solutions to maintain the same patriarchal, capitalist and colonial system that has led us to the current economic, social and ecological crisis.

We organize ourselves taking as a reference the historical articulation of collective struggles that, here and everywhere, have confronted and are confronting the roots, impacts and consequences of the misunderstood “progress of the global north.”

We act to recover the future, we imagine the coexistence and joint work of different cultures and worldviews, and we stand in solidarity where resistance to capitalist devastation germinates, sprouts and expands.

We strengthen ourselves to face the complexity of the current moment, we break with the frustration of the lack of a future, and we sow confidence in a present that we want to be our own.

We are the land that rises up. The one that defends itself, transforms and celebrates to reappropriate the present and build new horizons of full life.

We want to end the systematic destruction of life, with ecocidal industries and the artificialization of the land.

We are not satisfied with enforcing their laws, we are committed to changing the culture that legitimizes them and thus articulating new forms of struggle.

We address the conflict by playing with the composition of different strategies and practices of struggle from comradeship.

We work with and for the diversity of collectives and people organized throughout the territory with the common principle of defending life and the means to sustain it.

Each local action in defense of a riverbank, a home, a piece of forest, an ancient fountain, a beach, a habitable square, a farming area or against a highway, needs and deserves the support of the entire movement, here and everywhere. Because each and every one of these struggles is the same: the struggle for a dignified life.

We articulate ourselves by recognizing ourselves as multiple and diverse, intersectional, but with a common objective, and from the complicity and absolute commitment of knowing ourselves on the same front.

But we are not satisfied with just confrontation. We reappropriate what is common, which belongs to all of us and to no one. We inhabit the land that we are and defend.

To inhabit is to root the space from relationships not mediated by the market;

We grow different community forms in a world of isolation; we reconnect with each other and with the land from a place of cooperation and independencia.

It is an ivy of links woven outside of any productivist logic.

It is resuming the illusion with our hands grafted onto the territory, trying to water with autonomous care the diversity of life forms.

To inhabit is the force of the current of a river with two sides: initiatives outside the tentacles of the system and the sovereignty that these generate, essential to take charge of our lives and confront capitalist dispossession.

Our action can occur in any territory where organized resistance opposes the ecocidal threat.

In complicity with this resistance we weave diverse and complementary strategies: research and denunciation, occupations, organization of meeting spaces, physical blockades, dismantling; as well as the creation of popular infrastructures, both of resistance and of alternative to developmentalism, working to generate a rearguard of care that guarantees the well-being of all and the participation of groups that are too often undervalued.

We are committed to recovering the land by building autonomy to take care of our vital needs.

From the fight against tourism in Mallorca in the wind farms of Castellón, through to the MAT of Girona and the Pyrenees that stops the Olympic Games or the golf courses of the Marina Alta.

We fight in Ponent against the macro farms, in the Camp de Tarragona against energy extractivism and the condemnation to be a sacrifice zone.

Diverse territories that share a history, a tradition of struggle and a language. We do it here knowing that we are part of and in solidarity with the struggles everywhere.

Let us reappropriate the present and build our future together. Re-inhabit our ways of thinking, fighting and being everything with what sustains life: from that we make our horizon of shared hope.

The situation requires action now, here and now.
We are Revolts of the Earth
We are the Earth that revolts.
