Conversation with Anarchist Prisoner and Author, Bima
Bima is an anarchist writer, translator, and independent researcher from Indonesia

Bima has been imprisoned since 2021. He remains active behind bars as a member of an anarchist federation.

He is also the founder of the do-it-yourself publishing house called Pustaka Catut, and author of the book Anarchy in Alifuru: The History of Stateless Societies in the Maluku Islands published by Minor Compositions.

On May 23, anarchist Ruslan Sidiki was sentenced to a record-breaking 29 years in prison.

He received this sentence for two acts of sabotage against military infrastructure: blowing up a railway track and carrying out a drone attack on an airfield. No one was hurt.

Ruslan carefully planned the actions to avoid casualties. As a result of the airfield attack, the runway was damaged, and the controlled explosion on the railway tracks caused the derailment of 19 freight train wagons.

Despite the absence of any casualties, Ruslan was sentenced to 29 years in prison!

This is unthinkable in a country where murder usually carries a sentence of around 10 years.

Under such conditions, there’s no hope for justice—but Ruslan is an Italian citizen, so there is a chance for a prisoner exchange.

Ruslan’s lawyer also filed a petition to have him recognized as a prisoner of war (under the Geneva Conventions,.members of resistance movements can also be granted POW status), to increase the chances of such an exchange.
When Ruslan was detained, he was brutally tortured (source), and later threatened with more torture.

That is yet another reason why we believe it is essential to provide him with legal support.

We are raising 210,000 rubles to pay for a lawyer’s work for three months.

This includes filing an appeal, visiting Ruslan, and other necessary legal actions.

Malatesta: Joyful Warrior of Pragmatic Anarchism

Errico Malatesta was an Italian anarchist propagandist, theorist and revolutionary socialist. He edited several radical newspapers and spent much of his life exiled and imprisoned, having been jailed and expelled from Italy, Britain, France, and Switzerland. Wikipedia

Errico Malatesta’s anarchism can be described as “pragmatic” because he emphasized practical, realistic approaches to achieving anarchist goals, including working within existing labor organizations to transform them into tools for attack, agitating from outside and against government, and recognizing the long-term nature of societal transformation.

His focus was not just on an ultimate stateless society but on the continuous struggle to empower the people and reduce government’s harmful power, a commitment evident in his sustained activism and editing of anarchist publications.

Key Aspects of Malatesta’s Pragmatic Anarchism:

Engagement with Existing Organizations:
Malatesta advocated for anarchists to remain within organizations like trade unions, not to gain power, but to push them towards revolutionary goals and transform them from defensive to offensive tools.

Anti-Government Agitation:

He stressed that anarchists must always operate from outside and against government, using street agitation to pressure authorities and achieve demands, rather than seeking legislative positions.

Focus on the People:

A core tenet of his pragmatism was to always be with the people, encouraging them to demand more, to understand their own power, and to reject any form of government or authority.

Propaganda by the Deed

Errico was a leading advocate of “propaganda of the deed,” the doctrine urged largely by Italian anarchists that revolutionary ideas could best be spread by armed insurrection, and joined a successful farmers uprising when still a teenager.
