“The protesters are demonstrating against social unrest, as well as against the system itself. As with most demonstrations seen across Europe in recent days, the common threads are housing prices, the cost of living, education, and the perception that governments are failing to address everyday problems.”

“The Mossos (regional police) note that the demonstration is unauthorized, as no prior notification was provided.”

Protests inspired by movements in Europe, leave over 100 people arrested.
The first incidents were recorded during the afternoon, and the tension escalated.
“The events began this Saturday evening, while shops were still open. Waste containers and other street furniture were set on fire around Plaça Catalunya. The disturbances left motorcycles toppled on the ground, and several establishments were looted. Amidst the police presence, participants—some of whom were hooded—could be seen running through the area.”
“Looting and fires in the heart of Barcelona: Mossos intervene during a night of unrest“
“Burning trash containers, motorcycles toppled on the ground, shattered storefronts, and people running through the streets—these are some of the scenes left in the wake of the serious unrest that took place this Saturday night in the center of Barcelona, particularly around Plaça de Catalunya.
“What began as a gathering of a few dozen young people escalated i¡in the busiest areas of the Catalan capital. Participants—many of them hooded—threw stones, set fire to trash containers and other street furniture, and looted a few commercial establishments.

El Corte Inglés, the major rightwing department store chain, closed its doors with hundreds of customers still inside
“Barcelona city center—streets are blocked off, and there are many police vans. El Corte Inglés has closed its doors and evacuated people through emergency exits.
Massive Police Operation unleashed
“The Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan police) deployed a large-scale operation to bring the unrest under control, supported by the Barcelona City Police (Guardia Urbana), who closed off vehicle traffic on several streets surrounding Plaça de Catalunya.
“The police intervention was hampered by the movements of the participants, who scattered into small groups and ran through various parts of the area.

This fragmentation complicated the task for the cops, who were forced to respond in multiple locations while objects continued to be thrown and incidents persisted.
“The Apple Store in the same square also pulled down its shutters as the incidents escalated. Other shops chose to halt operations and reinforce their storefronts with protective panels to prevent potential damage.”

“Looting and damage to commercial establishments have been among the consequences of the unrest. On Ronda de la Universitat, very close to Plaça de Catalunya, a group of individuals caused damage to a PC Componentes electronics store.
“This damage adds to the list of incidents, which includes charred waste containers, items set on fire in the streets, and motorcycles left lying on the ground. All of this has created a scene of intense tension in the center of Barcelona, with shops boarded up, streets closed to traffic, and a police force deployed to contain the various pockets of unrest that have emerged throughout the evening.”

“By past ten o’clock at night, the tension had subsided, though incidents continued to occur and a police presence remained in the area. By 10:00 p.m., the 112 emergency line had received 450 calls related to the disturbances.”
