North pole webcams fall over as ice melts

Live from the North Pole!

The Arctic lost sea ice very rapidly in the first half of July. Ice loss slowed in late July-early August, but resumed again later in August. Web cam 1 has tipped but not fallen over completely, as you can see in the images.

Web cam 2 fell over on July 23 in the melted snow and ice, and now views only the sky.

Watch the rapid melt in the YouTube video.

Arctic sea ice is at the crossroads
National Snow and Ice Data CenterAugust 22, 2011

The National Snow and Ice Data Center reports that the average Arctic sea ice extent for July 2011 was the lowest for July in the satellite data record. Ice loss slowed in late July-early August, but Arctic sea ice continues to become thinner and is now declining at a brisk pace.

Further Arctic sea ice loss during the last month of the summer ice-melt season will depend mostly on weather patterns.

With 21 contributors, the August Arctic Sea Ice Outlook projects a September 2011 pan-arctic sea extent median value of 4.6 million square kilometers, below all values seen prior to 2007.

Vengeful hurricane Irene attacks rich, spares Haiti.

Hurricane Irene attacks the rich

Vengeful Irene attacks US East Coast

After destroying the 64m$ Mansion on the private island of  Climate Criminal Sir Richard Branson, the ‘green’ owner of Virgin Airlines responsible for pumping billions of tons of CO2 into our atmosphere, hurricane IRENE dipped north to save the hundreds of thousands of still destitute tent and shack dwellers of Haiti, and headed for the USA, home of Climate Denier Syndrome and planet wasting corporations.

The U.S. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting that hurricane Irene is going to strafe pretty much every inch of the most densely populated part of America, i.e. the East Coast.

So if you live anywhere from the Carolinas to Boston, is it time to panic? It would be, if panicking actually helped!

US opinion rejecting Climate deniers?

climate deniers losing ground

This week, sure feels like the tipping point on public opinion on climate, and so I’m going to stick a fork in it right here, folks. Climate opinion just tipped. Why do I say that? In the last week:

Australia, with huge coal reserves — but rapidly passing the Arctic as ground zero for climate impacts with epic fires, droughts, floods, hurricanes, and dust storms — passed a carbon credit law, with a tax coming up next.

Canada rolled out regulations that will likely phase out coal by mid-century.

Michael Mann’s “hockey stick” research was once and for all vindicated.

Prominent Republicans like Jon Hunstman and Chris Christie agree that climate science is real, and there’s even pressure within the GOP to not become the anti-science party. In fact, when Rick Perry denied climate science, he wasn’t just censured by some Republicans, he was instantly and vigorously debunked by the Washington Post.

The press is finally doing its job by calling deniers like Rick Perry out on their climate claims

Amazing Amazon river dolphin

Pink, blue or albino, the Amazon river dolphin is the most distinctive of the five river dolphins. It has a ridge along its back rather than a dorsal fin and its fat, heavy body is surprisingly flexible. Paddle-like flippers which move in a circular motion provide exceptional manoeuvrability, making up for a lack of speed. The Amazon and Orinoco river basins provide all the food in its highly diverse diet, including at least 40 different species of fish. It relies on echolocation to find prey in the muddy waters. Males can reach two and a half metres in length, making them the largest of the river dolphins. This is unusual as in the other four species, the females are the larger sex. Amazon river dolphins have few natural predators, but caimans, anacondas and jaguars have been known to take them.

Scientific name: Inia geoffrensis
