June 11, 2011: International Day of Solidarity for Marie Mason and Eric McDavid!

Eric McDavid was arrested in January 2006 after being entrapped by a paid government informant – “Anna” – and was charged with a single count of conspiracy. Eric – who never carried out any actions and was accused of what amounts to “thought crime” – refused to cooperate with the state and took his case to trial. After a trial fraught with errors, the jury convicted Eric. He was subsequently sentenced to almost 20 years in prison. More information on Eric’s case can be found at http://supportmariemason.org/2011/04/07/june11-2011

Marie Mason was arrested in March 2008 after her former partner – Frank Ambrose – turned informant for the FBI. Facing a life sentence if she went to trial, Marie accepted a plea bargain in September 2008, admitting her involvement in the burning of an office connected to GMO research and the destruction of a piece of logging equipment. At her sentencing in February the following year, she received a sentence of almost 22 years. More information on Marie’s case can be found at http://supporteric.org/updates.htm

Reports of Massive Glacier Melting Pour In

burn climate criminals

by Daniel Kessler

The voices for climate action come from everywhere. This weekend both the Dalai Lama, at a speech in India, and scientists publishing a paper in Nature, brought the world’s attention to the melting of the earth’s glaciers, a reality that is dramatically changing landscapes and threatening millions who depend on glaciers for fresh water…..

In India, the Dalai Lama, at the centenary celebrations of India’s former President R. Venkataraman, said that “since millions of Indians use water coming from the Himalayan glacier, so you have certain right to show your concern about ecology of that plateau.”———-   /cont

Risk of drying in the Amazon Basin: NASA Satellites Detect Extensive Drought Impact on Amazon Forests

CLIMATE CHANGE
“Act of Conscience” Could Earn 10-Year Prison Term
By Cléo Fatoorehchi

NEW YORK, Mar 24, 2011 (IPS) – A college student who derailed a federal auction of oil and gas leases to protest drilling near national parks in the western U.S. state of Utah, as well as the larger issue of reliance on fossil fuels, has reignited debate over the legitimacy of civil disobedience in addressing profound global problems like climate change.

In December 2008, the twilight of the George W. Bush administration, Tim DeChristopher attended the auction, held by the Bureau of Land Management, and bid 1.8 million dollars on parcels he never intended to actually buy. BLM agents caught on to the ruse fairly quickly, and DeChristopher was detained and then charged with making a false statement to the government and violating the Federal Onshore Oil and Gas Leasing Reform………….

Wind Turbines Survive Earthquake

It’d be very difficult to exaggerate the scale of damage caused by the Japanese trifecta disaster of earthquake-tsunami-nuclear power plant crisis, but in the middle of it all there’s one small bright spot: Japan’s wind turbines have survived it all unscathed, with operators being asked to step up operations where possible to help with electricity shortfalls.

Oil Still Leaking from Deepwater Horizon

While the media is busy assuring their audiences that we still need nuclear energy despite catastrophic accidents potential, environmentalists would like you to remember we still have issues in the Gulf of Mexico from another one of our short-sighted energy policies.

The Coast Guard is investigating reports of a potentially large oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico not far from the Deepwater Horizon site. According to a knowledgeable source, the slick was sighted by a helicopter pilot on Friday and is about 100 miles long. A fishing boat captain said he went through the slick yesterday and it was strong enough to make his eyes burn.
