The director general of hospitals in Gaza warns the lives of hundreds of patients are at risk because of the catastrophic situation at al-Shifa Hospital.
Palestinian Minister of Health Mai al-Kaila says Israeli forces “are not evacuating people from hospitals; instead they are forcibly evicting the wounded onto the streets, leaving them to face inevitable death”.
Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital has been caught in Israel’s ground offensive and health officials say its cardiac ward has been destroyed.
More than 11,100 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. In Israel, after a downward revision, the death toll now stands at more than 1,200.
At least 192 medical staff have been killed according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza. Of them, at least 16 medical staff were killed on duty, according to the World Health Organization.
More than half of Gaza’s hospitals and nearly two-thirds of primary healthcare centres are now out of service and 53 ambulances damaged.

US and European officials have started quietly conferring with Ukraine on potential concessions that could bring the war to an end
With the world’s attention squarely fixed on the Israel-Gaza war — while baseless hope for a Ukrainian expulsion of the Russian army has evaporated — , NBC News was first to report Friday evening.
These discussions aren’t about a new counteroffensive — they’re about what concessions Ukraine could live with pursuant to a peace agreement. Some of the conversations, which officials describe as delicate, happened during an October meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, an affiliation of more than 50 governments siding with Ukraine.
In eyebrow-raising comments to the The Economist this week, Ukraine’s top commanderadmitted there will be no breakthrough and the battlefield situation is in a stalemate. The New York Times characterized his remarks as “the first time a top Ukrainian commander said the fighting had reached an impasse.”
In September, the Times itself splashed cold water on anyone who still believed Ukraine had any hope of pushing the Russian army out of eastern and southeastern Ukraine, much less Crimea. Its detailed analysis found that, in the wake of a Ukrainian counteroffensive, “Russia now controls nearly 200 square miles more territory in Ukraine compared with the start of the year.”
ISW‘s assessed control of terrain in Ukraine as of November 3 2023
Russia’s territorial gains are close to matching the goals President Vladimir Putin outlined at the start of what he calls a “special military operation.” He said Russia sought to secure Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts (provinces), which he recognized as republics shortly before the invasion. Russian forces now control nearly all of those areas, which are together called the Donbas.
Russia also controls most of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts, giving Russia a land bridge to the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014 after a Western-aided overthrow of a democratically elected president and the installation of an anti-Russia government in Kiev. Crimea and the eastern provinces of Ukraine have heavily ethnic-Russian populations.
The front lines have moved little in recent months. In anticipation of Ukraine’s highly-hyped 2023 counteroffensive, Russia was content to install formidable defensive fortifications and allow the Ukrainian army to degrade itself and achieve nothing.
In its match-up with a far larger country, Ukraine’s ability to refresh its military ranks is vanishing fast. “Manpower is at the top of the administration’s concerns right now,” an official told NBC.

The innocent boy died unexpectedly after suffering cardiac arrest in the bathtub. Once his heart stopped, he slipped under the water and drowned. After being rushed to Hadassah Medical Center in Mount Scopus, Jerusalem, he was kept on life support for two days.
However, the damage to his heart was so severe that not even the best medical care could revive him.
He was pronounced dead on Sept. 28. His grandfather, Dr. Mati Erlichman, is a respected doctor in Beit El in the West Bank. The family, devastated by their loss, issued a statement:
“On the eve of Yom Kippur, Yonatan went into cardiac arrest in our home, and since then we have struggled by his side after he collapsed. With love, we thank all those dear to us, who were by our side during the last days of his life.”
The US Treasury market, essential to the functioning of the global financial system, is hopelessly and inevitably falling apart.
There is a mantra that has essentially become axiomatic: the US Treasury market is the deepest and most liquid in the world. And a corollary to that is: US Treasury bonds are ‘risk free.’
These once-taken-for-granted pillars of eternal truth are looking awfully shaky. The tectonic plates of the US-led global financial system have been rustling ever more frequently in recent years but the quivers are now coming more frequently.
At the heart of this increasingly brittle and dysfunctional system is the US Treasury market.
Everyone has noticed the sharp rise in yields in recent months. In early October, the US 10y hit a yield of nearly 5%, the highest level in 16 years. This is, of course, entirely understandable: rate hikes by the Federal Reserve have pushed bond yields higher. But what we have been seeing is more than a manifestation of the vicissitudes of finicky markets.
As foreign buyers of US Treasuries dry up and the US government continues to run astronomical deficits at a time of high interest rates, the Treasury market is coming under increasing strain and showing ever more signs of dysfunction. The implications of this are hard to overstate.
Where have all the foreigners gone?
There was a time when Treasuries were essentially the US’ biggest export and served as the mechanism for the sort of macro-level vendor financing scheme under which the US imported goods and energy from the rest of the world in exchange for dollars – and these dollars were dutifully recycled back into Treasuries to finance the US deficit.
When deficits began to surge in the 1980s under President Ronald Reagan, many wondered how they would be financed. But starting in the middle of that decade, foreign central banks – primarily the Japanese – swooped in and started scooping up larger amounts of US Treasuries.
Over 1986-2002, foreign central banks bought 28-30% of all aggregate US Treasury bonds issued; from 2002-2014, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) had become the main buyer and the foreign purchases figure reached a whopping 53%.

Indonesian activists are calling for a total official boycott of what they call pro-Israeli products in a humanitarian gesture to pressure Israel to stop hostilities in Gaza, Republik media outlet reported on Thursday.
The call for a ban was initiated by human rights organizations and activists in Indonesia and Malaysia. It is also being supported by multiple political parties, the outlet said.
Companies on the blacklist with alleged ties to Israel include prominent brands such as Coca-Cola, Starbucks, McDonald’s, KFC, Nestle, and IBM.
“We in the House of Representatives encourage this boycott movement of Israeli products to become the official stance of the Indonesian government to be followed by all businesses and society,” a member of the country’s parliament, Amin Ak, told Republika on Wednesday.
Supporters of the boycott are calling for people to stop consuming “Israel-related” goods in favor of local ones.
“That would be a good moment to strengthen the tightening of the flow of imported goods, especially imports of some products,” said a senior official at the Indonesian Industry Ministry, Putu Juli Ardika.
According to local media reports, international fast-food chains such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Burger King, as well as ride-hailing firm Grab, have already noticed a drop in customers and profits.

US President Joe Biden, ‘Genocide Joe’, has ruled out any hope of achieving a lasting ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.“None. No possibility,” Biden told reporters outside the White House on Thursday 9th Nov when asked about the chances of a firm cessation in hostilities.
Earlier this week, Türkiye’s parliament removed Coca-Cola and Nestle products from its restaurants over their alleged support for Israel, according to a parliament statement.
“It was decided that the products of companies that support Israel will not be sold in restaurants, cafeterias and tea houses in the parliament campus,” it read.
The decision was taken by the speaker of the parliament, Numan Kurtulmus. According to a Turkish parliamentary source, Coca-Cola beverages and Nestle instant coffee were the only brands removed from the menu.
