ZAD, Bure, Hambach Forest: Networks of Resistance Part 1

Greece: Networks of Resistance Conference Part 1 – ZAD, Bure, Hambach Forest

Athens, Greece   from unicorn riot, with thanks.         – In the summer of 2017, folks in Athens organized the Networks of Resistance: 1st European Local Struggles Conference to “create an open source platform” to expand upon and share the experiences, knowledge, and ideas that have arisen from organically created resistance encampments currently building new alternatives outside of capitalism and nation-states.

The two-day conference was held in the self-organized Embros Theater, which is a squatted ex-factory in the Psiri District of Athens.

Navigating through the dynamics of building strong grassroots movements that impact radical change is a arduous task. The resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) in the United States was monumental, but it didn’t stop the project nor the flow of oil. In Europe, resistance to development and fossil fuel extraction projects continues to grow in waves, similar to the USA, and like the resistance camps around Standing Rock, autonomous experiments of building an alternative society outside of capitalism and void of consumerism and hierarchy have existed for years now. Bring a Walking Stick: New festival to Defend Free Area in France: Oct 8th

defendzad8oct2016Notre-Dame-des-Landes (France): Defend the ZAD – a Call for International Solidarity

For over 50 years, farmers and locals have resisted the building of a new airport for the French city of Nantes (which by the way already has one). Now in these rich fields, forests and wetlands, which multinational Vinci want to cover in concrete, an experiment in reinventing everyday life in struggle is blossoming.images

Radicals from around the world, local farmers and villagers, citizen groups, trade unionists and naturalists, refugees and runaways, squatters and climate justice activists and many others, are organising to protect the 4000 acres of land against the airport and its world.

Government officials have coined this place “a territory lost to the republic”. Its occupants have named it: la ZAD  (Zone À Défendre), zone to defend. Continue reading “Bring a Walking Stick: New festival to Defend Free Area in France: Oct 8th”

New Autonomous Zone Declared by ZAD NDDL in Solidarity with Kurdistan

http://zad.nadir.org/spip.php?article31   Sept 26, 2015, by zadist. Translated by TheFree. In French below.

Autonomy at ZAD NDDL
Autonomy at ZAD NDDL

The ZAD declares itself “autonomous”, as did some municipalities in northern Kurdistan (Turkey) in response to the war declared by the Turkish government. These towns are already experiencing some degree of self-management, self-governance, autonomy so. Faced with fierce attacks against civilians by special forces police and army, several neighborhood assemblies have decided to declare themselves autonomous, deny the legitimacy of the state and its repressive forces.

Kurdish cities like Cizre have declared Autonomy from Turkey, following the Municipal Anarchist blueprint of their imprisoned leader,Ocalan, and called for solidarity uprisings elsewhere.

Declaration of Autonomous Zone of the ZAD NDDL in response to the call of the KCK (Kurdistan Communities Confederation)

To those who resist in Kurdistan

We follow what is happening in Turkey. We express our support against the offensive of the Turkish state. Continue reading “New Autonomous Zone Declared by ZAD NDDL in Solidarity with Kurdistan”

ZAD: anti-airport Occupation a battle for France’s future

How an anti-airport occupation became a battle for France’s future

Emilie Papillon reports from the ZAD – an occupation of the site of a proposed airport that has turned into something more

The anti airport movement proposes an anti-capitalist assembly based revolution

After avoiding the police checkpoints, heading down road D42 and passing multiple barricades made out of wood, tires, hay bales and anything else burnable, you will eventually find yourself staring at a hand-painted sign: ‘welcome to the ZAD’. Preface:

This update should have been posted weeks ago. But the turn of events meant that we had little time to sit, write and reflect. Words may well be weapons, but in the heat of struggle bodies speak louder than words.

Saturday, November 17th – Day of Reoccupation.

A yellow forklift truck leads the way; walking close behind is a block of Zadists carrying a fortified banner declaring: No to the airport and its world.  Behind them 20 tractors pull huge agricultural trailers filled with building materials: piles of pallets, straw bales, tyres, doors, windows, prefabricated wooden walls, hundreds of planks, corrugated iron roofing, tools – pretty much anything you can think of, including kitchen sinks.
