President Mahinda Rajapaksa has banned the import of all weedicides containing ‘Glyphosate’ with immediate effect as the chemical cocktail commonly known as roundup has been found to be the main cause of chronic kidney disease.
Senior Lecturer of the Rajarata University Medical Faculty Dr. Channa Jayasumana told The Island, quoting Special Projects Minister S. M. Chandrasena that President Rajapaksa ordered the ban.
Dr. Jayasumana said that his research team had met Special Projects Minister Chandrasena and apprised him on their findings. Thereafter the minister had met President Rajapaksa at a meeting where the harmful effects of glyphosate were discussed.
The research team was grateful to President Rajapaksa for taking a bold decision to ban glyphosate in Sri Lanka.
