Greece: Anarchist Refugee Collectives Displace state Detention Centres

CYcBghwWAAEdOr6

While the world’s media is suitably distracted by the Olympic Games in Brazil, the war in Syria and beyond continues to see thousands of people – men, women and children – killed each week and many more attempting the perilous journey as refugees to seek safety.

Meanwhile in the last two months there has been a deafening silence in the media about the plight of the thousands of refugees still stuck in Greece. Only 2500 refugees have so far been granted asylum status – the process is excruciatingly slow and most of those granted this status have yet to be relocated.

A report by the Greek Centre for Disease Control recommended all 16 of the refugee detention centres it inspected be closed due to unsanitary conditions and poor water supply. But while the Greek authorities seem unable to move forward, grassroots activists – anarchists – have yet again taken matters into their own hands and are providing shelter and food to those in need. However, this is not charity, or the result of a philanthropic endeavour, but direct democracy in practice.cbglyagumaas_qq

Anarchists in Greece have been providing squatted accommodation – abandoned schools, hotels etc – for refugees – since the current conflicts in Syria began. And as soon as the Greek authorities organised evictions of these premises, more buildings have been squatted. MEKONG MADNESS: STOP DAMS KILLING THE LARGEST INLAND FISHERIES

India_Dam_Protest_247444

Investigative reporter, TOM FAWTHROP has just returned from the site of the Don Sahong – a hydrodam being constructed in the middle of an eco-paradise of wetlands in Southern Laos where over 200 fish species have been recorded.

Increasingly the Mekong has become an arena of unilateral ‘water grabbing’ for the sole purpose of hydro-dam construction by China and Lao, with scant regard for good governance in water sharing or for the protection of the rich biodiversity.

The Four Thousands Islands (Sipangdon) in southern Laos, has long beguiled explorers tourists and locals with its vast number of islets, spectacular waterfalls and 26 major islands. Over a stretch of 50 kms the mighty Mekong River splits into seven major braided channels. This pristine area of precious wetlands screamed out for international protection as provided for under the Ramsar Convention, a protection that has been embraced by Cambodia just two kilometres away across the border.untitled_image_1_452456

But the Lao authoritarian state opted for a hydropower dam, rather than Ramsar protection for endangered dolphins, the abundant fisheries and one of the region’s most cherished waterscapes. Continue reading “MEKONG MADNESS: STOP DAMS KILLING THE LARGEST INLAND FISHERIES”

Banning The Anarchists: a “Structural Nuisance” in Netherlands

The Netherlands: Mayor issues area bans for anarchists

netherlands

Today (3-8-2016) several anarchists in the city of The Hague, The Netherlands, but also in other cities, received police visits. The police delivered letters containing the intentions of mayor Jozias van Aartsen to prohibit anarchists from setting foot in the Schilderswijk neighbourhood in The Hague for the coming two months.cropped-websitebanner14

The letters stated that the anarchists were to blame for “structural nuisance”. This nuisance would consist of unannounced demonstrations, disturbing of the peace and the disturbing of demonstrations. The letters contain a list of allegations to which people are being associated to or for which they have been arrested.

These allegations differ per person. They range from squatting, participation in spontaneous demonstrations, pasting posters and destroying a prison fence. Continue reading “Banning The Anarchists: a “Structural Nuisance” in Netherlands”

Drown in a Downpour of LIES.. War against All Puerto Ricans

Orwell in Puerto Rico

Welcome to Puerto Rico: where everyone is a sucker, and the US government treats every man and woman – regardless of age and education – like a five-year old idiot.

The lies from El Norte pour down every day.

A whopper will come from the Federal Reserve Bank on August 8.

A HISTORY OF LIES

  • In 1898, Gen. Nelson Miles announced that the US would “protect your property, promote your prosperity, and bestow the blessings of enlightened civilization.”

Then within a few years, the US owned 80% of Puerto Rico’s farm land…plus all its banks, railroads, public utilities, steamship lines, and the San Juan international seaport.e5e09-macheteros2bno2bterroristas1

  • In March 1917, Puerto Ricans were declared “US citizens.”

Then one month later, 18,000 Puerto Ricans were drafted into World War I.

From 1917 until 1976, Puerto Ricans were denied the federal minimum wage.

In 1948, the Ley de la Mordaza eliminated the first amendment.

From 1936 to 1992, over 100,000 “U.S. citizens” had secret FBI files opened on them.

To this very day, Puerto Ricans “citizens” cannot vote for congressmen, senators, or the president of the US.
