Direct action blocks eviction in Sheffield!

nothingiseverlost's avatarCautiously pessimistic

This week, members of the tenants’ union ACORN took to the streets in Sheffield to prevent a landlord from carrying out an eviction, as reported in Evolve Politics and the Sheffield Star. They have now entered into negotiations with the landlord, and will be meeting for talks next week. An ACORN co-ordinator said:

“I know from experience that living in privately rented housing is precarious at the best of times and the possibility of eviction reminds us that we are not in control of our homes or our lives. But when renters unionise, we can say no to evictions, which is especially important when evictions are illegal and will leave families homeless, like in this case. That’s something we can’t do as individuals… Not only will our action help stop a family from becoming homeless, it will send a message to rogue landlords in Sheffield that they have…

Exposed: Tsunami of Blatant Lies by Western Media on Venezuela

What Mainstream Media Got Wrong About Venezuela’s Constituent Assembly Vote

teleSUR | July 30, 2017  (pics from http://drdawgsblawg.ca/ )               Venezuelans voted Sunday for representatives of the National Constituent Assembly, amid what the government has called a targeted media campaign to destabilize the country and destroy its sovereignty.

camera vs gun.jpgThis one is so iconic! But CNN had to admit that the graphic photo was actually taken in Singapore:

International media outlets rushed to discredit the vote, sharing grossly misrepresentative accounts of the historic electoral process.

The U.S. newspaper Washington Post, for instance, wrote “the decision to hold the vote appeared set to prolong and deepen the suffering of the people of Venezuela” — despite assurances from Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro that the purpose of the election was to ease economic and political conflicts with the opposition.

The Washington Post also insisted the nation’s 2.8 million state workers “risked losing their jobs if they did not vote.” Continue reading “Exposed: Tsunami of Blatant Lies by Western Media on Venezuela”

The Hamburg G20 Riot was a Milestone and an Inspiration.. says Greek Anarchist Prisoner Panagiotis

Greece: Message from CCF-FAI/IRF member Panagiotis Argyrou in Response to the Solidarity Call for No-G20 Prisoners.

A response to the call for solidarity to the ones held in custody in Hamburg

During the exile of captivity few are the things that can make you smile, offer a warm thought or a pleasant feeling. I can, however, say with some certainty that these days of July when Hamburg surrendered to the chaos of riots during the G20 summit, the clashes with the police, the burning barricades, the store looting, the vandalism and burning of sovereignty targets, my thoughts were boosted, a great deal of “thank yous” as well as vivid emotions overwhelmed me, and a smile lit up my face.

I’ll be honest, however. Although from an early stage a large part of insurrectionary anarchism aspired at setting a high target, something that had become clear already since the call for a militant campaign of informal organization months before the summit; and although there was a large number of public texts and claims of responsibility responding to this call (some comrades were kind enough to even mention the heritage of Black December), I wasn’t that sure that the days in question would indeed involve such great momentum. The Intergalactic Week of Zad: August 17th-24th: Amazingly Occupied since 2010

If you’re a French-speaker, or want a video impression of the Zad movement, try this from 2012:

Squats and camps sprung up on fields due for the rumble of the bulldozer in the early 2010s, and it came to be known as the Zone to Defend (zone à défendre, or Zad), inspiring dozens of other similar camps which have in some cases banded together into “back to the land” networks.

Next month will see a major gathering for the Zads in the form of a week-long camp at Nantes, the Intergalactic Week of Zad, building resources and establishing links between the disparate groups.

Organisers said the programme would be relatively open with a few broad themes, and would offer ample opportunity to learn and work on DIY projects:

Mornings will be dedicated to collective working opportunities, including the building of Ambazada, the Intergalactic cabin as well as collective work on various sites of the Zad (e.g., barn construction, carpentry, helping with collective crops, fence maintenance, collecting wood for the bakery, basket making…). Participants are asked to bring a tent, sleeping bag and a leash if you have a dog.

Running from August 17th-24th, logistics for the week only allow for 300 or so people, so interested campers should contact exclaimthezad@riseup.net ahead of time. Continue reading “The Intergalactic Week of Zad: August 17th-24th: Amazingly Occupied since 2010”
