‘Ágora Juan Andrés’ is an amazing self-run occupied area in the old Raval area where all kinds of activities take place. It’s been going since Oct 2014 and is named in memory of Juan Andres, a local man who was beaten to death by the police in the street.

On Wednesday, June 6, the occupied community site ‘Ágora Juan Andrés’ was notified of a claim by the company ‘Triquell y García SL’ against the “unknown occupants” of the plot requesting the eviction of the space and compensation of 20,000 Euros . We went to the Court nº 3 to defend ourselves against their accusations .
Surprisingly, the company is the same that lost the property in June 2007, having 3 pending mortgages as well as 2 procedures for seizure by the Public Treasury and the Town Hall of Barcelona. The site became the property of the SAREB bank but now Triquell y García SL is back as a claimant and owner.
In 2014 this space was a gap, a hole full of rats, trash, syringes and dirt, without the speculative company, its owner, doing anything to keep it in acceptable hygienic conditions, ignoring local complaints . Maybe they were waiting for a better time for the hotel they planned to build.
In October 2013, Juan Andrés Benítez, was killed by the Mossos Police in the same Aurora Street, he could have been any one of our neighbors. The neighborhood went out to express its anger, its impotence and the need for justice. And the occupation of the Ágora site was held on October 5, 2014, the first anniversary of his death and as an act within the Campaign for Justice for Juan Andrés.
The neighborhood was very happy with the occupation as it conditioned, cleaned and fixed the space. Since then and to this day, we have continued to work to improve it. So far there has been no denunciation by any institution, company or individual. And it has been turning into a real lung for the neighborhood, given the obvious lack of green spaces.
In the face of the problems we experience in the neighborhood of the Raval on a daily basis: overcrowding, dirt, speculation, poverty, loneliness, evictions, drugshop flats, tourist pressure, overcrowding of houses, expulsion of neighbors, insecurity, etc. Àgora Juan Andrés is a safe, green, pleasant, accessible area, open to the neighbors as well as to any person who agrees with it. It makes no difference between races or religious confessions, it’s plural, not admitting sexism or homophobia, and it’s autonomous and self-managed.
At Ágora, mutual support, socialization and meeting of the neighborhood are promoted, and we pay attention and support their demands.
We are proud that this space has become a renowned in the city for the celebration of events, as a platform for social struggles; it has been used for festive celebrations, to host plays, puppet shows, workshops, musical and poetic performances, as well as for showing films and documentaries. Here marginalized or stigmatized collectives are welcomed and use the space according to their needs.
El Raval Barrio needs green spaces
With the current city council, we tried to ensure public ownership of the space, which we understood was in the hands of the SAREB. And as far as we know, it was not possible to reach an agreement for the economic demands that demanded and that prevented the purchase, exchange or transfer of space.
That’s how things stood, until the eviction order arrived. We don’t know how the property has returned to the company Triquell y García SL, that wants us to be thrown out and to pay compensation, eliminating a green and living space in the Raval barrio, and using it for the fierce real estate speculation that is destroying the neighborhood.
We’re upset about this, that those responsible for abandoning the space, without caring about public health or the lives of the people, are speculating with a property that should be passed to public hands.
And we will not allow it. The ÀGORA IS REMAINING IN THE BARRIO and we will fight to make it so, so that it does not stop being a public space, green and self-managed at the service of people and the struggles of the neighborhood and the city.

¡EL ÀGORA SE QUEDA EN EL BARRIO!
El miércoles 6 de junio llegó al Ágora Juan Andrés la notificación de una demanda por parte de la empresa Triquell y García SL contra los “ignorados ocupantes” del solar pidiendo el desalojo del espacio y una indemnización de 20.000 Euros. Nos personamos en el juzgado de primera instancia nº 3 para poder defendernos de las acusaciones que se nos hacen.
Sorprende que la empresa que nos demanda y aparece como propietaria del espacio, lo fue desde junio de 2007, teniendo posteriormente 3 hipotecas pendientes así como 2 procedimientos de embargo por parte de la Hacienda pública y l’Ajuntament de Barcelona. Según teníamos entendido este solar pasó a ser propiedad de la SAREB pero ahora vuelve a aparecer la citada Triquell y García SL como demandante y propietaria.
En 2014 este espacio era un vacío, un agujero inmundo lleno de ratas, basura, jeringuillas y porquería, sin que la empresa especuladora, su propietaria, hiciera nada para mantenerlo en condiciones higiénicas aceptables, haciendo caso omiso a las quejas vecinales. Quizás esperaban mejores tiempos para el hotel que pensaban construir.
No es un espacio de referencia del barrio, es de toda la ciudad. Si deshaucian el #ÁgoraJuanAndrés nos tendrán a muchas en contra. Media ciudad. ¿Otro Can Vies?
Y como una cosa más de las que pasan en este barrio, en octubre del 2013 murió en la calle Aurora, a manos de los Mossos de Esquadra, Juan Andrés Benítez, aunque podríamos haber sido cualquiera de lxs vecinxs. El barrio salió a la calle para expresar su rabia, su impotencia y la necesidad de que se hiciera justicia. Y la ocupación del Ágora se realizó el 5 de octubre de 2014, primer aniversario de su muerte y como un acto dentro de la Campanya Justicia Juan Andrés.
El vecindario vio la acción con buenos ojos ya que se acondicionó, limpió y arregló el espacio. Desde entonces hasta hoy hemos seguido trabajando en mejorarlo. Hasta ahora no ha habido ninguna denuncia por parte de institución, empresa o particular. Y se ha ido convirtiendo en un verdadero pulmón para el barrio, ante la evidencia de la falta de espacios verdes.
Frente a los problemas que padecemos lxs vecinxs del Raval de manera cotidiana: hacinamiento, suciedad, especulación, pobreza, soledad, desahucios, narcopisos, presión turística, sobreocupación de viviendas, expulsión de vecinxs, inseguridad etc., el Ágora Juan Andrés Benítez es un recinto seguro, verde, agradable, accesible y abierto para vecinxs, así como a cualquier persona que se acerque al mismo.
No entiende de razas ni de confesiones religiosas, es plural, no admite el sexismo ni la homofobia, es autónomo y autogestionado.
En el Ágora se promueve el apoyo, la socialización y el encuentro entre el vecindario, y atendemos y nos hacemos eco de sus reivindicaciones. Nos sentimos orgullosxs de que este espacio se haya convertido en referente de la ciudad para celebración de actos, como plataforma de luchas sociales; ha sido usado para realizar celebraciones lúdicas, acoger obras de teatro, títeres, talleres, actuaciones musicales y poéticas, así como para el pase de películas y documentales. Aquí se sienten acogidos colectivos marginados o estigmatizados, que lo utilizan según sus necesidades.
Con el actual ayuntamiento hicimos gestiones para que intentara asegurar la propiedad pública del espacio, que entendíamos estaba en manos de la SAREB. Y por lo que sabemos no fue posible llegar a un acuerdo por las peticiones económicas que esta exigía y que imposibilitaban la compra, permuta o cesión del lugar.
Y en eso estábamos hasta que llega la demanda (aunque no sabemos de qué manera la propiedad ha vuelto a la empresa Triquell y García SL), que nos quiere echar y demandar económicamente, eliminando de paso un espacio verde y vivo del Raval, y utilizarlo para seguir practicando la feroz especulación inmobiliaria que está acabando con el barrio.
Y nos indigna que sea así, que los responsables de la dejadez del lugar, sin importarles ni la salud pública ni la vida de las personas, trafiquen con una propiedad que había pasado a manos públicas.
Y no vamos a permitirlo. EL ÁGORA SE QUEDA en el barrio y vamos a luchar para que así sea, para que no deje de ser un espacio público, verde y autogestionado al servicio de las personas y las luchas del barrio y de la ciudad.
¡Defendamos un espacio verde para el barrio!
