The Amnesty and ‘pact of forgetting’ that followed the Dictatorship in Spain was designed to create a new democracy. Passing over monstrous crimes to break the cycle of violence. But the catholic far right still has large control over the courts, army and police and inherits the stolen wealth of 40 years in absolute power. Now with a new fascist party rising and heavy police repression many see the ‘pact of forgetting’ to be a broken mistake, and Spain to be a papier-mâché democracy.

Exhumation in the vicinity of the Valdenoceda prison (Burgos), where ‘revenge victims’ were murdered during the Franco regime
In his time as the Spanish Minister of Commerce, Alberto Garzón was attacked from all sides for stating the obvious, that in Spain tourism is an industry with little added value and job insecurity.
The vice president, Pablo Iglesias,now resigning, has been pilloried for stating another obvious point, that in Spain there is a democratic abnormality.
His remark broke the taboo. The pact of forgetting. Speaking the obvious in Spain is a high-risk exercise.
Yet surely it is a democratic abnormality that the Spanish people were never consulted on the form of their State, especially when the former monarch, now fled, came to be head of the State by imposition of a fascist dictator ?
Surely it is a democratic abnormality that that the resigned and disgraced king, who fled the country to put distance from justice, is paid a Public Tribute for what supposedly he did forty years ago to preserve this ailing democracy, that has served to whitewash his criminal behavior. A Tribute directed and orchestrated by his own son who in turn has inherited the head of state from his father.
In France, a former president of the republic is investigated, tried and convicted, in Spain, a former head of state for similar crimes is allowed to flee with his booty…, and is honored.

The continued existence of tens of thousands of republican corpses from the fascist takeover in unexcavated mass graves says very little in favor of the quality and consistency of Spanish democracy. Nor does the ceremonial decoration of torturers from the dictatorship .
Democratic abnormality also refers to the fact that ;
*Justice is not the same, nor works in the same way for everyone and that in many cases it seems more like a joke than anything else;

Radical Solidarity. ACTIVISTS FROM pah VALLEKAS OCCUPY A BRANCH OF THE ‘BAD BANK’ WHICH WAS SET UP TO MANAGE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF EVICTED HOMES
*Freedom of expression is more persecuted and penalized comparatively than corruption cases;
*That education and health are increasingly in private hands with an evident deterioration of public education and health;

policing an anti corruption demo in Madrid
*That the wealth of the country in all its expressions is not subject to the general interest, the most palpable cases being that of energy companies in the hands of multinationals whose commercial interests are far from the aforementioned general interest;

*That the media, a basic pillar in a democracy, be owned by banks and multinationals.
*Democratic abnormality is that in a country in which non-denominationalism and secularism must govern in Public Administrations, a certain and highly subsidized religious confession is not only present in said administrations, but also uses them at will, being protected from the very head of state.
*In the same way, it may seem a democratic abnormality that whoever denounces it, having the possibility and the political and legal tools to avoid said abnormality, cannot or does not dare to undertake the pertinent reforms and only remains in the manifestation of it.
Spaniards, in many respects, like the protagonist of the film “The Truman Show”, live a papier-mâché democracy as a reality television where reality is controlled and can change as it suits the interests of the person who directs the show.
