The Afghan Women’s Mission has contacted RAWA – Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan – to address their needs at this urgent time. In this short Q&A with AWM Co-Director Sonali Kolhatkar, RAWA explains the unfolding situation on the ground as they see it.
Sonali Kolhatkar: For years RAWA spoke out against the American occupation and now that it is over, the Taliban are back. Could President Biden have withdrawn US forces in a way that would have left Afghanistan safer than it is today? Could he have done more to make sure the Taliban couldn’t seize power so quickly?
RAWA: In the last 20 years, one of our demands was an end to the US / NATO occupation and even better if they take their Islamic fundamentalists and technocrats with them and let our people decide their own destiny. This occupation only resulted in bloodshed, destruction, and chaos.
They made our country the most corrupt, unsafe, drug trafficker and dangerous place, especially for women.
From the beginning we were able to predict such an outcome. In the early days of the US occupation of Afghanistan, RAWA stated on October 11, 2001:
“The continuation of the US attacks and the increase in the number of innocent civilian victims not only gives an excuse to the Taliban, but will also lead to the empowerment of fundamentalist forces in the region and even in the world.”
The main reason we were against this occupation was its support for terrorism under the pretty banner of the “war on terror.”
From the early days when Northern Alliance looters and assassins returned to power in 2002 to the latest so-called peace talks, accords and agreements in Doha and the release of 5,000 terrorists from prisons in 2020/21, it was very obvious. that even the withdrawal will not have a good ending.
The Pentagon proves that none of the invasion or meddling theories ended safely.
All the imperialist powers invade countries for their own strategic, political and financial interests, but through lies and the powerful corporate media they try to hide their true motive and agenda.
It is a joke to say that values such as “women’s rights”, “democracy”, “nation building”, and so on. They were part of the US and NATO objectives in Afghanistan!
The United States was in Afghanistan to turn the region into instability and terrorism to surround rival powers, especially China and Russia, and undermine their economies through regional wars. But of course, the United States government did not want such a disastrous and shameful exit that it left behind so much commotion that they were forced to send troops again in 48 hours to control the airport and safely evacuate their diplomats and staff.
We believe that the United States left Afghanistan because of its own weaknesses and was not defeated by its creatures (the Taliban). There are two important reasons for this withdrawal.
The main reason is the multiple internal crisis of the American system which were seen in the weak response to the pandemic of Covid-19, the attack on the Capitol and the great protests of the American public in recent years. Policy makers were forced to withdraw troops to focus on burning domestic issues.
The second reason is that the war in Afghanistan was an exceptionally expensive war whose cost has run into the billions, all taken from taxpayers’ money. This affected the United States so financially that it had to leave Afghanistan.
The warmongering policies show that their goal was never to make Afghanistan safer, much less now that they are gone. Furthermore, they also knew that the withdrawal would be chaotic, but they went ahead and did it. Now Afghanistan is back in the spotlight because the Taliban are in power, but this has been the situation for the past 20 years and every day for hundreds of our people.
They were murdered and our country destroyed, only rarely reported in the media.
Sonali Kolhatkar: Taliban leaders say they will respect women’s rights as long as they comply with Islamic law. Some western media are painting this in a positive light. Didn’t the Taliban say the same thing 20 years ago? Do you think there is any change in their attitude towards human rights and women’s rights?
RAWA: The corporate media is only trying to put salt on the wounds of our devastated people; they should be ashamed of themselves for the way they try to sugarcoat the brutal Taliban. The Taliban spokesman stated that there is no difference between their 1996 ideology and the current one. And what they say about women’s rights are the exact phrases used during their previous dark rule: implementing Sharia law.
These days, the Taliban have declared an amnesty in all parts of Afghanistan and their motto is “what the joy of amnesty can bring, revenge cannot.”
But they are actually killing people every day. Just yesterday, a child was shot and killed in Nangarhar just for carrying the tricolor Afghan national flag instead of the white flag of the Taliban. Four former army officers were executed in Kandahar, a young Afghan poet Mehran Popal was arrested in Herat province for writing anti-Taliban posts on Facebook, and his family is unaware of his whereabouts. These are just a few examples of their violent actions despite the polite and “kind” words of their spokesperson.
But we think their claims may be one of the theaters the Taliban are playing and they are just trying to buy more time until they can organize. Things happened so fast and they are trying to build their government structure, create their intelligence and make the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, in charge of controlling the small details of people’s daily lives. like the duration of life. the beard, the dress code and having a Mahram (male partner, only father, brother or husband) per woman.
The Taliban claim that they are not against women’s rights, but that they should be within the framework of Islamic / Sharia law.
Islamic / Sharia law is vague and is interpreted by Islamic regimes in different ways to benefit their own political agendas and rules. Furthermore, the Taliban would also like to be recognized and taken seriously by the West, and all of these claims are part of painting a whitewashed picture for themselves.
Perhaps after a few months they would say that we will hold elections because we believe in justice and democracy! These claims will never change their true nature, and they will remain Islamic fundamentalists: misogynist, inhuman, barbarian, reactionary, undemocratic, and anti-progressive. In a word, the mentality of the Taliban has not changed and will never change!
Sonali Kolhatkar: Why did the Afghan National Army and the US-backed Afghan government collapse so quickly?
RAWA: Some of the main reasons among many are:
1) Everything was done in accordance with an agreement to hand over Afghanistan to the Taliban. The US government negotiating with Pakistan and other regional players reached an agreement to form a government. made up mainly of the Taliban.
So the soldiers were unwilling to die in a war when they knew there was no benefit to the Afghan people in it because it was finally settled behind closed doors to bring the Taliban to power. Zalmay Khalilzad is highly hated among the Afghan population due to his treacherous role in bringing the Taliban back to power.
2) Most Afghans understand well that the war that is being fought in Afghanistan is not the war of the Afghans and for the benefit of the country, but is being fought by foreign powers for their own strategic interests and the Afghans are only the fuels of war. Most of the youth are joining the forces due to extreme poverty and unemployment, so they have no commitment or morals to fight.
It is worth mentioning that the United States and the West have tried for 20 years to keep Afghanistan as a consuming country and have hindered the growth of the industry. This situation created a wave of unemployment and poverty, paving the way for the recruitment of the puppet government, the Taliban and the growth of opium production.
3) The Afghan forces were not so weak to be defeated within a week, but they were receiving orders from the presidential palace not to counterattack the Taliban and that they should surrender. Most of the provinces were peacefully handed over to the Taliban.
4) The puppet regime of Hamid Karzai and Ashraf Ghani called the Taliban “dissatisfied brothers” for years and released many of their most ruthless prison commanders and leaders. Asking Afghan soldiers to fight a force called not “enemy” but “brother” emboldened the Taliban and hit the morale of the Afghan armed forces.
5) The armed forces were plagued with unprecedented corruption. The sheer number of generals (mostly brutal former Northern Alliance warlords) sitting in Kabul took millions of dollars, even slashing food and wages for soldiers fighting on the front lines. “Ghost soldiers” was a phenomenon exposed by SIGAR. High-ranking officials were busy lining their pockets; they funneled the salary and ration of tens of thousands of non-existent soldiers into their own bank accounts.
6) Whenever the Taliban besieged the forces in hard fighting, Kabul ignored their call for help. In numerous cases, dozens of soldiers were massacred by the Taliban when they were left without ammunition or food for weeks. Therefore, the casualty rate among the armed forces was very high. At the World Economic Forum (Davos 2019), Ashraf Ghani confessed that since 2014 more than 45,000 Afghan security personnel have been killed, while in the same period only 72 US / NATO personnel were killed.
7) In general, in society, growing corruption, injustice, unemployment, insecurity, uncertainty, fraud, great poverty, drugs and smuggling, etc. they provided a ground for the resurgence of the Taliban.
Sonali Kolhatkar: What is the best way for Americans to help RAWA and the Afghan people and women right now?
RAWA: We feel very fortunate and happy to have had some freedom-loving American people with us all these years as well. We need Americans to speak out and protest against the warmongering policies of their government and support the strengthening of the struggle of the people in Afghanistan against these barbarians.
It is human nature to resist and history bears witness. We have the glorious examples of the American “Occupy Wall Street” and “Black Lives Matter” fighting movements.
We have seen that no level of oppression, tyranny and violence can stop the resistance. Women will no longer be chained! The next morning, after the entry of the Taliban into the capital, a group of our brave young women painted graffiti on the walls of Kabul with the slogan: Down with the Taliban!
Our women are now politically conscious and no longer want to live under the Burka, something they easily did 20 years ago. We will continue our struggles while finding smart ways to stay safe.
We believe that the inhumane military empire of the United States is not only the enemy of the Afghan people, but the greatest threat to world peace and instability. Now that the system is on the brink of decline, it is the duty of all peace loving, progressive, leftist and justice loving individuals and groups to step up their fight against brutal warmongers in the White House, the Pentagon and the UK. Capitol Hill.
Replacing the rotten system with a just and humane one will not only liberate millions of poor and oppressed Americans, it will have a lasting effect in every corner of the world.
Now, our fear is that the world will forget Afghanistan and Afghan women as under the bloody rule of the Taliban in the late 1990s. Therefore, the progressive people and institutions of the United States must not forget Afghan women.
We will raise our voices loudest and continue our resistance and fight for secular democracy and women’s rights!

La Misión de Mujeres Afganas (Afghan Women’s Mission) se ha puesto en contacto con RAWA -Asociación Revolucionaria de Mujeres de Afganistán– (Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan) para atender sus necesidades en este momento urgente.

Desde los primeros días en que los saqueadores y asesinos de la Alianza del Norte volvieron al poder en 2002 hasta las últimas llamadas conversaciones de paz, acuerdos y acuerdos en Doha y la liberación de 5000 terroristas de las cárceles en 2020/21, era muy obvio que incluso la retirada no tendrá un buen final.

La principal razón es la múltiple crisis interna de

Sonali Kolhatkar: Los líderes talibanes dicen que respetarán los derechos de las mujeres siempre que cumplan con la ley islámica. Algunos medios occidentales están pintando esto de manera positiva. ¿No dijeron los talibanes lo mismo hace 20 años? ¿Cree que hay algún cambio en su actitud hacia los derechos humanos y los derechos de la mujer?

Sonali Kolhatkar: ¿Por qué el Ejército Nacional Afgano y el gobierno afgano respaldado por Estados Unidos se derrumbaron tan rápidamente?
RAWA: Algunas de las principales razones entre muchas son:

Necesitamos que los estadounidenses alcen la voz y protesten contra las políticas belicistas de su gobierno y apoyen el fortalecimiento de la lucha del pueblo en Afganistán contra estos bárbaros.
Es la naturaleza humana resistir y la historia da testimonio. Tenemos los gloriosos ejemplos de los movimientos de lucha estadounidense “Occupy Wall Street” y “Black Lives Matter”.
Hemos visto que ningun nivel de opresión, tiranía y violencia puede detener la resistencia. ¡Las mujeres ya no estarán encadenadas!
A la mañana siguiente, después de la entrada de los talibanes en la capital, un grupo de nuestras jóvenes y valientes mujeres pintó grafitis en las paredes de Kabul con el lema: ¡Abajo los talibanes! Nuestras mujeres ahora son políticamente conscientes y ya no quieren vivir bajo el Burka, algo que fácilmente hacían hace 20 años. Continuaremos nuestras luchas mientras encontramos formas inteligentes de mantenernos seguras.
Creemos que el imperio militar inhumano de Estados Unidos no solo es el enemigo del pueblo afgano, sino la mayor amenaza para la paz y la inestabilidad mundiales.
