Turkish FEMICIDE plague: At least 275 women killed in first 10 months of 2022

At least 275 women in Turkey were killed by men between January and October 2022 despite the government’s claim that the number of femicides in the country is trending downward, the Birgün daily reported, citing data from the We Will Stop Femicide Platform (KCDP).

Thousands rally in Turkey to demand end of violence against women

According to the data, 19 of the women who were killed had obtained a restraining order against their murderers. Thirty-four of the women were killed in October alone.

Based on the data from the KCDP, while at least one femicide occurred every day of the year, there was an 88 percent increase in the number of femicide cases in October of this year compared to the same month of 2021.

The most common “motivation” for the murder of women was their refusal to marry or have a relationship with their killers.

Eighteen of the women were killed by their husbands. Additionally, 20 were killed at home and seven were murdered on the street.

Twenty-six of the femicides were recorded as “death under suspicious circumstances.” The platform said, “Instead of explaining how many women were killed, why, how and by whom, the Ministry of Interior is distorting the facts by saying that the femicide data was prepared incorrectly.”

The woman rights platform said women are not protected by the government, adding: “Women apply to the government for protection, but the authorities do not fulfill their responsibilities. Seven percent, or 19, of the women killed in 2022 were murdered despite having a restraining order against their killers.”

Femicides and violence against women are serious problems in Turkey, where women are killed, raped or beaten every day. Many critics say the main reason behind the situation is the policies of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government, which protects violent and abusive men by granting them impunity.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sparked outrage in Turkey and the international community after he issued a decree in March 2021 that pulled the country out of an international treaty that requires governments to adopt legislation prosecuting perpetrators of domestic violence and similar abuse as well as marital rape and female genital mutilation.

The Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, better known as the Istanbul Convention, is an international accord designed to protect women’s rights and prevent domestic violence in societies and was opened to signature of member countries of the Council of Europe in 2011.

A message of solidarity from the captive member of the Anarchist Action Organization to the anarchist guerrilla Alfredo Cospito, who is on a hunger strike against the 41bis isolation regime.

For some, the bond between partners is built on shared positions or philosophical opinions. In an empty dimension where common words are far from action.

In guerrilla warfare, what makes us comrades is the common enlistment in this war, the elections, the hostilities behind the mound of the anarchist struggle

And when we are chained, our common component is complicity, political responsibility, irreducible stability along the same paths. It is the dedication to the rhythm of the path of fire.

‘Four EU states abusing Pegasus spyware – Poland, Hungary, Greece and Spain- all EU have access to it’ -Report

At least four EU countries are engaging in “illegitimate use” of spyware, with some using it as a method of control, Dutch MEP Sophie in’t Veld claimed on Tuesday, as she presented a new report on the issue.

In’t Veld spills the beans

EU report accuses four member states of abusing spyware

The 159-page draft document was produced by the European Parliament’s PEGA committee, which is investigating illegal surveillance of EU citizens.

It directly accuses Poland, Hungary, Greece and Spain of abusing the software and says there are “suspicions” about its use in Cyprus.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, the lawmaker stressed that the worrying trend posed a “grave threat to democracy” on the continent and that the bloc is ill-equipped to deal with such “an attack on democracy from within.”

All EU member states have spyware at their disposal, whether they admit it or not, a Dutch MEP said..

In’t Veld noted that the report, which took over seven months to gather, was still incomplete due to nearly all EU governments ignoring or outright refusing to cooperate with the committee or to provide any useful information on spyware use.

Nevertheless, the MEP stated that the investigation has found “900 pieces of a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle,” and that the picture was clear.

“The spyware scandal is not a series of isolated national cases of abuse, but a full-blown European affair,” the committee’s report says, noting that EU member states have actively been using the tool for political purposes and to cover up corruption and criminal activity. Some governments have even gone as far as to embed spyware in a system “deliberately designed for authoritarian rule,” the report adds.

In’t Veld claimed that while the abuse of spyware was “mostly seen through the keyhole of national politics,” it was in fact an “entirely European matter” that directly affects EU institutions, MEPs, commissioners and commission officials and ministers.

The lawmaker went on to note that the perpetrators of this abuse currently sit on the European Council, which further undermines the integrity of elections and decision-making in the EU, and affects a wide range of European laws and policies.

In’t Veld proposed a number of measures to curb the illegal use of spyware by EU governments, such as introducing a moratorium on the use of surveillance systems unless certain conditions are met, and creating a framework for the “responsible use” of such tools.

The PEGA committee was set up in March to investigate the alleged illegal use of spyware surveillance software, including the Israeli-developed Pegasus program which was found to have been used to target over 50,000 people, including journalists, lawyers, prosecutors and even heads of EU states.
