In the early hours of this Friday, two activists of Rebellion or Extinction and Scientific Rebellion have stained the stern of this luxurious boat with biodegradable red paint and have deployed a banner that could read “Billionaires should not exist ” (“Billionaires Shouldn’t Exist”).
As explained to El Salto, with this protest the activists want to make visible and denounce the responsibility that billionaires have for the climate crisis.
The non-violent protest has passed peacefully. The activists have bypassed the security of the port and have approached their target, where they have acted using two fire extinguishers loaded with this red liquid. It wasn’t until a few moments later that precinct security showed up, who held them until the police arrived on the scene and identified them.
“This year we have experienced the highest temperatures in the history of mankind and instead of reducing emissions, we continue to emit trillions of tons of CO₂”, complains one of the activists during the protest, while noting that the people most responsible for this situation is the one that hoards the most wealth in the world.

The company was founded by his father, Sam Walton, and today occupies one of the first places in the lists of companies with the highest revenues, as well as having a market capitalization of 429 billion dollars.
Nancy Walton bought this 110-meter-long yacht in 2019 from the Qatari royal family for the amount of 280 million euros. The yacht was already in the spotlight of another activist group last July, when members of Futur Vegetal sprayed it with paint in a similar way when it was docked in Ibiza.
“We need to decrease and reduce emissions drastically and we will not ask it from the people who have the least. We must take away the social license from this 1% of the population to pollute everything they want simply because they have money and power”, explains one of the activists, who also calls for the creation of a wealth tax to alleviate the costs of the ecosocial transition.
“And that the money collected be allocated to the Lost and Damage fund”, the activist said, referring to the Loss and Damage Fund established at last year’s United Nations Climate Conference (COP 27 ) with the aim of providing financial assistance to the nations most vulnerable and affected by the effects of climate change, the vast majority located in the Global South. Those which, in turn, have historically contributed least to the current crisis.
1% in figures
More and more organizations are reporting that the climate and ecological crisis is closely linked to a crisis of global inequality. In response to this year’s report by the IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Oxfam issued a statement asserting that “to keep us below 1.5°C , all people on the planet should emit below an average of 2.2 tonnes of CO₂ per year by 2030”. However, the richest 1% exhaust this ‘carbon budget’ in just the first twelve days of the year, to which they claim that “this is a totally ridiculous inequality”. As the organization also assures, since 2020 alone, the richest 1% has accumulated 63% of the wealth produced in the world.

El superiot de la família Walmart torna a ser objecte de protesta, aquest cop al port de Barcelona. A primera hora d’aquest divendres, dos activistes de Rebel·lió o Extinció i Rebel·lió Científica han tacat la popa d’aquesta luxosa embarcació amb pintura vermella biodegradable i han desplegat una pancarta en la qual es podia llegir “Billionaires should not exist” (“Els multimilionaris no haurien d’existir”).
Segons han explicat a El Salto, amb aquesta protesta els activistes volen visibilitzar i denunciar la responsabilitat que els multimilionaris tenen sobre la crisi climàtica.
La protesta no violenta ha transcorregut amb tranquil·litat. Els activistes han burlat la seguretat del port i s’han acostat al seu objectiu, on han actuat fent servir dos extintors carregats d’aquest líquid vermell. No ha estat fins a uns breus moments després que ha aparegut la seguretat del recinte, qui els ha retingut fins que la policia ha arribat al lloc i els han identificat.
“Enguany hem viscut les temperatures més altes en la història de la humanitat i en lloc de reduir emissions, continuem emetent bilions de tones de CO₂”, denúncia un dels activistes durant la protesta, al mateix temps que remarca que les persones més responsables d’aquesta situació són les que més riquesa acaparen en el món.

L’empresa va ser fundada pel seu pare, Sam Walton, i avui dia ocupa un dels primers llocs en les llistes d’empreses amb majors ingressos, així com també compta amb 429 mil milions de dòlars de capitalització borsària.
Nancy Walton va comprar aquest iot de 110 metres d’eslora l’any 2019 a la família reial de Qatar per la quantitat de 280 milions d’euros. El iot ja va estar en el punt de mira d’un altre col·lectiu activista el mes de juliol passat, quan membres de Futur Vegetal el van ruixar amb pintura de manera similar quan aquest es trobava atracat a Eivissa.
“Cal decréixer i reduir emissions de manera dràstica i no li ho demanarem a les persones que menys tenen. Hem de llevar-los la llicència social a aquest 1% de la població de contaminar tot el que vulguin simplement perquè tenen diners i poder”, explica un dels activistes, que a més reclama la necessitat de la creació d’un impost a la riquesa per a pal·liar els costos de la transició ecosocial.
“I que els diners recaptats es destini al fons de Lost and Damage”, sentència l’activista, referint-se al Fons per a Pèrdues i Danys establert en la Conferència de les Nacions Unides sobre el Clima de l’any passat (COP 27) amb l’objectiu de brindar assistència financera a les nacions més vulnerables i afectades pels efectes del canvi climàtic, la gran majoria localitzades al Sud Global. Aquelles que, al seu torn, històricament menys han contribuït a la crisi actual.

Són cada cop més les organitzacions que denuncien que la crisi climàtica i ecològica està estretament vinculada a una crisi de desigualtat global. Com a resposta a l’informe d’aquest any de l’IPCC, el Grup Intergovernamental d’Experts sobre el Canvi Climàtic, Oxfam va emetre un comunicat en què assegurava que “per a mantenir-nos per sota de 1,5 °C, totes les persones del planeta haurien d’emetre per sota d’una mitjana de 2,2 tones de CO₂ a l’any d’aquí a 2030”.

No obstant això, l’1% més ric esgota aquest ‘pressupost de carboni’ en tan sols els primers dotze dies de l’any, al que afirmen que “es tracta d’una desigualtat totalment ridícula”. Com també assegura l’organització, només des de 2020, l’1% més ric ha acumulat el 63% de la riquesa produïda en el món.
