The 26-year-old joined throngs of women in the streets of Colombia over the past month to demand an end to patriarchal oppression at the hands of a U.S.-backed neoliberal state..

Women’s presence in Colombia’s national strike—both as activists and as victims—has caught the world’s attention. Many have spoken out against police violence and sexual abuse during the current demonstrations. This, however, is not a new issue. Police, armed forces and illegal groups have used women’s bodies as weapons of war for decades.

War and climate change are intimately linked, argues Brian Larkin. He explains why he and fellow activists from XR Peace blockaded BAE Systems’ London headquarters in 2019 over its links to the bombing of Yemeni civilians and the UK nuclear weapons programme.

In 2019 a small group of people from Trident Ploughshares set up XR Peace to bring peace movement groups together to raise awareness of the overlooked intersection between militarism and the climate crisis. Our message: War causes climate change. Climate change causes war.  

In October that year, during the second Extinction Rebellion in London, demanding that government recognise the seriousness of the threat to global security posed by the climate, six of us blocked the entrance to the head office of BAE Systems, the UK and Europe’s largest military industrial company.

María Pérez LaCruz was born in Teruel, Spain, on May 3, 1917. Her parents were Manuel and Isabel. Her nickname was “La Jabalina”.

At the age of 17, she joined the Libertarian Youth, and in August 1936 she joined the anarchist militia of the “Iron Column” ..

Economic necessity forced the family to move to the port city of Sagunto in Valencia when María was only 6 years old, where there was a very important problem of labor conflict due to the unfortunate living conditions of the workers linked to the railroad and the mines of Teruel.
