Exxon’s top Climate Murderer to be Secretary of State: 350.org comment

NEW YORK CITY – President-elect Donald Trump announced on Saturday afternoon that he has selected ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as his Secretary of State nomination. 350.org Executive Director May Boeve issued the following reaction:

“This is unfathomable. We can’t let Trump put the world’s largest oil company in charge of our international climate policy. Tillerson may be a friend of Putin’s, but he’s no friend of the planet. ExxonMobil is still a leading funder of climate denial and is pursuing a business plan that will destroy our future. Tillerson deserves a federal investigation, not federal office.

dapl_protest_0 We’ll be pressuring Senators to turn the confirmation process into a hearing on ExxonMobil’s history of climate deception. If Exxon is found guilty of working with other oil companies to deceive the public and their shareholders about the threat of climate change, they could be on the hook for fraud and racketeering charges. It would be the largest corporate scandal in history and could not only stop Tillerson’s appointment, but take down the entire company. Dreaming Beyond Capitalism: A Culture Without Fear

George Monbiot lists 13 world catastrophes in his Guardian column this week, starting with the granting of absolute power to a man who appears to possess no capacity for restraint, balance or empathy, but a bottomless capacity for revenge and vindictiveness.

High on his list is runaway climate change which has a trajectory way beyond that envisaged by the Paris agreement.

Equally alarming are the red lights flashing for Economic Collapse, possibly kicked off next week with the fall of Italian banks and the Brexit mess.

Then there is the falling apart of the European Union, takeovers by far right governments in the pay of capitalist corporations, legitimation of sexism and racism, not to mention spreading permanent war as well as longer term emergencies such as the UN declaring that at current rates of soil loss we have 60 years of harvests left, and of course the extinction crisis which appears, if anything, to be accelerating.

With the world in such a mess it’s a good moment to remind each other that it NEED NOT BE SO… Reaffirming long term goals can inspire us to stronger daily resistance.

UK’s Largest Ever Anti-Fracking Gathering

An estimated two thousand people marched through the center of Manchester today in what was probably the largest anti-fracking gathering ever seen in the United Kingdom. Activist converged on the city from Lancashire, Yorkshire, London, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, claiming Manchester was today the “capital of the so-called bleak and desolate north“.

The march was led by Bianca Jagger, who addressed the crowd at the Castlefield Arena by saying “I’m here not only as the founder and president of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation, but as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother because I feel fracking is a real threat to our way of life, it’s a threat to our environment, it’s a threat to our water sources, it’s a threat to the air we breathe, it’s a threat to everything we think is important in our lives.”

El gas de fracking no es un sustituto menos dañino para el clima. Gas Natural Fenosa ha contratado para recibir centenares de cargamentos del Gas del Fracking que está arrasando EEUU, causando innumerables cánceres, acuíferos envenenados y una nube de metano visible del espacio que empeora muchísima la crisis del clima mundial.

Además los envíos marítimos contribuyen hasta el 15% de los gases de cambio climático, más contaminación directa de los océanos.
