International Land Grab..Save the Commons

A massive international land grab is now underway as investors and national governments buy up millions of acres of farmlands in Africa, Asia and Latin America.  It amounts to an unprecedented and novel set of enclosures of worldwide land, much of it customary land that rural communities use and manage collectively.

Hundreds of millions of rural poor people rely upon the land for their families’ food, water and material — but they don’t have formal property rights in the land.  Those rights typically belong to the government, which is authorizing the sale of “unowned” lands or “wastelands” to investors, who will then use the land for market-based farming or biofuels production.

The implications for global hunger and poverty are enormous.  Instead of commoners having local authority to grow and harvest their own food, they are being thrown off the land so that large multinational corporations and investors can feed their own countries or make a speculative killing on the world land market.  A commons is converted into a market, with all the attendant pathologies.

The 2008 financial crisis and the recent round of rising food prices on world markets have spurred much of the interest in buying up arable lands in poor countries.  Food-insecure countries figure they should take care of their own future even if it means depriving commoners in poor nations thousands of miles away.  So Saudi Arabia is spending $1 billion for 700,000 hectares of land in Africa for rice cultivation.  South Korea is buying up 700,000 hectares of African land as well.  India is assembling investment pools to buy up farmlands.

These are some of the disturbing facts to be found in Liz Alden Wily’s remarkable report, “The Tragedy of Public Lands:  The Fate of the Commons Under Global Commercial Pressure,” released by the International Land Coalition in January 2011.

A copy of Liz Alden Wily’s report can be downloaded here as a pdf file. Farm Land Grab is also closely monitoring this odious, little-known enclosure of the commons.  Finally, see a report by GRAIN, a small international NGO concerned about farmers’ control over biodiversity and local knowledge:  “Seized:  The 2008 Land Grab for Food and Security.”

Roundup Ready for your front lawn

In press release titled “ USDA Responds to Regulation Requests Regarding Kentucky Bluegrass,” agency officials announced their decision not to regulate a “Roundup Ready” strain of Kentucky bluegrass—that is, a strain genetically engineered to withstand glyphosate, Monsanto’s widely used herbicide, which we know as Roundup. The maker of the novel grass seed, Scotts Miracle Gro, is now free to sell it far and wide. So you’ll no doubt be seeing Roundup Ready bluegrass blanketing lawns and golf courses near you—and watching anal neighbors and groundskeepers literally dousing the grass in weed killer without fear of harming a single precious blade.

According to Doug Gurian-Sherman, senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists’ Food and Environment Program, the documents released by the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) along with the announcement portend a major change in how the feds will deal with genetically modified crops.

Notably, given the already-lax regulatory regime governing GMOs (genetically modified organisms, click here for a primer), APHIS seems to be ramping down oversight to the point where it is essentially meaningless. The new regime corresponding with the bluegrass announcement would “drastically weaken USDA’s regulation.” This is perhaps the most serious change in US regs for [genetically modified] crops for many years….

…In its July 1 response, the USDA agreed: “[N]one of the organisms used in generating this genetically engineered (GE) glyophosphate tolerant Kentucky bluegrass…are considered to be plant pests,” so Roundup Ready bluegrass “does not meet the definition of a ‘regulated article’ and is not subject” to the Plant Protection Act. In other words, go forth and multiply.

The agency also retracted its only other hook for regulating GM crops—the noxious-weeds provision. The Center for Food Safety had petitioned the USDA to classify genetically modified bluegrass as a noxious weed. The case for this is strong: bluegrass has light pollen that can be carried for miles on the wind, meaning that genetically modified bluegrass can easily transfer its genes to established conventional bluegrass.

CO2-free NH3, from Rjukan waterfall,1913.

NH3 fuel can be burned without producing CO2 or toxic gases, plus its cheaper and nearly as high powered as gasoline But right now its made with Natural Gas feedstock.. which DOES pollute and emit CO2. However NH3 is ideal for production with smaller scale renewable ‘green’ facilities. For example we can go right back to 1913, and climb up to the waterfall on the ice free fjord of Rjukan, where ‘green’ NH3 fertilizer was made for half the planet!

The 60 MW Rjukan dam in Telemark, Norway produced ammonia via electrolysis of water for many years from 1913 producing fertilizer for much of Europe at the Vemork power station at the Norsk H Rjukan waterfall in the Telemark province (state)

In the European and American race to develop a process for manufacturing artificial fertiliser, the Rjukanfossen waterfall was harnessed in 1911 to provide sufficient power to run Professor Kristian Birkeland’s electric arc method for separating nitrogen from air. This method was more effective than any other method tried at that time (Niagara 1903 etc.) and, following test runs at Notodden (1907), the method was seen as promising from an industrial perspective.

Norsk Hydro[1], was formed and an urban community was created in the early 1900s in a poor and remote rural area. This involved a number of elements such as power stations, factories, residential areas, buildings for administrative and social purposes, as well as equipment for exporting calcium nitrate (Norges-salpeter, Norwegian saltpetre), a significant industrial product for agriculture worldwide.

Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3. It is normally encountered as a gas with a characteristic pungent odour. Ammonia contributes significantly to the nutritional needs of terrestrial organisms by serving as a precursor to foodstuffs and fertilizers.

Seed-Mothers take on bio-pirates.

Seed-Mothers’ Confront Climate Insecurity By Manipadma Jena

BHUBANESWAR, India, Jul 1, 2011 (IPS) – In eastern Orissa state’s tribal hinterlands about 200 ‘seed-mothers’ are on mission mode – identifying, collecting and conserving traditional seed varieties and motivating farming families to use them.–

As they spread their message through the hinterland, targeting another 140 villages, the women also promote zero dependence on chemical fertilisers and pesticides….

The struggles of Malkangiri farmers with climate change is visible in the Gudumpadar village where seed-mothers are passionately reviving agricultural heritage and convincing the community to stay with local seeds and bio-fertilisers and pesticides….

Well-known environmental activist and founder of Navdanya, Vandana Shiva, told IPS that “climate resilient seeds in women’s hands are vital to climate security and corporations that have taken out some 1,600 patents on climate resilient seeds are biopirates”.

“Allowing corporations to hijack and monopolise seed supply is a recipe for food insecurity and climate insecurity,” Shiva averred.

CO2-free fuel exists NOW (NH3) (new Farcebook page)

I`ve made a Farcebook page to promote NH3 fuel click here

This sounds like a scam or a hoax. It’s not, I’m just an old climate activist and writer, not a business.

I couldn’t believe it myself, how come I never knew?..

After all the hot air and ballyhoo.. CO2-free fuel has existed all along. Has existed plus its cheaper to make than petrol, from air and water plus a power source and some catalysts. check on Wikipedia. It’s impossible but it`s true. (needs link)

The power source to make it nowadays is Natural Gas,(emits CO2 etc) but making NH3 is easier from renewables. For years all Europe’s NH3 fertilizer needs came from renewable energy.( needs link)

Cars have long ago been converted and driven across America, plus lorries, tractors locomotives and even a NASA Jet. NH3 fuel has existed for a century, buses ran on it in the 40s!! (needs link)

Plus now there’s a new way to make it, cheaper and less energy, called SSAS.
(If the oil companies don’t `bury` the patents as we suspect they did with the new solar panels) (needs link)

Safety.. Ammonia is dangerous, but MUCH less than petroleum, with a fraction of relative accidents. Its low pressure and can`t explode. Only burns at a precise temperature. Evaporates upwards fast, etc. It IS also dangerous for aquatic fauna.

One more thing, I understand that using NH3 correctly produces also no NOx. an IMPORTANT DETAIL since 100s of 1000s die yearly from respiratory diseases critically worsened by vehicle exhausts. (needs link and research)

The oil and vehicle Corporations know this full well but take no responsibility for all these horrible deaths, nor for the environmental mayhem or the millions already suffering from climate change, or all the unique species now faced with extinction. On the contrary they claim tax breaks and handouts on top of their mega profits. (link needed here)

But its not just the corporations. NOBODY is interested in NH3, (Green Gas, Hydrofuel, Ammonia). Nobody has even replied to my blogposts about it though I have it on Google 6 times. It seems like we need a critical mass also for common sense ideas to be accepted!

The aim of this page is to publicize NH3 CO2-free fuel, and specifically to alert the 1000s of climate, ecology, renewable, Save the Planet type folks and organizations and appeal to them to publicize this option IN ANY WAY possible.

All existing combustion engines should be converted to run on NH3 immediately to avoid the danger of irreversible runaway climate change in our thin and fragile atmosphere.

Ignore this like everybody else.. to hell with the planet..  or PLEASE HELP NOW

Jellyfish keep UK Nuke Plant Shut

Jellyfish Invasion Keeps UK Nuclear Power Plant Shut Down

Doing an even better job than activist environmentalists might have done, a bloom of jellies has caused a UK nuclear plant to stay offline, since the jellies would clog up the intake of water for cooling.

Reutersreports that the invasion is affecting EDF Energy’s Torness nuclear power plant in Scottish, which kept reactors offline on Wednesday to avoid the jellies gumming up the works.Interestingly, the report also says that this could be an event that will become more common as oceans that are growing more acidic as the water absorbs more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The changing pH balance of the water is actually just fine for jellies. And it helps that the water around the east coast of Scotland is actually one degree Celsius above average for this time of year.
