FRACKING ‘worse than coal’ for climate

The new kid on the energy block, shale gas, may be worse in climate change terms than coal, a study concludes.

Drawn from rock through a controversial “fracking” process, some hail the gas as a “stepping stone” to a low-carbon future and a route to energy security.

But US researchers found that shale gas wells leak substantial amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

This makes its climate impact worse than conventional gas, they say – and probably worse than coal as well.

Real green living ??

degrowth

by HeatherRogers

The eco-village of Vauban in Germany signposts one answer to climate change, reports Heather Rogers

Over the past decade, an eco‑friendly marketplace has been unleashed across the west. Thanks to consumer demand, the organic food business has grown by double digits every year for the past 15 – waning only briefly in 2009 due to the recession. Automakers are turning out more gas-electric hybrids and full electrics than ever before; biofuel markets are escalating every year; and the global carbon trade is now worth over $30 billion annually.

The promise implicit in these changes is that global warming can be stopped by swapping dirty products for green ones, with little disruption to daily life. Getting behind the wheel of a gas-electric hybrid is not so different from driving a regular car. Ethanol and biodiesel are the same as ordinary petrol. And paying a little extra for an airline ticket to cancel out CO2 emissions takes almost no effort at all……  /cont..

Waste Heat to Power Carbon Capture

NOTE.. This for me is a typical ‘tech fix’.. it could work, but if they can harness waste heat from power stations they’re much more likely to turn it into electricity and make more money!   mikegilli).

…The IEA just said we’ll need 3000 carbon capture and storage projects by 2050 if we’re too reduce greenhouse gas emissions enough to avert potentially catastrophic global warming. Considering that there are just five currently operating and 75 in planning stages, and there’s a strong contingent of researchers expressing doubt about that scale of CCS being feasible, it’s a daunting challenging ahead, no doubt. Well, Greentech Media is highlighting an interesting way of meeting that challenge:

[Global Thermostat] essentially captures the heat from power plants and/or industrial equipment to drive its CO2 capture equipment…..ETC ETC

5 years have now passed since Eric was jailed as part of an FBI campaign against greens and anarchists.

Eric did nothing, just planned an action with an undercover police officer who got $65,000 to entrap him.

He’s still resisting inside and there’ll be an international Resistance Day on June 11th 2011 for him and the anarchist Marie Mason, who’s jailed for 21 years for attacking a Transgenic Food lab.

One way to give solidarity would be to translate more stuff from their websites. I’ll do a sticker for Marie Mason as well.

Eric McDavid was arrested in January 2006 after being entrapped by a paid government informant – “Anna” – and was charged with a single count of conspiracy. Eric – who never carried out any actions and was accused of what amounts to “thought crime” – refused to cooperate with the state and took his case to trial. After a trial fraught with errors, the jury convicted Eric. He was subsequently sentenced to almost 20 years in prison. More information on Eric’s case can be found at http://supportmariemason.org/2011/04/07/june11-2011

Marie Mason was arrested in March 2008 after her former partner – Frank Ambrose – turned informant for the FBI. Facing a life sentence if she went to trial, Marie accepted a plea bargain in September 2008, admitting her involvement in the burning of an office connected to GMO research and the destruction of a piece of logging equipment. At her sentencing in February the following year, she received a sentence of almost 22 years. More information on Marie’s case can be found at http://supporteric.org/updates.htm

the death of a language and death of a people

livelihoods – when these get in the way of a development for profit…

..A few days ago I received an email alert from the Guardian telling me that the last female rhino had been killed in Krugersdorp Park in South Africa. After hacking its horn, the female was left to bleed to death – cruelly and coldly. I feel unforgiving towards those that did this horrible thing. Last year 129 rhinos were killed and in the first six months of 2010 another 136 have already been killed – all for their horns.

This particular rhino, who I have decided to call ‘Skylady’ is survived by her ‘distraught’ calf who is now living with two other orphans of mothers killed in this way.

I am trying to think of how I can connect this death, borne of greed and a desire by men to experience some mythical sexual pleasure, to other acts of violence against women, children and men. Both animals and humans have been displaced for the same reasons by transnational corporations, corrupt governments and wars over national resources.

There are hundreds of endangered mammals, birds, fish and reptiles; probably the most worrying are the disappearing bees, without which we and every other living creature may also disappear sooner than later. Bees are seriously important:……./continued

REPSOL KILLS

…The Oil Industry has always used the planet like toilet paper. Due to opur global dependency on oil, the purchase of poliutical complicity, and agressive marketing penetration, the energy corporations can act with complete impunity.

In fact the repeated accidents, spills and extreme toxicity of the industry, along with the criminal participation in military conflicts around the planet, are silenced by the bought-out mass media and the saturation publicity of the energy giants….

Repsol Mata
