As RT’s Arabic-language crew visited the area, they witnessed scenes of chaos – as locals scrambled to acquire food – and quiet desperation, with many residents swollen with hunger, waiting for outside help, or resigned to their fate. The spokeswoman for the Yekîneyên Parastinê Yên Jinê (Women’s Defense Units, YPJ), Nesrin Abdullah, has analyzed the current situation by the Firat News Agency in the first interview of the year 2017:

As YPJ, how do you evaluate the war in 2016? In what battles and operations did you participate?

In the first place, 2016 was a different year because some formations were established and the YPJ took part in these formations. Before 2016, YPG and YPJ carried out co-organized operations. The last female speaker of the Resígaro language has been murdered in Peru. Her body was found decapitated at her home in the Amazon rainforest.

SEAN SWAIN IS ON HUNGER STRIKE

We received word recently from a friend of Sean’s that Sean is currently on hunger strike and has been placed in a suicide cell.

Although details are still murky, we know that Sean has been without food since December 26th. He was charged with extortion of a deputy warden and had begun a disciplinary process when he began his hunger strike and was placed in a suicide cell.

We know that the prison is recognizing his hunger strike and following the associated procedures, which include taking him to the medical unit every day and weighing him and taking his vital signs.
