The populist party of former Prime Minister Robert Fico that wants to stop military aid to Ukraine and is critical of the European Union and NATO has won Slovakia’s election, results showed on Sunday.
SMER-SSD party scored 23.3 percent, beating the centrist Progressive Slovakia (PS) that garnered 17 percent of the votes, the Slovak Statistics Office said early on Sunday after completing the count of 99.98 percent of the votes from some 6,000 polling stations.
The 59-year-old Fico has promised that Slovakia, one of Europe’s biggest donors to Ukraine as a share of its gross domestic product (GDP), will not send “a single round of ammunition” to Ukraine and has called for better relations with Russia.
The country of 5.5 million people created in 1993 following the breakup of Czechoslovakia has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since Russia invaded last February, donating arms and opening the borders for refugees fleeing the war.
With no party winning an outright majority, the party with the largest share of the vote gets the first chance to form a coalition and the composition of any government is likely to be dependent on half a dozen smaller parties.
Fico, who served as prime minister from 2006 to 2010 and again from 2012 to 2018, is likely to become prime minister if he is able to get the support of the left-wing Hlas (Voice) party, which came in third with 14.7 percent votes.
Another potential coalition partner, the ultranationalist Slovak National Party, a clear pro-Russian group, received 5.6 percent.
Radical change Slovakia’s foreign policy
The leader of the Hlas party, Peter Pellegrini, congratulated Fico on his victory but said two former prime ministers in one government might not work well.
“It’s not ideal but that doesn’t mean such a coalition can’t be created,” Pellegrini, Fico’s former deputy in SMER-SSD, said.

The three parties would have a parliamentary majority if they joined forces in a coalition government.
PS leader Michal Simecka said on Sunday that the party would do what it could to prevent vote winner SMER-SSD from forming a government.
“SMER-SSD won the election, we of course respect that,” Simecka told a news conference.
“But at the same time, we believe that this is very bad news for Slovakia. And it would be even worse news if Robert Fico succeeds in forming a government,” he added.

A plasma drill made by Slovakian company GA Drilling.“The millimetre-wave beam does not rotate so the shape of the beam will determine the shape of the borehole cross section,” says Woskov. “By using circular or elliptical shaped launch waveguides we have produced circular and elliptical holes in basalt in the laboratory. “Using an elliptical-shaped bore hole aligned with the asymmetric subsurface stresses will increase the collapse strength of a borehole by factors of 10 or more.”
We Can Save the Planet!! Deep-Geo Drilling method offers Endless free Steam energy Anywhere
Feel the Heat: Paul Woskov of MIT holds water-cooling lines leading to a test chamber, and a sample of rock with a hole made by a beam from a gyrotron. Photo: Paul Rivenberg/MIT
In just 2 years the first Deep-Geo wells will be drilled. With new millimeter technology rocks can be vaporized in a self sealing borehole up to 20kms deep.
It’s not toxic, reaches only the hot rocks well before magma, and doesn’t fracture or poison ground water like fracking.
And you can do it almost anywhere.. that is: right next to redundant coal, oil and gas power stations, supplying the super heated steam to power their turbines, without oil, gas coal or nuclear.. 100% CO2 free! (unless we include CO2 released in the manufacture of the drilling equipment)
We live on a piece that fell off the sun. Just 20kms down the rocks are at 500 C. All we need to do is drill down, pump in water and use superheated steam for free electricity lasting millions of years.
Problems:
Deep-Geo is not fully demonstrated yet.
It’s happening in the US where the oil/gas lobby may try to stop it.
It won’t end capitalism, though if it goes viral worldwide it could slow down the Climate Catastrophe, though ecocide would continue.
The challenge for Activists against Climate Meltdown is to evaluate the reality of the Deep-Geo promise and, if it really works as promised, to support and demand it, while continuing to campaign against ongoing Capitalist ecocide.

The Perfect Energy Source Is Already Here – Endless Geothermal Is Poised for Release From Deep in the Earth
The base of the new drilling method was discovered ‘accidentally’ by Paul Woskov and his team and developed for 10 years at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center before various companies began trials.
As physicists work in the nuclear fusion sector, they inadvertently invented a tool that could allow geothermal plants to deliver limitless clean energy by harnessing the power of the Earth.
That tool is a large millimeter-wave laser drill that will allow engineers to bore down more than 12.4 miles (20 km) into the Earth’s crust to harness the heat from the planet’s core.
This laser drilling technology is being pioneered by a spin-off company called Quaise from MIT .
The bottom line is that this idea is not science fiction, and Quaise has the money to put several full-scale demonstration machines into action by 2024, and hopes to have a 100- megawatt supercritical geothermal plant in operation by 2026.
At 12.4 miles into the Earth’s crust, temperatures soar to 500°C, a sector-redefining level compared to traditional drill bit borehole temperatures of around 200°C. At this stage and depth, water under the ground becomes “supercritical,” a state of matter where it’s neither a gas nor a liquid.
“A power plant that uses supercritical water as the working fluid can extract up to 10 times more useful energy from each drop when compared to non-supercritical plants,” a spokesperson from Quaise told New Atlas. “Aiming for supercritical conditions is key to attaining power densities consistent with fossil fuels.”
A recycling masterclass
It’s perhaps ironic that humans would seek to harness the energy of the sun and stars in a nuclear fusion reactor when there is 20 billion times more heat under our feet than the entire world’s energy consumption. Merely 0.03% of global energy is delivered from geothermal despite this richness.
A virtually limitless supply of energy exists in the form of this supercritical fluid snaking its way through the crust and mantle of the planet, and just 0.01% of it would provide far more wattage than the world uses.
In order to reach it though, we need better drilling technology, and Quaise is taking advantage of the work put into a 1970s piece of technology called a gyrotron.
When needing to heat water into a plasma at the heart of a nuclear fusion reactor, scientists need to generate between 90-150 million degrees Celsius of heat. This has been done by both lasers and super magnets.
The gyrotron is one of those lasers, and it generates electromagnetic waves in the millimeter-wave spectrum, shorter than microwaves and longer than infrared or visible light. Designed, invented, and tested in the USSR, the device is excellent at rapidly heating up a plasma without substantial energy usage.
So, accessing already existing energy with already existing technology, Quaise has proved itself remarkably efficient. They’ve raised $63 million in funding and they’re looking to cut out fossil fuels in a real way before the end of the decade.
Their next planned step may be the greatest recycling trick in the industry.
As coal-fired power plants continue to be shuttered around the world, their giant, already established infrastructure for converting steam into electricity, large electricity distribution equipment, and talented workforce could simply be taken over by Quaise, who could merely replace the coal-fired components with those meant for harnessing supercritical water.
Pure futurism
“There are somewhere upwards of 8,500 coal-fired power plants around the world, totaling over 2,000 gigawatts of capacity, and they’ll all have to find something else to do by 2050,” writes Loz Blain at New Atlas.
Blain argues this is more revolutionary than nuclear fusion, and the beauty of the design, if it works, is that the technology originally made for fusion reactors could end up putting them out of a job.
At 12-15 miles below the Earth’s surface, it doesn’t matter where the drill or ex-coal plant is located, the heat will be pretty much the same.
In fact, the world would be set for a paradigm shift.
Since unlimited clean energy could be obtained within most nations, it would untether them from geo-political concerns about oil-rich countries like the US and their human rights abuses.
On land and sea, birds and wildlife would be untouched by any massive polluting oil spills that would become a thing of the past.

In choosing to stand beside Ilham Aliyev, current president of Azerbaijan, Erdoğan has crossed the aisle leaving behind many of his nominal Western allies who have taken strong stances in opposition of Aliyev’s actions in Nagorno-Karabakh, which have been named as ‘mass displacement’ and ‘demographic manipulation’.
(insert – it’s nice that the US and EU proxies ‘verbally’ support the ethnic Armenian majority being expelled from Nagorno Karabakh, but their motives are evil. Nagorno-Karabakh was part of Azerbaijan in the old Soviet Union which collapsed. Then the ethnic Armenians declared independence but got attacked by the Azeri/Turkish. .. Exactly what happened with the ethnic Russians in the small Donbass area of Ukraine! The only difference is that now the cynical US and EU want to court Armenia into NATO against Russia.)
Last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made the controversial but unsurprising decision to stand beside Azerbaijan’s military actions in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, often referred to as Artsakh by Armenians. In a statement he gave addressing the United Nations (UN) General Assembly he stated:
“It is now widely recognised that Karabakh rightfully belongs to Azerbaijan. Any attempt to impose a different status will not be accepted. We stand by Azerbaijan, with which we share the motto of ‘one nation, two states’, in the protection of its territorial integrity”.
These statements come amid chaos in Nagorno-Karabakh. Following a blockade established in December 2022 on the
Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting 120,000 Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, Azerbaijan conducted a large-scale attack, which they called a ‘counter-terrorism operation’ on the region, resulting in dozens of civilian fatalities and even more wounded.
The producers and directors of 27 films have announced their withdrawal from the Golden Orange Film Festival in Turkey’s Antalya province in reaction to the organizing committee’s decision to remove a documentary depicting the plight of victims of a post-coup purge in Turkey, the Stockholm Center for Freedom reported, citing the Diken news website on Wednesday.
“We consider the removal of the documentary from the program an open threat to the freedom of artistic expression,” said the producers and directors in a joint statement. “Festivals belong to the public, and we find it unacceptable that they should be subjected to censorship.”
The productions that were withdrawn included seven movies, six documentaries and 14 short films.
Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) government initiated a massive purge of state institutions following a coup attempt on July 15, 2016. Over 130,000 civil servants lost their jobs due to suspected ties to “terrorist organizations.”
The dismissed individuals also faced barriers to employment in the private sector and restrictions on obtaining passports. Their treatment has been described by human rights groups as “civil death.”
The documentary, titled “Kanun Hükmü” (With the Force of Law), focuses on the challenges faced by Yasemin, a doctor, and Engin, a teacher, who lost their civil service jobs under post-coup emergency decree-laws, known as KHKs, issued by the AKP government.
Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Ministry on Thursday stated that it had withdrawn its support for the Golden Orange Festival. The festival’s sponsors also pulled their support in coordination with the ministry.
Its removal has ignited a storm of criticism.
In an unprecedented move, 20 jury members resigned in protest. Members of the jury for the Adana Altın Koza Film Festival also showed solidarity by expressing their support for the film and its director.
Well-known actors, directors and writers have also voiced their disapproval. Actor, director and writer Orhan Alkaya said those responsible for the removal should “curl up and die—if they can feel shame.”
Münir Korkmaz, a reporter for KHK TV, denounced the removal, saying, “This film was about the honorable struggle of KHK victims. We demand its reinstatement among the competing films.” Turkish film director Ezel Akay echoed the sentiment, labeling the decision a “big mistake.”
The festival’s director, Dr. Ahmet Boyacıoğlu, justified the removal by claiming that an individual in the film is part of an ongoing legal process. Demirci, the film’s director, denied this claim, saying there is no such ongoing legal process and called the removal a “blow to cinema.”
The Fethullah Gülen movement strongly denied having any role in the failed coup in 2016 but President Erdoğan — calling the coup attempt “a gift from God” — and the government initiated a widespread purge, firing hundreds of thousands and dehumanizing and jailing popular Gulen figures.
Professional organizations such as the Actors Union, Cinema Workers Union (Sine-Sen) and Documentary Filmmakers Union are among those demanding the reinstatement of the film to the festival. Various jury members have indicated that they will resume their duties only if the film is reinstated.
The Altın Portakal Film Festival is organized by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, which is run by the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), and the Antalya Culture and Arts Foundation.
