A friend sent along an article on Philip K. Dick, the science fiction author whose works have been turned into Hollywood films like “Blade Runner” and “Minority Report.” Dick hadthis to sayabout societal trends toward narrative construction and information control:
We live in a society in which spurious realities are manufactured by the media, by governments, by big corporations. We are bombarded with pseudo-realities manufactured by very sophisticated people using very sophisticated electronic mechanisms. I do not distrust their motives. I distrust their power. They have a lot of it. And it is an astonishing power: that of creating whole universes, universes of the mind. I ought to know. I do the same thing.
Dick wrote this in the 1970s. If he were writing today, I’m guessing he’d add that he distrusted their motives as well as their power.

While our comrade Serge is fighting like a lion to hold onto his life that the state is trying to take away from him, we are witnessing a new outbreak of violence, this time coming from the media, which is trying to portray him as an individual who should be legitimately shot.
Today, he is still in a coma with a life-threatening prognosis. Our solidarity also goes out to Mickaël and to all those who have been subjected to police violence.
The 30,000 protesters had come with the aim of blocking the construction of the Sainte-Soline mega-dam, a project that aims to monopolize water management in the hands of a minority that benefits from a capitalist system that has nothing to defend except death. . The violence of the armed wing of the democratic State is the clearest expression of this.
The words of the state are tirelessly repeated on mainstream bourgeois news platforms in order to give a media-oriented profile to the enemy they want to fight. The smokescreen does not stand up to the dozens of first-hand accounts that reconstruct the facts. The gendarmerie used grenades to explicitly injure the demonstrators and voluntarily neglected to provide timely first aid, even if it meant letting comrades die.

One of the world’s most famous orcas is going back to the ocean after more than 50 years in captivity, following years of activism pushing for her release.
On Thursday, the Miami Seaquarium, home of the orca named Lolita, also known as Tokitae, announced that it is planning to release her back into her natural habitat in the Pacific Northwest within the next two years.
The effort is part of a first-of-its-kind legal agreement between the Seaquarium and Friends of Toki, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the orca’s welfare.
