Anarchist Bookfair workshop supports call for celebration of all the “Aggravated Activists”
Participants at a workshop organised by Netpol at this year’s Anarchist Bookfair in London have supported a proposal to take on, own and embrace the new police label of “aggravated activism” – by proclaiming and promoting 15 February 2023 as Aggravated Activist Day.
This is a call to publicly celebrate the many campaigns and community initiatives, influenced by anarchist principles, who are trying to assist working class and racialised communities to survive and to resist a government that is interested only in the interests of the rich and powerful.
The idea is to challenge state propaganda portraying this kind of practical organising as automatically a threat – what the police are describing as “activities in furtherance of ideology”.
Netpol has always believed in talking directly to campaigners at risk of becoming the targets of intensive police surveillance.
That is why we held a workshop, on Saturday 17 September at Toynbee Hall, to share information at Britain’s largest anarchist gathering. Netpol explained how the Matrix – more precisely the “threshold and terminology matrix” – is the method the police have adopted for determining who is categorised as an “aggravated activist” and at what level: low, moderate or substantial.

Throughout my adult life I have tended to describe the thing to which I am primarily opposed as “capitalism”.Over the last couple of years, however, I have started to wonder whether this is quite the right word.
Not only does it hinder communication with people used to different political terminologies, but it is looking increasingly outmoded as the powers-that-be try to push us into a harsh new totalitarian era.
I have gradually stopped using the term and, when I share pieces of my older writing which contain the word, I feel slightly awkward and don’t quite know how to reply to people who feel it is not altogether appropriate.
The funny thing, though, is that my views have not actually changed. The entity which I have spent my life combatting remains the same, regardless of the label I might stick on it.
It is not really an “-ism”, an abstract ideological concept which mysteriously casts our societies under its motivational spell, but a real and physical system, built on capital, which is maintained by real and physical players.
It is an arrangement by which a tiny minority of extremely wealthy people possess all the power and privilege in the world at the expense of the vast majority of us, whom they regard as both dangerous and dispensible.
It is accumulation for the few, dispossession for the many.
It is a plutocracy, a dictatorship of the ultra-rich hiding behind the rhetoric of democracy while knowing that real democracy would be incompatible with its ongoing supremacy and thus doing all it can to prevent it from ever flourishing.

The Haitian government announced last week that it will be doubling the already absurdly high fuel prices in the country. The fuel prices are but one of many reasons behind their rebellion.
However, this latest offense has kicked off an accelerated round of rebel action. Youth have taken to the streets and have barricaded Port-au-Prince.
Multiple banks have been burned, while the homes of politicians and their bourgeois supporters have been attacked.
On September 15th, Haitian rebels in Port-au-Prince stormed the offices of State media and set fire to three vehicles.
They also expropriated food and other supplies from two warehouses in Les Gonaïves: one belonging to Caritas, a Catholic NGO; and the other belonging to the World Food Program.
