‘Shocked, devastated’: Israel’s Gaza City assault traumatises residents

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have fled Gaza City since Israel launched its major assault but many remain trapped, too exhausted or too poor to leave.

“Death is more merciful,” said Mohammed Nassar, 38, of the Tal al-Hawa area, watching a steady stream of neighbours leave.

Families could be seen leaving with their belongings piled on trucks, cars, donkey carts, and their own shoulders.

Nassar, caring for three daughters, said he lacked both the strength and money to move, leaving him trapped in Gaza City. “As for me, my wife and my three daughters, we will wait until the last moment,” he said.

“The occupation wants to forcibly displace everyone so it can destroy Gaza City and turn it into another Beit Hanoon or Rafah – unlivable for the next 100 years,” Nassar said.

How and when did the Magdalena Anarchist Local come about? Tell us why Magdalena and how you are connected to the Lavapiés neighborhood where the Local is located.

The origin of the Local stems from a need to bring together various projects. It was born in a CNT space on Magdalena Street, a space that the union had been using since the 1970s.

In the 1990s and 2000s, they shared it with other groups that met there. There came a time when the union no longer participated in the local, and these other groups continued to use it.

To give you an idea, it was a large apartment with several rooms, so each room was used by different projects. From the Anarchist Youth of many years ago to the Anarchopunk Federation, etc., very different collectives without a common project passed through there..

Then, there came a time when the Klinamen publishing house and the Mundo Muerto distribution company also got involved, and projects began to emerge that gave rise to the library as we understand it today.

In 2003, the library was born under the name Biblioteca Social Enoch, then the bookstore, and later the video library and archive. At some point, all these projects were understood as a common project, which is Local Anarquista Magdalena.

We have never been a project directly linked to the neighborhood, although there have been many stages in which we have been.

Ultimately, we are a libertarian space whose strength is that we are in the center of Madrid and it is a meeting place, whether you have come for a book, an assembly, or an activity. We have projected ourselves more as an infrastructure for the city’s collectives than for the neighborhood.

But for several years, we have participated in assemblies against the gentrification of Lavapiés, such as STOP HOTEL (to stop the construction of the IBIS Hotel in Plaza de Lavapiés) and Paremos Hotel Cabestreros (with the intention of stopping the construction of a hotel in Plaza de Cabestreros).

We have also tried to bring the libertarian and anti-prison discourse to the streets by redefining a crossroads between two streets (Calvario and Ministriles), renaming it Plaza de Xosé Tarrio, where we have hosted screenings, talks, and workshops.

It has also been influential that the Magdalena assembly has never included anyone who lives in the neighborhood; instead, we have been people who have spent many hours in Lavapiés and have felt it is our neighborhood. Since none of us live in Lavapiés, at specific times, such as the COVID lockdown and the day of the blackout, we were unable to offer or use the space as a neighborhood infrastructure.

Also, due to the gentrification of the neighborhood and the expulsion of neighbors, fewer and fewer of our neighbors are using the space.

Despite these difficulties, we want to be a tool and an infrastructure for the Lavapiés neighborhood, something that can be complicated when we’re not there ourselves in their daily lives. But both the library and the space are available and open to the neighborhood.

In fact, we recently established a very nice collaboration with the “Lavapié Dragons,” where kids come every Tuesday to play chess.

Running Down the Walls (RDTW) is an annual 5Km run/jog/walk in Nth America organized by the Anarchist Black Cross Federation (ABCF). This powerful community-driven event promotes awareness about political prisoners and prisoners of war in the United States, and fundraises for their essential needs.

In 2025, RDTW is scheduled for September 21st. Confirmed participating cities include Eugene, Portland (OR), Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, and Miami.

RDTW is deeply rooted in solidarity: while community members take part outside, prisoners participate from within correctional facilities. Onlookers gather to cheer-on the self-described “non-competitive 5K run/jog/walk/roll.”

A Pushing Down the Walls event (burpee contest) will also be taking place on November 8th in Southern California.

Since 1999, prisoners and supporters throughout North America have participated in the annual event known as Running Down the Walls (RDTW) often running or walking simultaneously in many cities and prisons at once. Many places will be hosting the 26th annual RDTW on or around Sunday, September 21th, 2025 – stay tuned to our blog for more details from all of the locations participating this year!

This is a non-competitive 5K run/jog/walk/roll to raise awareness and funds for political prisoners. Over the years, we have raised thousands of dollars and lots of awareness around the struggle to free political prisoners.

By now the US police are highly militarized, linked into the arms economy and directed by a paranoic Deep State obsessed with controlling the population, as well as stealing dwindling resources and maintaining its privileges worldwide.

Antifascism for us is a moral human duty. They cannot really ban Antifa because it isnt a Party or Union. But they can jail, repress, deport or just kill us, along with trans kids, and rebellious blacks and women and…you.

They can select or invent a single crime by one of us, cover it 24/7, and watch their shares in the bought media grow.

They have cemented their grip on power by lighting up firestorms of hysterical hatred by labelling single actions by an ‘antifa’ a trans’ or any ‘woke’ as a hate crime. Even if its one in a million¡.

Despite new laws supporting Israel and a blind eye to Israeli bribery and political blackmail. Despite countless billions of public money given in gifted armaments, the resistance to the mass slaughter of innocents and children still increases.

For those that don’t know, Project Esther—named after a figure in the Hebrew bible—comes by way of the Heritage Foundation and aims to “dismantle the Hamas network” in the US by labeling anyone criticizing Israel or supporting Palestine as potential ‘terrorists’ and being tied to Hamas.

The Israeli occupation has intensified its bombardment of Gaza City, attacking the Islamic University three times in succession, with the final attack using highly explosive bombs that left dozens of martyrs buried beneath the rubble.

“Israel’s” indiscriminate strikes extended to the Mhanna and Al-Taj Towers, entire residential blocks under so-called “evacuation orders”, and even five UNRWA schools.

In a further escalation, Israeli aircraft destroyed the historic Greek Orthodox School and its church, further highlighting the ethnic cleansing and genocidal nature of the Israeli occupation regime’s war on Gaza.
