In Hollywood the US military is usually either shown fighting Nazis in World War II or in modern times fighting fictional enemies and fantasy monsters like zombies, aliens, or Godzilla. This is because in all modern real life conflicts, the US troops are the villains.

Puesto que la violencia ha sido un componente fundamental de las guerras y las dictaduras, analizar las experiencias y vivencias de las mujeres en los conflictos bélicos tendría que estar vinculado a las de las prácticas violentas que las acompañaban. En el caso de las guerras civiles debería tenerse en cuenta tanto la violencia militar (batallas, combates y bombardeos) como la violencia civil y política que se producía en el frente, pero especialmente en la retaguardia, espacio fundamentalmente femenino.
