A drama 150 years in the making is playing out as logging companies and police clash with First Nations and protesters over one of British Columbia’s last remaining stands of unprotected old-growth forest.

One place to start is Google Earth. Type in Fairy Creek. Watch the planet swivel round to Canada’s west coast and zoom into Vancouver Island, green from a distance but gathering gray-brown splotches as the clearcuts come into range.
There’s Port Renfrew, the logging and fishing town at the south end of the West Coast Trail; beside it, tucked into the estuary where the San Juan and Gordon Rivers spill into a broad bay lined with mammoth driftwood, is the Pacheedaht First Nation’s reserve, just a few dozen bungalows and trailer homes.

The result of this significant waste of resources includes the arrest of three girls aged 16, 17 and 18.
These girls are standing up for old growth forests for the sake of those very police officers’ own children and grandchildren.Despite set-backs earlier in the week and ongoing police intimidation and arrests, WE HAVE HELD OUR GROUND! Brave forest defenders of all ages continue to delay industry by chaining themselves to the earth, to logs, to gates, to each other, and suspending themselves high above the earth at the tops of their beloved trees or up in tripods. NHS source claims new data will be “more realistic” in the future, by removing “incidental” Covid from the records. ‘The new method will NOT be backdated, as that would make the pandemic almost disappear!‘
by Kit Knightly
The UK’s National Health Service has received new instructions from the government on how it should record Covid19 “cases”, separating those who are actually sick from those who just test positive.
From the beginning of the “pandemic” last spring, the NHS (and other countries all over the world) have defined a “case” as anyone who tests positive for the Sars-Cov-2 virus, regardless of whether or not they have symptoms.

An indictment drafted by an Ankara prosecutor calls for a prison sentence of up to two years for Ezgi Mola, a popular Turkish actress, accused of insults after tweeting in August 2020 about the release of a former soldier accused of kidnapping and repeatedly raping an 18-year-old Kurdish woman, İpek Er .
Ipek was left 80% paralysed and left evidence and a letter before attempting suicide in despair, dying in hnospital 33 days later.

The similarities between the movement to abolish war and the movement to abolish police and prisons jump out at me anew when reading Mariame Kaba’s We Do This ‘Til We Free Us, which is about police and prison abolition.
The book –We Do This ‘Til We Free Us-, has a foreword by Naomi Murakawa that includes this:
“Police push millions of people into the criminal punishment system, where anti-Black death-dealing rises through each circle of hell. Black people comprise 13 percent of the U.S. population but roughly 30 percent of the arrested, 35 percent of the imprisoned, 42 percent of those on death row, and 56 percent of those serving life sentences. Inside the largest prison system on the planet, the Covid-19 death rate is five times that of the general population.
The roughly eight hundred U.S. military bases the world over — like the nation’s birth in native dispossession and slavery — reinforce the lessons that Trump’s brand of white brothers know all too well: take by force and invent the racial enemy.
We live in the age of human sacrifice, says Ruth Wilson Gilmore, and our prison and military machinery normalizes industrialized killing. We must abolish the prison-industrial complex … .”
A real shame. A major scandal. The decision of the Constitutional Council on May 21 – requested by deputies En Marche and the Minister of Education Jean Michel Blanquer – to refuse to legalize language immersion and the accents of “regional” languages as approved by a large majority of deputies
The decision above all is absurd and illegitimate. It is a real incitement to open disobedience.
The APLEC and all lovers of Catalan called to demonstrate on Saturday, May 29 at 3 am in the Plaça de Catalunya in Perpignan against an unjust, inept and undemocratic decision. It encourages us to fight even more against unfair practices, to reflect now that elections are coming on who will allow this permission to euthanize languages already in difficulty.
APLEC called for the removal of the mention of language in Article 2, manipulated by all enemies of our languages to oppose it.
A handful of Parisians incompetent in linguistics and pedagogy, living in the days of 19th century colonialism, allow themselves to reject, in the middle of the 21st century, respect for otherness and linguistic diversity, in a pathetic battle of the rear.
French Constitutional Council decides Euthanasia of Regional Languages
A large demonstration (2000 people) took to the streets of Perpignan on May 29 in defense of Catalan and against the French Constitutional Council. “Today and tomorrow, the school in Catalan!”, Was the most popular chant during the mobilization. Citizens have responded to the call of the Casal de Perpinyà, to which they joined… … read more in Catalan
APLEC REQUESTS HEARING FOR PRIME MINISTER TO AMEND CONSTITUTION
Following the absurd decision of the Constitutional Council to outlaw immersive teaching and the accents and signs of Catalan (and the languages of other regions), the APLEC has formally requested a hearing from Jean Castex, after the first minister announced that he would receive associations representing regional language teaching.
The APLEC, which has been working for 38 years on the development of the teaching of Catalan in all its forms, including immersion, wants to present the proposals that would allow us to get out of the impasse in which we have been involved. located the inconsistent interpretation of a handful of constitutional judges and glottophobic deputies.
In particular, the APLEC calls for the urgent launch of the procedure for amending the Constitution that guarantees equal rights between French and the languages of the regions…… more here in Catalan

EL CONSELL CONSTITUCIONAL DECIDEIX L’EUTANÀSIA DE LES LLENGÜES REGIONALS
L’APLEC crida a manifestar dissabte 29 a Perpinyà

Continue reading in Catalan
