In 1936 for a brief moment in Spanish history, the reactionary grip and the real and mental Inquisition of the Catholic Church was broken in large areas of the country and the mystique of religion shattered by the cathartic violence of anticlerical militants.
As one aspect of the Social Revolution hundreds of churches were destroyed and priests killed, followed by at least 100,000 arbitrary executions in revenge, often with the aid of the church, by the conquering fascist rebels, backed by Hitler and Mussolini.
The Catholic church regained power, property and riches, and the Spanish Inquisition returned, joining the Franco regime in persecuting gays, women, leftists and anyone suspected or denounced, even stealing and selling tens of thousands of ‘red’ babies and controlling every aspect of daily life.
When ”democracy” finally returned in the 70’s, 40 years later, it was only with an amnesty for all crimes and looting committed, with the church exonerated and exalted with tax free status, and the far right oligarchy retaining ultimate control.
Though the church is still in decline in Iberia today it retains huge wealth and influence in the legal, security and political institutions and a staggering and now exponentially growing portfolio of tax free property.

These data appear in the set of property records for all of Catalonia, according to inscriptions made between 1946 and 2015, much of it in Lleida (58%).
These are the so-called ”inmatriculations” of rustic properties (41%) and buildings dedicated to worship (50%), such as temples, hermitages, cemeteries, chapels, ecclesiastical groups and sanctuaries. The rest of inscriptions are from buildings (9%) such as rectories, garages or palaces.

A new law in 1998 made it simple for the Church to quietly claim the huge amount of property that was traditionally built and maintained by the public in common, with nobody listed as the owner. By 1998 the church business of selling babies had finally ended and a new way was found to update the practice of diverting vast sums of cash and power to the coffers of the dwindling institution.

Juli wurden Dutzende Frauen in Amed verhaftet, darunter Ayşe Gökkan als Sprecherin der TJA (Tevgera Jinên Azad / Bewegung Freier Frauen), die Journalistin Ayşe Güney, die siebzigjährige Friedensmutter Hayriye Demir und Elif Haran, die Ko-Vorsitzende der Gefangenenhilfsorganisation MED TUHAD-FED. Die Repression gegen die kurdische Frauenbewegung in der Türkei hat sich seit der Kriminalisierung des Frauenvereins Rosa im Mai verschärft und ist Teil des Vernichtungsfeldzugs gegen die kurdische Zivilgesellschaft.
Die feministischen Kämpfe und in diesem Fall der Kampf der kurdischen Frauen gegen die patriarchalen Herrscher macht Angst und wird mit sexistischer Repression beantwortet!!

In October, a protest against an increase in metro fares by high schoolers in Santiago, Chile, escalated into a nationwide uprising that was sustained until public health concerns due to the coronavirus pandemic hit pause on most street protests.
“Nobody in Chile, and I think its really important to say this, anticipated what happened on October 18th, nobody imagined what was coming,” said Javiera Manzi, from the 8M Feminist Coordinating Committee.
That night, the government of Sebastián Piñera had declared a state of emergency, which means the military could be used to quash demonstrations. Support for protests swelled as Chileans recalled the military dictatorship that existed until 1990, from which democratic governments had distanced themselves saying: never again (although Pinochet still headed the army until 1998, and some members of ensuing governments supported the dictatorship).
Protesters at many mass actions organized in an effort to allow those attending protests to determine their level of interaction with the police. The first line, faces covered, held shields and stave off the cops, behind them stood folks with lasers, then those ready to help with teargas and behind them, street medics. Large crowds, including, musicians and artists, created a combative and sometimes festive atmosphere.
In an article titled “Australian government slashes pandemic payments to workers after suspending parliament“, World Socialist Web Site reports:
Despite a worsening COVID-19 surge in Australia’s two most populous states, the Liberal-National government yesterday announced the slashing of its pandemic wage subsidies and welfare benefits, as part of its drive to “reopen the economy.”
Under conditions of mass unemployment, this will impoverish more than five million unemployed or under-employed workers and welfare recipients. The blatant purpose is to give workers no choice but to go back into unsafe workplaces regardless of the danger of infection.
“JobSeeker and JobKeeper are not do—nothing payments,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison declared, saying they were not designed to prevent people “from going out and seeking work.” Treasury had reported that the payments to workers “potentially blunted their incentives to work, or to take on additional hours of work.”
Got that? It’s too dangerous for our own MPs to go back to work, but everyone else needs to or face economic hardship. These cuts come at a time when 13 out of work Australians can be competing for a single job.

Mexico, Jul 23 (Prensa Latina) The Chinese vaccine against Covid-19 will be a public good with universal access, Foreign Minister Wang Yi told her colleagues in Latin America, according to a statement from the Mexican Foreign Ministry.
Last night, Mexico and China co-chaired a virtual meeting of foreign ministers from Latin America and the Caribbean, which aimed to consolidate international cooperation against Covid-19 and jointly face the challenges derived from the pandemic.
The meeting was chaired by Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard, and by Minister Wang.

My social media notifications have been lighting up the last few days with virulent Chinagaters sharing a video which purports to show Uighur Muslims being loaded onto a train to be taken to concentration camps.
It’s actually an old video that had already surfaced last year, but it is magically making the rounds again as a new and shocking revelation in 2020 now that western China hysteria has been officially kicked into high gear, at exactly the same time the US enacts one of the most dangerous and incendiary escalations of recent years in the South China Sea.
Everyone tagging me in this video presents it as a self-evident “gotcha” moment, in exactly the same way Russiagaters spent years tagging me in every HUGE BOMBSHELL WALLS ARE CLOSING IN item of thinly sourced narrative fluff in their debunked conspiracy theory that the Kremlin had infiltrated the highest levels of the US government.
They are one hundred percent certain that the video shows Uighurs being loaded onto a train to go to a concentration camp, solely because that is what the bit of text over the video tells them they are seeing.
They aren’t looking at the actual data and thinking critically about it, they’re looking at the narrative and believing it on blind faith.
Which, in a post-Iraq invasion world, is an absolutely insane thing to do when presented with information about a nation that is targeted by the US-centralized empire.
In reality there’s nothing in the video which tells us that these are Uighur people being sent to a “re-education camp” and not merely a conventional prison transfer of convicted criminals, the likes of which take place in the far more populous US prison system all the time.
It’s an unknown. We are told by the BBC’s Andrew Marr (the same Andrew Marr whose phony journalism Noam Chomsky derided years ago) that it has been “authenticated by western intelligence agencies and by Australian experts”, which in practice are the same thing, and that’s really the extent of the evidence.
