6,000 euros Fine each for Blocking Torture of Bulls

30The Prefectures of Castellon has imposed a fine of 6,000 euros on each of the 35 activists who prevented a bull  from being set on fire for ”sport” in the town of Olocau del Rey. This is the highest penalty imposed on Spain for such a crime and has been possible thanks to the new so-called ‘gag law’.(see related posts below) We publish the testimony of one of those people, unsigned for fear of further reprisals.

Bullfights used to impose Patriarchy and Nationalism

Don’t expect to see a bullfight when you trip to Barcelona, the last stadium is closed and the ”sport” banned. In fact for years it was mainly kept going by the tourist industry.

The popular bumper sticker in Madrid is the bull, representing, for the Catalans,  cruel bullying disguised as ‘heroic’ sexist posturing.

Barcelona  cars on the other hand feature the Catalan donkey, symbolizing just a nice but stubborn animal, and maybe the ability to laugh at themselves.

In San Sebastian of the Kings, (real name Donostia in Basque) the battle against bullfighting is in full swing.  Last week there was a new demo against, which was attacked by pro-bullfight thugs, sending one girl to hospital. Parlament aprova la mort de 60.000 ocells

catalan politicians vote death of 60,000 singbirdsEl Parlament de Catalunya ratifica un Decret Llei per a la captura d’ocells fringíl·lids encara que va ser informat en repetides ocasions de la il·legalitat de la norma aprovada.

SEO/BirdLife va enviar a tots els membres de la cambra un contundent informe en què es demostra que el DECRET LLEI 2/2011 aprovat, contravé la Directiva d’Aus (92/43/CEE) i la Llei 42/2007 de Patrimoni Natural i Biodiversitat.

Tots els parlamentaris estaven informats de la il·legalitat de la pràctica que autoritza aquest Decret Llei, fins i tot alguns d’ells van presentar els informes enviats per SEO/BirdLife posant de manifest les sentències del Tribunal de Justícia de les Comunitats
Europees contra aquesta pràctica i els informes dels propis tècnics de caça de la Generalitat i de la Secretaria General Tècnica del Ministeri de Medi Ambient i Medi Rural i Marí (MARM), però el Parlament de Catalunya ha ratificat, amb els vots a favor de CiU, PP i el PSC, aquest Decret i s’autoritzarà la captura de 60.000 ocells al territori autonòmic.

Actualment, SEO/BirdLife realitza una campanya contra la caça il·legal d’ocells a Espanya, que intenta acabar amb aquest tipus de pràctiques mitjançant la sensibilització dels ciutadans i el compliment de la legislació vigent.
