Why Are Anarchists Suddenly Showing up in so many Korean Films?
From CrimethInc….This year, several major films from South Korea depict rebels or outright anarchists. Okja portrays the Animal Liberation Front; Anarchist from Colony tells the story of Park Yeol and Fumiko Kaneko, two anarchist nihilists who have become national heroes in Korea; A Taxi Driver dramatizes the Gwanju uprising of 1980. Why are anarchists suddenly appearing in Korean cinema? What’s the context behind these films? And how can they inform how we frame our own narratives in a time of resurgent nationalism and unrest
South Korea, 2017. The new year arrived with a surge of demonstrations expressing disgust at the state of the nation. “Is this a/our country?” went a popular slogan. The state apparatus played for time by starting the impeachment process.

Spain annuls Catalan self-government, prepares military rule from Madrid
By Alex Lantier: Three weeks after the savage police crackdown on the October 1 Catalan independence referendum, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced the invocation of Article 155 to strip Catalonia’s regional government of its powers. In its place, Madrid is to install an unelected government in Barcelona backed by the Spanish army, Guardia Civil paramilitary police and other police units.
The implementation of Article 155 will inevitably involve the Spanish regime in a violent confrontation with broad masses of the Catalan population, where there is deep opposition to Madrid’s turn to dictatorship. As Rajoy’s Council of Ministers formulated the measures on Saturday, a half million people marched in Barcelona against Madrid’s arbitrary arrest of two Catalan nationalist politicians, Jordi Sànchez of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Jordi Cuixart of Omnium Cultural.
Catalan separatists are mobilizing a human shield and a Civil Disobedience Campaign to block efforts by the Spanish authorities to take control . Tens of thousands plan to concentrate around the regional government’s headquarters in Barcelona’s Gothic quarter and the nearby parliament building. They expect Spanish police to use force to try to shut down the administration and will put their bodies on the line, said one person. UK Activists Block Runway, close Stanstead Airport and Stop Mass Deportation
United Kingdom: Activists Blockade Mass Deportation Flight.. 17 arrests
Police have arrested 17 anti-deportation protesters who locked themselves to an aircraft at Stansted airport, preventing a charter flight due to remove asylum seekers and other migrants from the UK from taking off.
The protesters locked themselves to the wing of a Titan Airways flight and refused to move. All 17 protesters involved with the action have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass and are now in police custody.
Essex police said they had received reports that a group of protesters gained access to Stansted airport’s airside at about 9.30pm on Tuesday night. A spokesman said: “We were contacted by Stansted airport after protesters entered and locked themselves on to an aircraft destined for Nigeria. Officers remain at the scene to carry out further investigations. Inquiries are ongoing.”
Campaigners said the protest was to stop a Home Office “mass deportation charter flight” from the Essex airport to Nigeria and Ghana. They said that deportees on the flight included people who feared for their lives and had claimed asylum…… Continue reading “UK Activists Block Runway, close Stanstead Airport and Stop Mass Deportation”

Bullfights used to impose Patriarchy and Nationalism
Don’t expect to see a bullfight when you trip to Barcelona, the last stadium is closed and the ”sport” banned. In fact for years it was mainly kept going by the tourist industry.
The popular bumper sticker in Madrid is the bull, representing, for the Catalans, cruel bullying disguised as ‘heroic’ sexist posturing.
Barcelona cars on the other hand feature the Catalan donkey, symbolizing just a nice but stubborn animal, and maybe the ability to laugh at themselves.
In San Sebastian of the Kings, (real name Donostia in Basque) the battle against bullfighting is in full swing. Last week there was a new demo against, which was attacked by pro-bullfight thugs, sending one girl to hospital. (see report below) Continue reading “Bullfights used to impose Patriarchy and Nationalism”
