A CONTROVERSIAL new law which could lead to fines of a minimum of 60,000 euros for demonstrators has fallen foul of practically every member of the opposition this week – eight parties proposed amendments to it, but these were all rejected.Known as ‘the Gagging Law’, the forthcoming legislation on public order is viewed as effectively making public demonstrations illegal on pain of fines which would wipe out a person’s entire assets.The dissenting parties – which included the PSOE, UPyD and United Left, or IU – objected to fines ranging from 30,000 to 600,000 euros for organisers of demonstrations where these got out of hand, or did not have a council permit.
