The problem of hunger is not due to the low yields of family farming . The world has 7 billion people and produces enough food for 9 billion . However currently there in the world more than a billion hungry ( over 50 million in the U.S. alone ) . At the same time , there are over one billion overweight people, many of whom are obese and suffer from diseases related to the industrialized food diet which can be as deadly as hunger.
Hunger and obesity are not the result of low agricultural yields but are due to: excessive production of toxic foods , the huge waste of food in commercialization and industrialization, shortage of healthy organic food in countries dominated by agro – industry , the injustice that governs the ownership of agricultural land and inequality in how food is distributed in capitalism.
The false policy of ” food security” has completed the global strategy of the Obama administration . This agricultural policy is complementary to the “war on terror ” that U.S. military intervention extended overtly and covertly to nearly a hundred countries , the “war on drugs” that provided the DEA the domain of international trafficking and substance abuse management of the economy by men of Wall Street that sparked a global socio- economic crisis , which began in 2007-2008 and still in force , with which subordinated the global economy international financial capital . The “war on terrorism ” and the “war on drugs” added ” chemical warfare against nature ” .

In addition, females in GM diet developed mammary tumors and males severe damage livers and kidneys. The study, published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology ‘ , had to be done in absolute secrecy, since multinationals who own the genetically altered seeds dominate a lobby that has its tentacles both in universities and research centers , as in the agricultural ministries and governmental institutions state – release authorizations and continental in the case of the European Union for ” damaging developments ” of biotechnology. The main European journal of finance capital , the Financial Times , editorialized on July 21 , that Europe is right to be careful with regard to transgenic crops . In the text entitled “Seeds of doubt ” the medium in its electronic version remember that , though rare in Europe , GM crops account for about 90 % of all corn , cotton and soybeans planted in the U.S. , which showed that the productivity advantages technologies are transient. And add ” Insects are achieving new ways of overcoming the artificial defenses transgenic plantations . Transgenic plants are similarly expanded and herbicides which were programmed to tolerate them , which led to the emergence of resistant invasive plants . That has forced many farmers to resume the ancient methods of weed control that they believed to be avoiding with the very expensive GM seeds. ”
The Financial Times also questioned Monsanto ‘s promises to control the resistance of new invasive plants with new GM seeds. ” Monsanto used to argue that it was unlikely that their original transgenic seeds brought to his development of herbicide- resistant plants , until the new ” invaders ” proved otherwise . Scientists are running the risk of getting into an arms race against nature , for which farmers will be forced to pay without receiving any benefit in the long term. ” That is what is already happening in Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, for example.

Undoubtedly statements by Monsanto executives and the Financial Times editorial are a direct consequence of the intense environmental campaign and , especially , of the World March of May 25, 2013 against Monsanto in 41 countries worldwide. This type of response is an effective method against the multinational biotech and agro- toxics , because it stirs the public and press about the political class and elites of the countries.

And illustrates that in 1999 Monsanto made a public offer to the company of Mississippi , Delta & Pine Land to acquire its patent on a new technique of genetically modified organisms (GMOs ) radical , officially known as GURTS Technology ( Genetic Use Restriction ) popularly known as the Terminator . With this maneuver of temporary postponement Monsanto managed to clear the environmental struggle against Terminator / 6.
The same can happen now after the retirement of Monsanto permit applications for their GMOs in Europe. Apparently , the multinational from now will enroll its GM offensive in the ongoing negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement between the USA and the EU (7) . That is why President Barack Obama appointed Islam Siddiqui as chief agricultural negotiations of the treaty in progress. When Obama appointed him in his agricultural ministry staff in 2010 , 98 U.S. organizations representing family farmers , farmworkers , fishers and sustainable agriculture , the environment , consumers , the fight against hunger and other groups, expressed their opposition by sending a letter to the senators of Congress not to approve the appointment of the “man of Monsanto ” because ” he systematically favors agro- industrial interests ” … ” over the interests of consumers, the environment and the public health. ” Siddiqui ‘s nomination severely weakens the Obama administration’s credibility in promoting healthier and more sustainable local food systems and also the nomination sends the terrible signal to the world that the United States plans to continue down failed path of high input and high energy consumption in the agro – industry by promoting toxic pesticides , seed biotechnology and infamous and unfair trade agreements with nations that oppose this strategy . Siddiqui, between 2001 and 2008 was represented in Europe as a registered lobbyist for CropLife America , whose members include Monsanto , Syngenta , DuPont and Dow , an industry association of producers of pesticides and transgenic (8) .
Scandalous Legal Immunity granted to Monsanto
Monsanto is so aware that their products affect the environmental balance and biodiversity as well as causing cancer and many other diseases , that they used the head of his party in Congress , Sen. Roy Blunt , from Missouri state where it is based and which is the largest recipient of campaign financing from the multinational company to file the USA Appropriations Act that exempts Monsanto from being sued for damages caused by its crops or chemicals .
The Monsanto Protection Act , was passed by Congress and then signed into law by President Obama , despite hundreds of thousands of petitions of protest against doing so . Monsanto and other GMO suppliers now have legal immunity against the harm caused to the U.S. population. The federal courts have no power to stop GMO spread , use or sale . The only other U.S. corporation that enjoys legal immunity that are outrageous pharmaceutical vaccine manufacturers .
The warmongering Nobel Peace Prize winner Obama, associated with Monsanto and other transnational sectors , grants legal immunity to chemical warfare against nature in his own country while leading an attack against Syria for allegedly using chemical weapons.

Con la falsa política de “seguridad alimentaria” se completaba el panorama de la estrategia global estadounidense del gobierno Obama. Esta política agrícola es complementaria de la “guerra al terrorismo” que extendió la intervención militar estadounidense abierta o encubierta a casi un centenar de países, la “guerra contra las drogas” que proporcionó a la DEA el dominio del tráfico internacional de sustancias adictivas y la conducción de la economía por hombres de Wall Street que desataron una gran crisis económica-social mundial -iniciada en 2007-2008 y aún vigente- con la que subordinaron la economía planetaria la capital financiero internacional. A la “guerra al terrorismo” y la “guerra contra las drogas” se sumó “la guerra química contra la naturaleza”.Fracaso transitorio de la ofensiva transgénica en EuropaLa falsa “seguridad alimentaria” de los transgénicos y agro-tóxicos pasa desde hace meses en Europa por serias dificultades. En junio de este año Monsanto había anunciado en Alemania que ya no estaban haciendo trabajo de promoción de cultivos en el continente y que no buscaban nuevas aprobaciones para plantas modificadas genéticamente. Esto es debido a que la oposición a sus semillas biotecnológicas en muchos países sigue siendo alta. “Hemos llegado a la conclusión de que esto no tiene una amplia aceptación por el momento”, declaró a la prensa la portavoz de Monsanto en Alemania, Ursula Lüttmer-Ouazane /3.El anuncio de junio fue preparatorio de una decisión trascendente para la salud europea. La transnacional de “biotecnologías” -y otros agro-tóxicos- anunció, el 17 de julio pasado, que retira todas las solicitudes de permiso depositadas en la Comisión Europea para cultivar maíz, soja y remolacha azucarera genéticamente modificados. Sólo pretende renovar la autorización para el cultivo de maíz tipo MON810, aunque varios estados miembros como Francia, Alemania e Italia, lo han prohibido en el ámbito nacional, tras las iniciativas ciudadanas en su contra. Monsanto advirtió que no pretende abandonar la comercialización en la UE de las semillas tradicionales. Esto último con Ucrania como principal objetivo.
En 2012, el grupo químico alemán BASF desistió de sus intentos transgénicos en el continente, desplazando su central de biotecnología vegetal a Estados Unidos, aceptando que la ingeniería genética está fuertemente contestada en Europa.
Es que, en setiembre de 2012, al hacerse por primera vez un estudio no controlado por la industria de semillas transgénicas, el científico Gilles-Eric Seralini de la Universidad de Caen y su equipo, publicaron una investigación que demostraba que las ratas alimentadas con una dieta que contenía NK603 (una variedad de semillas de maíz modificadas genéticamente para tolerar las dosis del herbicida Roundup) o a las que se dio agua que contenía niveles de este producto químico permitido en USA, murieron precozmente antes que las que siguieron una dieta sin estos elementos. Además, las hembras bajo dieta genéticamente modificada desarrollaron tumores mamarios y los machos daños severos en hígados y riñones. El estudio, publicado en la revista ‘Food and Chemical Toxicology’, debió hacerse en absoluta clandestinidad, ya que las multinacionales propietarias de las semillas alteradas genéticamente dominan un lobby que tiene sus tentáculos tanto en las Universidades, y centros de investigación, como en los ministerios de agricultura y las instituciones gubernamentales que liberan las autorizaciones estatales -y continentales en el caso de la Unión Europea- para las “dañinas novedades” de la biotecnología. Las comprobaciones de Seralini provocaron una conmoción en la opinión pública europea. A pesar de la inmediata ofensiva dispendiosa de “publicidad” en los medios, del lobby de Monsanto, BASF, Du Pont, Syngenta, Bayer, etc. para tratar de desacreditar la investigación, la reprobación de los transgénicos caló hondo.
El portavoz corporativo de Monsanto, Thomas Helscher, afirmó que la compañía quiere dejar claro que sólo buscará una penetración de mercado de sus cultivos biotecnológicos en áreas que entreguen un amplio apoyo. “Vamos a vender las semillas modificadas genéticamente sólo donde gocen de un amplio respaldo por parte de los agricultores, de un amplio apoyo político y de un sistema regulatorio en funcionamiento”, comentó Helscher a Reuters /4. “Hasta donde estamos convencidos, esto sólo se aplica a unos pocos países en Europa hoy, principalmente España y Portugal”, agregó. El 30 de julio pasado Greenpeace informaba que la superficie actual cultivada en España con transgénicos es de alrededor de 140 mil hectáreas -según el Ministerio de Agricultura Alimentación y Medio Ambiente-, lo que supone un aumento del 20% respecto a la superficie destinada en 2012. Tanto el gobierno socialdemócrata anterior como el actual de Rajoy, están a contramano de las decisiones europeas. No es difícil deducir que el lobby transgénico ha “lubricado” los engranajes de aprobación de sus productos, en un gobierno probadamente corrupto del Partido Popular.
¿Financial Times ecologista?
El principal periódico europeo del capital financiero, el británico Financial Times, editorializó el 21 de julio, que Europa tiene razón en ser cuidadosa con relación a las plantaciones transgénicas. En el texto titulado “Semillas de la duda” el medio en su versión electrónica recuerda que, aunque raros en Europa, los cultivos transgénicos representan cerca del 90% de todo el maíz, algodón y soja plantado en USA, donde mostraron que las ventajas productivas de las tecnologías son transitorias. Y agregan “Insectos están desenvolviendo nuevas formas de vencer las defensas artificiales de las plantaciones transgénicas. Las plantas transgénicas se expandieron y de igual forma los herbicidas a los cuales ellas fueron programadas para tolerar, lo que condujo al surgimiento de plantas invasoras también resistentes. Eso ha forzado a muchos agricultores a retomar los antiguos métodos para control de hierbas que ellos creían estar evitando cuando compraron las carísimas semillas transgénicas.”
El Financial Times también cuestiona las promesas de Monsanto de controlar la resistencia de las nuevas plantas invasoras con nuevas semillas transgénicas. “Monsanto acostumbraba argumentar que era improbable que sus semillas transgénicas originales llevasen al desarrollo de plantas con resistencia al herbicida, hasta que las nuevas “invasoras” probaron lo contrario. Científicos están corriendo el riesgo de entrar en una corrida armamentista contra la naturaleza, por la cual los agricultores serán forzados a pagar sin recibir a cambio ningún beneficio a largo plazo”. Que es lo que ya está pasando en Rio Grande do Sul, por ejemplo.
FT concluye su editorial diciendo que al evitar los cultivos transgénicos Europa renuncia a ganancias que USA disfruta desde los años 90’.”Si eso impide daños ecológicos que podrían comprometer de manera permanente la productividad agrícola, será un pequeño precio a pagar.”
En verdad las afirmaciones de Financial Times no son grandes novedades para los ecologistas latinoamericanos que vienen advirtiendo con los mismos argumentos hace más de una década.

Es indudable que las declaraciones de los ejecutivos de Monsanto y el editorial de Financial Times son una consecuencia directa de la intensa actividad ambientalista y, en especial, de la Marcha Mundial del 25 de mayo 2013 contra Monsanto en 41 países del planeta. En las dos regiones donde se realizaron más manifestaciones fueron en USA y en los países europeos. En total hubo más de 400 marchas en distintas ciudades de todos los continentes. Este tipo de respuestas es lo único efectivo contra las multinacionales de los transgénicos y agro-tóxicos, porque conmueve la opinión pública y presiona sobre la clase política y las élites de los países.
Pero, como alerta el activista Gary Cameron no hay que confiar en las declaraciones de los inventores del Agente Naranja /5 y otros múltiples venenos. Y ejemplifica que en 1999 Monsanto hizo una oferta pública a la compañía de Mississippi, Delta & Pine Land para la adquisición de su patente sobre una nueva técnica de organismos genéticamente modificados (OGMs) radical, conocida oficialmente como GURTS (Tecnología de restricción de uso genético) popularmente conocida como la tecnología Terminator. Se trataba de una planta que “se suicida”, después de una sola cosecha, obligando a los agricultores a volver cada año a Monsanto para comprar nuevas semillas sin importar el precio o disponibilidad. La mala imagen de Terminator amenazó con descarrilar todo el proyecto de transgénicos aún incipiente. Gordon Conway, presidente de la Fundación Rockefeller, patrocinadora financiera de los transgénicos, convenció a la junta directiva de Monsanto de retirarse -por el momento- de las negociaciones con el fin de limitar los daños. Monsanto anunció entonces que no compraría la tecnología Terminator. Las ONG anti-OGMs lo consideraron una gran victoria y nada se supo durante siete años hasta que, sin alardes, en 2006 Monsanto anunció que estaba adquiriendo patentes Terminator. Con esta maniobra de postergación transitoria Monsanto logró desmontar la lucha ecologista contra Terminator /6.
Lo mismo puede pasar en la actualidad después de estos anuncios de Monsanto de retiro de solicitudes de permiso para sus OGMs en Europa. Al parecer de algunos investigadores, la multinacional a partir de ahora va a inscribir su ofensiva transgénica dentro de las negociaciones en curso sobre el Tratado de Libre Comercio entre USA y la UE /7. Por eso es que el presidente Barack Obama designó a Islam Siddiqui como jefe de las negociaciones agrícolas del tratado en curso. Cuando Obama lo nombró en su staff del ministerio agrícola en 2010, 98 organizaciones estadounidenses que representan a las familias de agricultores, trabajadores agrícolas, pescadores y la agricultura sostenible, el medio ambiente, los consumidores, la lucha contra el hambre y otros grupos, expresaron su oposición enviando una carta a los senadores del Congreso para que no aprobaran el nombramiento de ese “hombre de Monsanto” porque “él favorece sistemáticamente los intereses agro-industriales”…”sobre los intereses de los consumidores, el medio ambiente y la salud pública”.
Afirmaban que la nominación de Siddiqui debilita gravemente la credibilidad de la administración Obama en la promoción de los sistemas locales de alimentos más saludables y sostenibles y que su nominación también envía la pésima señal al resto del mundo que Estados Unidos planea continuar por el camino fallido de altos insumos y alto consumo energético en la agro-industria mediante la promoción de pesticidas tóxicos, la biotecnología de semillas infames y acuerdos comerciales desleales con las naciones que se oponen a esta estrategia. Es que Siddiqui, entre 2001 y 2008 representó en Europa como lobbysta registrado a CropLife America, -cuyos miembros incluyen Monsanto, Syngenta, DuPont y Dow-, una asociación industrial de productores de pesticidas y productos transgénicos /8.
Inmunidad legal para Monsanto
Monsanto es tan consciente que sus productos afectan el equilibrio ambiental y la biodiversidad así como provocan cáncer y otras múltiples enfermedades, que usó al jefe de su bancada en el Congreso, el senador Roy Blunt, republicano por el estado de Missouri -donde tiene su sede Monsanto- y principal receptor de financiamiento de campañas electorales de la multinacional, para introducir en la Ley de Gastos de USA un texto que exime a Monsanto de ser demandado por los daños que sus cultivos y productos químicos causen. Llamada por los opositores de Ley de Protección de Monsanto, fue votada por el Congreso y luego firmada como ley por el Presidente Obama, a pesar de cientos de miles de peticiones de protesta para no hacerlo. Tanto Monsanto como otros proveedores de OMGs pasaron a tener inmunidad legal frente a los perjuicios que causen a la población estadounidense. Los tribunales federales no tienen ningún poder para detener su propagación, uso o venta. La única otra corporación de los Estados Unidos que goza de esa inmunidad legal indignante son los fabricantes de vacunas farmacéuticas. El guerrerista Premio Nobel de la Paz, asociado a Monsanto y otras transnacionales del sector, otorga inmunidad legal a la guerra química contra la naturaleza en su propio país e impulsa una agresión similar contra Sudamérica.

1) Se denomina dumping cuando un industrial lanza un producto con precio por debajo del costo real de producción, para arruinar a la competencia y monopolizar el mercado. O, en el comercio exterior, un país exporta productos con precios por debajo del costo de producción para eliminar los competidores extranjeros. 5) El Agente Naranja fue uno de los desfoliantes utilizados por los militares de USA como parte de su programa de guerra química durante su ofensiva contra Vietnam (1961-1971). Las florestas fueron fumigadas para desfoliarlas y tornar al enemigo visible y los campos fueron envenenados para que el vietcong no tuviese que comer. Vietnam estima que 400 000 personas fueron asesinadas o mutiladas con las fumigaciones. En las áreas pulverizadas se multiplicó por diez el número de nacimientos de niños con anomalías físicas y genéticas. 500 000 niños fueron afectados como resultado de su uso. La Cruz Roja de Vietnam calcula que hasta 1 millón de personas son discapacitadas o tienen problemas de salud debido al Agente Naranja. Hoy el propio Departament of Veterans Affairs de Estados Unidos asume que una cierta cantidad de enfermedades que afectan a sus veteranos de la guerra de Vietnam provienen de la exposición al Agente Naranja y otros herbicidas. Lo que les da derecho a recibir compensaciones por enfermedad o prestaciones de supervivencia. Son alrededor de dos decenas de enfermedades graves: varios tipos de cánceres respiratorios, múltiples enfermedades de la piel; leucemias, mielomas, linfomas (como la enfermedad de Hodgkin) y sarcomas; parkinson y varios tipos de neuropatías. http://www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange/
