Hundreds of migrants proclaim ” Barcelona Dignity ” at Annual Mercé Festival

Immigrants evicted from the occupied warehouse in Poblenou fistrict, alomng with neighbours and supporters fromother neighborhoods have demonstratedted in Sant Jaume Square to protest the Aliens Act and demand the same rights as all other citizens of Catalonia.
A ” Barcelona Dignity demo” took place yesterday on the first day of the Fiesta Mayor de la Mercé . Hundreds of migrants from four continents were heard as one voice demanding equality from a government that denies basic rights to housing, jobs and residence papers , the three main demands yesterday afternoon in the Plaza Sant Jaume .
The rally started with the reading of the manifesto by Lea Goldsack , one of the 300 residents of the settlement of the Puigcerdà Street evicted last July , highlighting that ” the struggle of immigrants has opened a silver lining ” . Abdul Kheraba , spokesman of the group , asked for support for the creation of an ” Integral cooperative ” to continue doing activities with those already made their living on the streets, while Standard Falconi , of the Solidarity Against evictions Assembly , denounced once again the ” slowness ” of the authorities to fulfill their promises of ” roles , work and home ” for more than 300 people who were evicted.
A representative of the Pakistani community in Barcelona , Tanveer Iqbal , complained that the administration is denying citizenship to people who have more than ten years living in this country and meet all requirements . ” No nationality has no right to vote, leaving the country without citizenship can be for only short periods of time , without citizenship we can not go to work in other European countries ,” he said . Thus, joined two struggles : the people who were able to regularize their situation around the historic church sit-ins back in 2001 , are now not allowed to become full citizens , and those who still have a tough road ahead to get papers , such as the inhabitants of the squat in Poblenou . All interventions agreed on a common horizon to end the various injustices reported : the repeal of the Immigration Act and the closure of detention centers for foreigners ( CIES ) , which are symbols of racism and institutional repression .
The festivities then became lively and demanding , and the rally became an impromptu march down Ferran street crossing Plaza Catalonia and the Ramblas. The rythmn of African drummers demanding ” papers for all” contrasted with the discipline and order of the Asians behind a banner that read ” Nationality and equality .” And with them , a sea of tenderness and solidarity… neighbours from Poblenou, neighbours from the Raval and other parts of the city , showing that the solidarity struggle DOES break down boundaries and Barcelona can be only one, that of dignity .

La “Barcelona de la Dignitat” va irrompre ahir en la primera jornada de les Festes de la Mercè. Centenars de persones migrades de quatre continents es van fer sentir com una sola veu per reclamar igualtat davant d’unes administracions que els neguen els drets més bàsics d’habitatge, treball i papers, les tres principals reivindicacions de la convocatòria d’ahir per la tarda a la Plaça Sant Jaume.
La concentració va arrencar amb la lectura del manifest llegit per la Lea Goldsack, habitant de l’assentament del carrer Puigcerdà desallotjada el passat mes de juliol, on s’apuntava que “la lluita dels immigrants de les naus ha obert una escletxa d’esperança”. Abdul Kheraba, portaveu d’aquest col·lectiu, va demanar suport per a la creació d’una “cooperativa integral” per poder continuar realitzant les activitats amb les que ja es guanyaven la vida a la nau, mentre Norma Falconi, de l’Assemblea Solidària Contra els Desallotjaments, va denunciar una vegada més la “lentitud” de les administracions en fer complir les promeses de “papers, treball i habitatge” per a les més de 300 persones que van fer fora dels assentaments dels carrers Puigcerdà i Pere IV.
Un representant de la comunitat pakistanesa a Barcelona, Tanveer Iqbal, va denunciar que l’administració està denegant la nacionalitat a persones que porten més de deu anys vivint en aquest país i compleixen tots els requisits. “Sense nacionalitat no tenim dret a vot, sense nacionalitat podem sortir del país només períodes curts de temps, sense nacionalitat no podem anar a treballar a altres països d’Europa”, va assenyalar. D’aquesta manera, s’unien dues lluites: la de les persones que van aconseguir regularitzar la seva situació al voltant les històriques tancades a les esglèsies del 2001, que ara no se’ls permet convertir-se en ciutadans de ple dret, i les que encara tenen un dur camí per endavant per a l’obtenció de papers, com són els habitants de les naus del Poblenou. Totes les intervencions van plantejar un horitzó comú per acabar amb les diverses injustícies denunciades: la derogació de la Llei d’Estrangeria i el tancament dels Centres d’Internament per a Estrangers (CIEs), més que símbols del racisme i la repressió institucional.
La jornada festiva, doncs, es va tornar reivindicativa, i la concentració a Sant Jaume va acabar convertint-se en una manifestació improvisada cap a la Plaça de Catalunya tot travessant el carrer Ferran i les Rambles. El ritme dels subsaharians reivindicant “papers per tothom” a cop de timbal contrastava amb la disciplina dels asiàtics, que vitorejaven en ordre les seves proclames rere una pancarta on es podia llegir “Nacionalitat i igualtat”. I amb tots ells, un mar de tendresa i solidaritat, veïnes del Poblenou, veïns del Raval i d’altres racons de la ciutat, demostrant que la lluita trenca fronteres i que Barcelona és només una, la de la dignitat.
