Exploring the Commons, 1. Open Assemblies, now and in History.

–  “The assembly is a central part of the Spanish left tradition. Social movements have always seen themselves through the prism of assemblies.”

open assembly in Catalunya

We don’t mean controlled school assemblies, much less those of religious sects, who use the form just for a semblance of participation without the danger of maybe taking a vote.

We mean real assemblies.. to sit around in a circle with no fixed agenda and no attempt to control, talking things out until decisions can normally be reached by consensus.

The Spanish 15M movement evolved from occupying Squares to hundreds of local assemblies, which in turn set off thousands of community initiatives. The beauty of a real assembly is that no one can take power, and predatory Parties, Unions and egoistic self seeking ‘leaders’ get sidelined, allowing revolutionary energy to flow.

2015 Mayday Report

Anarchist Federation - London Group's avatarLondon Anarchist Federation

Some commented numbers were slightly down on the year previous when the RMT threw their weight behind the Mayday march after Bob Crows death. On the way to the rallying point people would have come across an SWP banner emblazoned with “Hands off Tower Hamlets”. They’re consistent, if nothing else, we should give them that.

Starting off at Clerkenwell Green, you were overwhelmed by the 57 varieties of Stalinism both overseas and domestic. When one looks overseas, you have serious militancy being shown on Mayday; there is a worry that the British equivalent is being turned into a historical re-enactment society being led by the bureaucratic trade union wing of the labour movement.

There were smatterings of union banners and housing campaigns, but alongside that you had ample banners with Stalin and even on one occasion Soviet-era style military formation marching with flags. Agh, working class regimentation, just what we…

free mumia
via Noelle Hanrahan

Mumia Abu Jamal    We won! As of yesterday, we defeated Pennsylvania’s “Gag Mumia Law”, SB 508. It’s hard to rejoice in this victory when Mumia is under medical neglect, riot police are terrorizing Baltimore, and the state violence that killed Freddie Gray and is putting Mumia’s life on the line is not unique but ingrained in the U.S.’ racist system of policing, surveillance and imprisonment.
