Helena Maleno Garzón GETS DEATH THREATS..
Just 2 weeks before breaking the news Helena received a death threat, with the words –you are upsetting the authorities (see below in Spanish)– as part of a violent campaign against her and other Human Rights defenders. After denouncing the intimidation HERE they received written support from over 500 associations HERE!
After a short time the Moroccan Navy arrived at the place where the boat was and some people decided to jump into the water and swim to the beach so as not to be returned to their origin.

According to the NGO Walking the Borders, due to the blockade of the police, the Navy tied the boat in a “precarious” way to return it to Morocco and at that moment the boat overturned and the seven women died.
The same NGO says that the delegation of the Spanish Government of Melilla has written a statement on the facts but “has concealed the death of women. It is not the first time it has happened”.
According to the Moroccan Human Rights Association, the total death toll is 14.
Four Congolese women, victims of the tragedy, lie dead in the morgue of Hospital El Hassani de Nador, and Caminando Fronteras has posted their photos.

According to the Spanish police ‘between 25 and 27’ people ‘jumped overboard’ when the Moroccan navy arrived and tried to swim to the Spanish controlled Melilla shore and they picked up 12 of them.
It’s unclear if the women and other possible victims were among the swimmers or among those thrown in the water when the boat capsized due to the attempt to tow it back to Morocco. In any case migrant supporters blame the deaths on the Spanish police blockade.
Meanwhile the police association Aprogc has denied responsibility for the deaths and the coverup, instead attacked the messenger Helena.
The notorious Military Police in the colony have released various news statements and begun to sue the activist HelenaMaleno (in photo above with glasses) of Walking Without Borders (Caminando Fronteras ), who signed the statement denouncing the deaths.
The police claim that they are not responsible since ”the sea belongs to Morocco” though they `patrol and regularly blockade the entrance of migrant boats by sea.
Human Rights activists explained that the ultra dangerous practice of blockading and turning back fragile migrant boats made a tragedy inevitable.
